Warhawk promised to be the most exciting multiplayer title to hit the PS3. It's a shoot-em-up very like Halo in style and substance, but without the padding... or the price.
An earlier single player version of the Warhawk was released several years ago for the original Playstation, and this updated version was also going to have a single player game. For some reason Sony decided (very late) that this was going to be multiplayer only, scrapped all of the other work and decided to use it to showcase the abilities of the PlayStation Network.
So after all of this confusion and mess, lets see what you get for the money...
The controls used in Warhawk may at first seem overwhelming; there is so much to do and so many different ways to do it. The motion-sensing in sixaxis makes for great flight control; but be prepared for some serious practice before mastering how to fly a warhawk while constantly firing at enemy aircraft feels natural.
If flight isn't your thing, don't worry, the battle can still be won on the ground, using jeeps, tanks and other vehicles.
Since conflict is encouraged and escalated among all types of air and ground units, the astonishing array of weapons at your disposal should come in handy. There is also a nice balance in the way that both types of combat work; each having their own strengths and weaknesses than can be exploited.
To make the multiplayer gaming experience even more realistic, Warhawk’s developers have included five high quality map configurations that are unique so that you can have varying game sizes each with very different strategies.
In addition you may also choose to further restrict your map into smaller areas, so that you do not end up spending most of your time looking for enemy soldiers.
Along with the diverse map configurations, there are also four different gameplay modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture-the-Flag, and the Zones, wherein your goal is to gain more points by capturing more bases, expanding your territory and then linking them together.
Bases and checkpoints are also scattered along the maps. And it is essential that you capture these bases because as long as they’re in your control, you will be able to spawn from those locations and generate weapons, turrets and vehicles for your allies.
Not only that, as it is specifically made for multiplayer gaming, it is suited for online network play as well, meaning slow-down is a rare occurrence.
In terms of graphics, the developers of this game have definitely done their homework and achieved a unique style with rich details and captivating colors, while at the same time allowing large maps.
Warhawk sounds great on a surround-sound system. Weapons are varied and realistic and each sound is crisp and distinctive, allowing you to quickly work out what your enemies are firing.
There is probably no other game available at the moment on the PS3 that can top the experience of playing Warhawk. While it doesn't have the pedigree of Halo, nor does it have a single player game, it more than achieves everything is set out to do... provide a great online mutiplayer experience at a very affordable price.
