Guide to WET on the PlayStation 3
Wet is one of only few video games that showcase a fiery female lead for the PlayStation 3. Only a few developers have taken this route, given that it could either work or be disastrous – nothing much really in-between. Although Wet might not be as recognized as other video games in the industry that feature a female lead character, Artificial Mind and Movement's Wet must not be easily dismissed. With Bethesda Softworks handling the publishing on this one, you are sure to experience a fiery and femme fatale twist to your regular shooting game.
Simply put, Wet is a standard third-person shooter. Everything you need for a shooting combat has been tossed right in to help your female lead battle the baddies in this game. In Wet, you will be taking on the role of Rubi Malone. She is a gun-for-hire, so don't be deceived by that eye-candy as she is gifted with acrobatic movements, stealth capacity, and has a gift with handling pistols that enables her to handle hordes of enemies that might get in her way. Looking at her character, you will be much reminded of the feisty character and angst that is in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.
Although the story in Wet only plays second to the combat and action, it does help set the stage to her motivations for whatever is bound to take place in the game world. Her main mission is to track down a wealthy man's son after running away. During her quest in Wet, Rubi soon finds out that the tables have been turned on her. So instead of trying to save someone else's life, it is her life that is hanging on the balance. But apart from trying to stay alive, Rubi is not one to take betrayal lightly. Revenge is her main motivation in Wet for going after the same person who got her into this mess. It's a safe bet that nothing is going to stop her from doing so, not even the baddest men in town.
Since Rubi's moves can be a bit of a trick to figure out for beginners, Wet begins with a tutorial stage. As always, this will provide you with the opportunity to become familiar with the basic movements that she possesses in her arsenal. It begins with Rubi perched on a statue as two criminals come over carrying a briefcase. As two other men arrive, they run away with all the money and goods that the two earlier men brought with them. This signals Rubi hurling into action for Wet's tutorial stage and it shouldn't take long before you get a grasp of the controls and the gist of the story.
Speaking of controls, Wet features a simplified control system that does not really showcase what the main character is able to do. You can do basic movements such as jumping, sliding, or whatever action switches with a single button. This is such a nice break despite the over-the-top executions you see during gameplay for Wet. You can also use a combination of buttons to create a fluid transition of movements, which you can execute in between sword or gunplay. After all, Wet features an intuitive combo meter and a multiplier icon also shows up whenever you kill enemies. This encourages one to chain attacks before landing so you can ramp up your score, depending on how ridiculous your movements are.
It is possible do perform such magnificent combos in Wet with Rubi's plethora of moves and acrobatic abilities. She does a lot of back-flipping or running up walls, which help her during combat. Aside from that, she could also swing on poles, climb ledges, and slide under obstacles – stuffs that only a fantasy woman could do. While it might sound as though Rubi is seemingly invincible in Wet, it actually is a necessity given the sheer number of enemies she had to deal with on her own.
On top of the impressive abilities available for Rubi in Wet, she's also got a ton of weapons at her disposal. A distinctive feature with Rubi is that she always wield dual pistols with her at all times, which are her custom Colt Pythons. One of those pistols come with an auto-targeting system that is indicated by a star-shaped reticule so you can send a stream of bullets once you hold the trigger. Therefore, this gives her the opportunity to do more damage with her other free hand and pistol. Both of these pistols come with an infinite supply of ammo, which never has to be reloaded at any point during the game. Other choices of guns aside from her dual pistols include shotguns and sub-machine guns. But unlike her dual pistols, these ones come with a limited supply of ammo.
In addition to Rubi's guns in Wet, she also possesses a very sharp sword. Wouldn't be a nice change in case you got tired of firing at enemies? It is ideal for close-range combat in Wet and always give you an edge, literally and figuratively. This adds the element of gore into the combat as you can use the sharp sword to slice off limbs or penetrate through your enemies' guts, killing them in an instant. She also has access to a crossbow that activates exploding fires to send your enemies in a blazing frenzy. To make killing enemies more efficient, a slow motion animation can be activated in Wet whenever Rubi engages in a wild chain of attacks. This slow-mo runs for as long as her movements are chained together, allowing her to precisely target two enemies at once using her dual pistols.
The most distinguished mode in Wet is aptly called Rage Mode. It is when Rubi turns into a killing frenzy mode that virtually turns Rubi invincible at that point. Unlike the previous combat mechanics, style goes out of the window in this particular mode giving more weight into the volume of kills made.
The scoring points earned by Rubi through chaining attacks and kills aren't there just for style. It serves as Rubi's leveling or upgrade system in Wet. Once you have garnered enough points, Rubi can use it to upgrade her weapons, earn new acrobatic combos, or increasing her overall health.
Technically, Wet boasts of animation that helps to highlight the intensity of the action in the game, which is combined with an impressive framerate. Apart from the visual treatment that helped capture what the game is really about, it comes with 70's-inspired music to set the mood.
With such potent gameplay features and unique take on combat, Wet is promising to be the most high-flying shooter you've ever seen in the industry. Plus, it doesn't hurt that you got a female taking the lead role.
