Tekken 6 feels like a long time coming for the PS3, since it has been nearly two years since it was launched in Japanese arcades way back in November of 2007. So, you can't help when fans begin to lose enthusiasm even for a hit franchise such as this. However, as soon as you get your hands on that PS3 controller and start playing Tekken 6, it has successfully offered a welcoming fighting game that proves to be satisfying every single time.
After having five iterations in the past, Tekken 6 is definitely in for some challenge to string together all these various elements for a seamless fighting experience. Veteran gamers will rejoice in the hefty list of characters included in the game's roster, which is one of the finest the franchise's history has ever seen in a long while. This isn't just about quantity though since the characters are equipped with a new fighting mechanisms with their signature fighting style intact such that it does not exactly have to be all brand new, but that the game feels completely different. For newbies, Tekken 6 offers a comprehensive training mode and other excellent campaigns to hone your skills until you are ready to enter the bigger tournaments. For the rest of the gamers, there is a lot of outstanding qualities such as deep fighting mechanics and several extra features for you to consider this as one of the best the franchise has seen yet.
On to the gameplay proper, one of the first areas to focus on for Tekken 6 is the fighter roster. Beefy and abundant these are probably two adjectives that could best describe this massive lineup of characters. It is not only abundant in numbers though, you will get to play the old stalwarts that have come to represent what this franchise is about. Some of the returning fighters joining the list of character choices in Tekken 6 are Lei, Nina, Paul, Kazuya, Jin, among others. There are six newbies to join the team though, including characters from Dark Resurrection.
It is important to break down all six of these new characters in Tekken 6, since your choices will depend on their distinct moves and abilities to affect the gameplay experience. First off, there is the rotund American firefighter Bob who is deceivingly agile despite his massive size. The androgynous martial artist named Leo will surely show off some distinct and deadly moves during battle. Spanish brawler Miguel will use his power over speed in the hopes of crushing his opponent to the ground. A more mysterious character is Zafina, who comes with creepy and odd stances that will keep the enemy guessing. And then there's Alisa, who from first look would appear to be an innocent girl, but is actually an android wielding a chainsaw and jetpack. Capping off the list for the new characters in Tekken 6 is Lars, whose moves are somewhat similar to Kazuya and Jin as he belongs to the same Mishima bloodline.
Choosing between who to play in these new characters can prove to be a daunting task though, especially since their tiny avatars don't help much. However, two of the most notable characters from the new ones in Tekken 6 are Alisa and Zafina. First off, if you want to play a character that is uniquely equipped with potent moves, then you have to go for Zafina. Her distinct moves can be integrated with her stance-based attacks that will enable her to crawl on all fours. Truly an eerie approach to combat but it has undeniably earned her the ability to defeat opponents with relative ease. Meanwhile, playing Alisa in Tekken 6 enables you to access a bizarre list of moves such as using her own head as an explosive material or using her chainsaw appendages to launch a series of fatal attacks.
Aside from the hefty list of fighters available, you can also utilize character customization option in Tekken 6 for a more unique and personal appeal. For the serious fanatics, this is an option to tinker on. However, most gamers would head straight to checking out the abilities and moves available to these characters. In addition to the old and new attacks, the stance also get a set of modifications. One pleasant aspect about the fighting in Tekken 6 is that it creates a well-balanced approach to presenting a brawling title despite using a massive list of characters.
The choices of game modes in Tekken 6 feature a combination of some classic ones and a handful of new modes to try on. Arcade Mode kicks off the gameplay experience with a lot of punch, wherein you can gain ranks for each character you choose to play, which was the same mechanic with the previous outing. But what sets the Arcade experience in Tekken 6 from the previous releases is the persistence on emulating the experience as though you are competing against real people instead of it being controlled by the AI. Another interesting choice would be the Ghost Battle, if you wanted a break from arcade. In this mode, it pits you up against ghost data of real players that you were able to download online for some real competition.
The comprehensive Practice mode in Tekken 6 also gears you up with the opportunity to polish some of your best moves before you toss yourself into battle unprepared. But unlike the usual run at the basics, but focuses on more precise training such as timing your moves using the button presses to cause more damage. There is also a defensive element to the Practice mode in Tekken 6, such that you can learn how to read the opponent's attack and be able to counter it up.
The Scenario Campaign is a highlight for Tekken 6 since it marks the franchise's first successful attempt at a beat-'em-up. This isn't a short-lived diversion though since this particular mode is highly addictive. If you are also interested in checking out the story of Lars and Alisa, two of the game's new additions, then this mode is a must-play. It can even serve as a game of its own, which could take you about 5-6 hours to complete with high replay value. Scenario Campaign in Tekken 6 also features unique enemies and environments. Other game modes worthy of checking out in the game is Arena Mode, Survival Mode, Time Attack Mode, and for those who enjoy competitive multiplayer will spend bulk of their gaming time on VS Battle and Team Battle.
As noted above, the AI opponents for Tekken 6 is massively improved such that there are up to 5 difficulty levels for you to choose from. It can range from ridiculously easy to unforgiving difficulty, which should suit a wide range of gamers' tastes. But the RPG-like loot system featured in this game will enable you to collect items that your opponent have dropped off after you have defeated them in battle is a great way to upgrade your own skills, weapons, and appearance. There are some accessories or weapons that when worn will confer special bonuses in them, so make sure to pick up whatever you could get after defeating an opponent.
The online feature for Tekken 6 is also quite hefty, extending your list of gameplay choices for this title. Some of the bonus pieces of clothing you've collected during offline play won't be carried over to proper bouts though. You can compete in ranked matches wherein you can set up lobbies for a maximum of three people and compete to earn the most battle points. But the biggest feature during online play is the ability to download ghost data of real online players that you can use for offline play via the Ghost Battle, as noted above.
Tekken 6 is probably the most packed the franchise has ever seen and although it is not the best looking game in the market, it has the ability to compete. If you're a true blue fighting fan (or of the series), this title is going to be a definite purchase for you and you will certainly spend a great deal of playing hours since the formula is just so addictive, you can't seem to put it down.
