The Saboteur is a Sony PlayStation 3 Action Shooter game, written by Pandemic Studios.

Guide to The Saboteur on the PlayStation 3

The Saboteur is another one of many games currently tackling on the World War II theme. Some gamers might be prompted to ask, “What else is new here?” To be honest, there is really not much but the developers have managed to successfully retain key elements in the genre that has earned it a rabid following, while attaching a few spins for a fun yet mature gaming experience. Such is the case with The Saboteur and it really is a winner on paper, with its intriguing plot and a up to 13 gripping gameplay hours.

In The Saboteur, you will immerse into the persona of Sean Devlin, a hard drinking Irish race car driver, who finds himself caught in the middle of a Nazi invasion in France during the time of World War II. The occupying force tortured and killed his best friend, which leads Sean to hide out in Paris while secretly plotting his revenge against the Nazis. Thus, at this point alone, The Saboteur's plot has been able to create a distinction against other WWII games in the market as his motivation stems from a personal issue. From Paris, you will eventually find your way to Germany and some other locations to eradicate the Nazis.

Thankfully though, Sean is able to realize his plan of action as he's gifted with unique talents such as shooting, racing, fighting, demolition, climbing, and blending in with his environment. These skills will certainly serve him well as he becomes The Saboteur. During the game, you will take on several missions with various objectives that include destroying petrol depots, disrupt communications between the Nazis, steal contraband, take out key enemy personnels, derail trains, and save citizens from the Nazi forces. From the burgeoning of a resistance network, the story for The Saboteur will continue to spin around for more entertaining objectives to be unlocked along the way. Although this gameplay system might appear conventional at first, there's a lot of room for creativity. The main quest for The Saboteur along is sure to consume a huge amount of gameplay hours and this one is meaty enough to become an interesting play from start to finish.

The open world action in The Saboteur matches well with the interactive game environments there are. Even after the initial playing hours, it will start to become evident that the open-world action and feel of this game is modeled after games like Assassin's Creed and GTA. While this open world, third-person action game is highly comparable to these games, it has managed to incite gamer interests such that the gameplay nature does not feel overused. The developers faced yet more challenges in the development of this game, such as producing a balance between the open world action and still pushing the story's main objectives forward. The Saboteur has successfully managed to achieve that balance and does so in an excellent fashion, such that one does not feel constricted to make certain game decisions. You can also explore in random acts of violence, which has become somewhat of a key component in most open world action titles.

The game environments in The Saboteur is noticeably expansive, but the best feature about these environments is your ability to scale them such as virtually climbing up environmental structures. To prove that, you can try scaling up Paris' Eiffel Tower and reach the top of the structure. When navigating the environments in The Saboteur though, you can get hints as to where your next location is or which characters you need to find through the color yellow highlight. This makes progression so much easier and to avoid wandering aimlessly around.

The mission structure for The Saboteur is quite familiar but there are three varied approaches that you can take for a more unique experience. One approach is to use stealth by sneaking in the shadows or rooftops such that enemies are not even aware you are near the vicinity. Or, you can load yourself up with guns and barge your way in to assault enemies in sight. And finally, you can sneak in behind an opponent and quietly take them out so you can disguise as one of their own. Whichever approach you take during the missions, this will surely vary how you look at the gameplay overall. Your missions in The Saboteur will also involve some form of traveling, to and from, so stealing cars or spawning them is perfectly okay.

Once you penetrate into the base of the enemies, that is where the action kicks in for The Saboteur. For the most part, you will find yourself in a run-and-gun type of play but you can also plant a dynamite on a Nazi equipment to destroy it in an instant. The shooting mechanic in The Saboteur, meanwhile, is based on an arcade style shooter wherein you get a seemingly unlimited amount of ammunition. It also helps that Sean is a bit of a tough guy, which can absorb up to 50 shots before his health runs out. Thus, it encourages you to take on the offensive side and fire up the action! Aside from his high tolerance for damage, the game's regenerative health system also enables Sean to easily bring his health back. All you need to do is identify specific hiding spots in the game, get there and hide for as long as you can to boost your health back. This helps to make up for a somewhat faulty cover system employed in The Saboteur.

The stealth system in The Saboteur is one of the most interesting aspects of this game, which might include sneaking in or taking on disguises. To help you out during stealth action, there is an indicator that signals a player has been spotted by enemies or that your suspicious activities are detected by the opposing forces. This will provide you ample opportunity to re-think your strategies. There is a tendency for the stealth system in The Saboteur to become binary though, such that you are either completely hidden or you can alert the enemies and initiate guns to go blazing! To make it more challenging, there are special enemy types in the game that are able to see through your disguises and they too are responsible for setting off these alarms.

The Saboteur features quite an impressive graphic quality with a Film Noir-like filter, which indicates the occupied zones in black and white. The stylized approach makes this game quite a compelling work of art, which is thankfully matched by the impressive audio quality. There are period ballads and instruments used to reflect the era represented in the game, while the soundtrack and voice acting are notably impressive.

The WWII game genre might have gone stale in recent years, but The Saboteur aims to bring back spice to this genre with an intriguing plot and an equally curious gameplay approach. While it might not be deserving of the title as this year's best game release on the PS3, it is surely something you can't afford to pass up.
