Guide to Motorstorm on the PlayStation 3
The sun rises in the desert of Monument Valley on what would normally be a very peaceful day. However, the rumble of engines in the distance signal a storm brewing- a Motorstorm!
Ok, corny intro but it fits. Motorstorm is an offroad racing game from Sony developed by Evolution Studios. The setting is a fictional racing festival set in the desert of Monument Valley, Arizona- a week of racing and music which attracts hundreds of thousands of people. Through the game players will be racing a variety of vehicles through desert, mud, rocks and at times the air for the checkered flag.
A total of 8 tracks are available-this may seem limiting at first but as you go through you will be driving different vehicles, each with their own pros and cons. The tracks themselves usually have various routes, with some more advantageous than others to each vehicle. Finding these shortcuts and taking advantage of them will be key. Most of the tracks will have you race a particular ride but one track, The Grizzly, lets you choose from all 7.
Your rides vary in speed and agility. You have motorcycles, rally cars, all-terrain vehicles, racing trucks, buggys, mud pluggers and big rigs. each has certain track conditions it favors. Rally cars, for example, are the fastest of the bunch but prefers the nice flat areas and can't handle th rocks or mud very well. Mud Pluggers are at their best in the mud, howver, and can steer through that almost as smooth as being on a normal road. Big rigs like the mud too and can dish out the damage but are slower to get up to speed and aren't as tight in the steering.
Offline play is limited to single player- the developers may decide to add a patch to allow multiplayer offline if they think demand is there. races in single player are divided up into Tickets, each with up to 4 races. With 21 tickets available there are a ttal of As you win races you gain points which unlock more tickets as well as different varieties of the vehicles to choose from. The online play lets players set up races for up to 12 people with settings for track, number of laps, time of day and vehicle types.
When it comes to the graphics this game is a definite showpiece for what the PS3 can do, from the detail on the tracks to the vehicles themselves. The game also uses the Havok engine for some nice ragdoll physics when crashes occur (and crash you will). When crashes do occur the motion is slowed down to let you see every detail- the multiple-vehicle pileups can become quite spectacular.
So far I have been very impressed with the game and those that are looking for a new game to pick up would do well to check this out.

Parents Guide to Motorstorm on PlayStation 3
Absolute Playstation3 is a family friendly website.
We pride ourselves on being as practical as possible when it comes to videogames that contain adult themes. We know much pressure they can put on us to buy them the 'cool' PS3 titles that 'everyone else' seems to be playing. Motorstorm may be one of these.
While Motorstorm on PlayStation3 is rated, we know that you may have very different standards when it comes to what is acceptable for your child.
While we play-tested Motorstorm we noted the following information that parents may be interested in knowing before they decide if their children should play the Playstation3 version of Motorstorm.
Motorstorm is a game for people of all ages. Other than watching spectacular vehicle crashes and riders being thrown in the air (in a comical way) we could find nothing to report. There are no adult themes in this game and Motor Storm should be safe for children to play due to its arcade style of gameplay.
This is not intended to be a complete guide to all of the mature elements contained within the PS3 version of Motorstorm, only those that we found, however it should allow you to make a more informed choice.
