Guide to Tony Hawk Ride on the PlayStation 3

Tony Hawk RIDE can be looked at as an experimental work for the PS3, in an effort to provide an alternative sporting game that was innovative enough without completely sacrificing the fundamentals of what a sports game should be like. The franchise has released Pro Skater and Skate from the past, but rarely have any of these games been able to fully establish the prominence that Electronic Arts was aiming for. To save the franchise and keep it from losing its grace, they have decided to put together an all-new sporting title with Tony Hawk RIDE in an effort to reboot the franchise.

This big move might cost gamers a lot – in the literal sense. At a $120 price tag, Tony Hawk RIDE is an ambitious experiment that aimed at riding the high of peripheral craze, much like the same path that Activision have taken on with the Guitar Hero franchise. However, Guitar Hero and the Tony Hawk franchise are two completely different titles belonging to different genres. So, was it a smart move? Judging by the incorporation of a new skateboard peripheral controller, Tony Hawk RIDE succeeds in producing an immersive game. But whether you're a casual or hardcore gamer, it still is an expensive outing that needs a lot of rationalization to convince one to go out and buy.

A lot of attention is fixed on the new custom controller when reviewing Tony Hawk RIDE for the PS3. For most people, just being able to balance on the skateboard for at least 5 seconds or more can already be quite a daunting task in itself. How much more when you use it for navigating and performing tricks? Not unless of course if you're a professional skateboarder, but those looking for casual fun might have to overcome a steep learning curve just trying to pull off basic moves and tricks with this new controller. Tony Hawk RIDE therefore requires a high level of precision to enjoy a seamless play, but that is something that is honed over years of constant practice and lots of failure along the way. Unfortunately in the game setting, that is not a luxury that most gamers can afford. The idea of being able to access a new peripheral for Tony Hawk RIDE delivers excitement at the outset but the reality of how difficulty this gaming experience could be eventually sinks in. If it might work, you can revert to the skateboarding equivalent of button-mashing, but even this does not often satisfy.

There are three difficulty levels to play in Tony Hawk RIDE, allowing different types of gamers to choose their own setting instead of being forced to take on frustratingly difficult challenges. Casual, aptly named so, is the lowest difficulty setting available which leaves most of the steering duties to the game. Your only decision to make in this particular difficulty setting is to determine when is the best time to jump or perform your tricks. While you shouldn't be encountering any problems performing even difficult tricks with the lowest difficulty in Tony Hawk RIDE, the higher difficulty levels have turned off all forms of assists. But the biggest trouble here is that the learning curve is way too step for casual gamers.

At another step further, this is probably where the game fails the most. Even regular moves can be difficult to pull off without punishing the gamer. If you do get slightly off balance, it can send your skateboard spinning in circles, or you can find yourself failing at one challenge after another. The developers of Tony Hawk RIDE might deem it fun, but it certainly isn't the case if you're the one constantly failing at every attempt. The physics and collision detection system employed in Tony Hawk RIDE is not up to speed though, neither does it match up to the difficulty of the control scheme. It is slight details like this that could make or break the game.

Onto the single player campaign, this is actually where the heart of the sporting action is in Tony Hawk RIDE. This is the major drawing point in the game which enables you to hop on a park and show off your moves and tricks. Engaging in a stress-free exhibition is what this sport simulation is about, allowing you to skate around to your heart's content and sharpen up your moves. All of the other game modes are pulled along to the single player campaign in Tony Hawk RIDE into one powerful package. Thus, you can choose from various environments and enter any game type available.

In addition to the main campaign, you can participate in some other sub-types of games in Tony Hawk RIDE, each one having their own unique objective. One such example is a race game wherein you need speed to be able to accomplish time bonuses. You can also enter Trick Sessions in Tony Hawk RIDE wherein you need to score as much points as you can within the specified time limit. These are exciting challenges that require you to increase your level of gameplay to be able to master or execute flawless tricks. Another game type will enable you to earn session points and when you've had enough, you can possibly open up new areas and challenges, allowing you more content to explore in the game.

One downside to the gameplay element though for Tony Hawk RIDE is the level design. It creates an impression on the gamers that the developers focused entirely on creating a custom controller and failed to work on producing levels that could compete with past Tony Hawk games.

To make up for that, the multiplayer game in Tony Hawk RIDE looks like much care and attention was dedicated to it. An offline Party Play mode offers support for a maximum of eight players wherein one skater will use the skateboard at a time in between rounds. The length of each round varies greatly, such that some could last for only a few seconds while others can take several minutes. Thankfully though, Tony Hawk RIDE offers an online play for the console versions. However, it still lacks the kind of interactivity that is often associated with the sport and little reward in tow to motivate players to even engage in online games.

For all the glory that the Tony Hawk franchise has innovated in the past, the lack of anything new to offer quickly doused that fire. With the new experiment called Tony Hawk RIDE, it inspires a lot of mystery and even doubt to gamers. If you are willing to pay US $120 for a fancy skateboard peripheral and tremendously difficult gameplay, this one is for you though.
