Guide to The Darkness on the PlayStation 3
The creators of The Chronicles of Riddick have brought another dark shoot ‘em up game called The Darkness. The Darkness is a battle where we find mobsters joining forces to battle an otherworldly being that craves human hearts. The Darkness for PS3 is a first person shooter game with killer graphics and sound.
You are Jackie Estacado, a hitman working for his Uncle Paulie. This is not a relationship that is celebrated at Christmas time and you will realize that lack of love from the moment you start the game. You are not alone though, you have your girlfriend Jenny Romano who you’ve known your entire life and your Aunt Sarah who is the “head” of the family.
On your 21st birthday your life changes as you become aware of this dark force growing inside you. This force is called The Darkness and he sets himself free fairly early in the game. Your preference is to be alone and working in the dark. Be aware that at times the story is somewhat gruesome and grisly.
Jackie has powers of the underworld but at the same time he is human, even when the Darkness within him emerges. As you make your way through the levels you will have to deal with the goons of your Uncle Paulie’s while trying to come to grip with what is going on inside you.
Even with underworld powers, getting shot four to five times will be the end of you. This is good to know because it means that you will have to be more cautious then when playing a typical FPS. Taking your time to scan the area and come up with a plan of attack will be your greatest asset. The inner struggle that you have going on will become clear to you at a pretty good pace in the game. The key is to pay attention.
Releasing the Darkness will be your first line of defense due to the fact that it will eliminate your enemies with very little risk to you. You also have the snake that can be sent out, beware though that this saps your energy. It is better that you use the powers that you have and take the game slow then running in with guns blazing. That will get you killed.
The graphics are detailed and sharp. Much of the game, due to the title The Darkness is colored in shades of grays, browns, blues, and a lot of black. The most amazing of course is the character design giving you the feeling that you are really standing in the game. The graphics are authentic and very nicely presented.
The sound is even better if possible. By far the best voice acting that has ever been heard on a PS3 game so far. Top notch sound, awesome vice clarity with the character. The only downside is that there are times when the soundtrack to the game muffles the sound effects.
As stated earlier, the game play is much like that of Riddick. It is a brilliant combination of FPS, spiced with a little stealth and seasoned with some adventure action. You can terrorize your enemy with a blanket of death, or go GI Joe on them though that is not recommended.
We do want to let you know that The Darkness for PS3 is definitely for mature audiences. The f-word is used more then an umbrella in a rain storm and the gore is more often and detailed then what any child under the age of 17 needs to see or witness.
The subject matter is not child friendly either; we are talking about mobsters and powers of the underworld taken siege. The first time you have your weapon up under the chin of your victim and pull the trigger it will be very obvious that this is not for gamers under 17.
