Guide to Street Fighter IV on the PlayStation 3

Street Fighter IV for the PS3 was ten years in the making and so fans of this long-standing series cannot hold their excitement. For a while there, people actually thought that Capcom was going to abandon the idea of creating another sequel to the series as the last game released off the franchise was way back in 1999. And yet, fans felt that no other fighting game was able to duplicate the kind of impact that the series has done to the genre and so Capcom is delivering the same formula in Street Fighter IV with a few tweaks here and there.

Capcom is going all out on establishing the extraordinary experience that fans would have expected of Street Fighter IV. Several of your all-time favorite characters and moves are back in Street Fighter IV. Since the announcement of the game, fans cannot contain their excitement about the game since the series has already proven in the past how much it is capable of doing. Get ready to be nostalgic once you grab hold of that controller and embark on your next set of fighting adventures.

Instead of being a sequel to the third installment, the events of Street Fighter IV actually took place in the time between Street Fighter II and III. After Street Fighter 2's World Warrior Championship saw a few suspicious incidents that had many believe a mystic organization was behind all these occurrences, it sets the stage for the succeeding events of this game. Gamers will be slugged in between these constant struggle against friendship and betrayal, thus setting the stage for another set of epic fights in Street Fighter IV.

If you've played games of the series before, then you will find the control method familiar using the traditional six-button controls. However, there is a bunch of new moves, attacks, and combos to learn in Street Fighter IV that are as powerful as they are fun to use against your opponents. But before proceeding into the gameplay proper, attention must be focused on the characters who are behind all these fighting action that is about to unfold in Street Fighter IV.

There are the classic characters returning from World Warriors of Street Fighter II that are returning in Street Fighter IV. The entire crew is indeed back which includes Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, E-Honda, Dhalsim, Zangief, Blanka, Vega, Sagat, M.Bison, and Barlog. Keeping things fresh and full of surprises are the new bunch of challengers lined up for Street Fighter IV. The four new characters to play include El Fuerte, Crimson Viper, Abel, and Rufus.

Incorporating these new challengers with the returning characters from previous SF games was a challenge for the developers to ensure that the action remains seamless and fluid. Other considerations that were made during the incorporation included the precise collision between the old and new characters whenever they fight each other in Street Fighter IV.

Gameplay in Street Fighter IV is still two-dimensional and Capcom hinted that the gameplay experience is quite similar to Super Street Fighter II Turbo. One of the biggest change in Street Fighter IV's gameplay was the removal of the parry system to introduce a new “Saving” system. This new system features a “revenge” gauge that fills up as you take damage and the gauge is broken down into four segments that are utilized in a variety of ways in Street Fighter IV combat.

By filling up your gauge in the 'saving' system, you can simultaneously tap the medium attack button and slightly impair your opponent in Street Fighter IV. Meanwhile, you can simultaneously hold down the buttons to charge an attack and make it impossible for your opponent to block. If you do this, you will consume ¾ of your gauge though. Lastly, you can use it to execute an EX special that requires proper timing in order to execute a move and then quickly return to execute another combo, leaving your opponent incapable of launching a return attack.

The combat in Street Fighter IV now comes with Supers and Ultras that are each represented by a meter. In Super, the meter fills up whenever you attack; meanwhile, the Ultra meter fills up whenever your character takes damage. These Ultra/Super moves and attacks are specific to each character so you can expect to have more variety in your approach to attacking and defending each challenger in Street Fighter IV. Plus, this is one part of the combat that is rendered in 3D so you can switch from the side view to zoom up close to your characters to produce a more dramatic effect when fighting.

There is also a Focus Attack in Street Fighter IV that is unleashed by pressing the buttons for the Medium Punch and Kick whenever there is an oncoming attack. Although you might incur the damage from the attack, you are able to strike back to your opponent in such a powerful fashion. One trick that you can employ is to hold down the button longer and you can produce a more powerful attack that is almost impossible to block. This is one of the most powerful tool available to gamers in Street Fighter IV.

All of the changes done to the combat mechanics for Street Fighter IV are done subtlety and yet it was able to significantly impact the level of satisfaction one can derive from gameplay. Not to mention that the new characters that you can play are equipped with their own powerful set of moves and abilities. El Fuerte's moves are characterized by its lightning-quick capability and even ultimately powered moves that have him twisting enemies around before disposing them of. Abel, meanwhile, offers a more straightforward approach to combat with his charged moves that effectively decimate opponents. Crimson Viper is one of the most interesting additions to Street Fighter IV challengers because she truly belonged to the classic SF lineup of fighters who have air attacks and execute half-circles.

For a fighting game like Street Fighter IV, visual style is an important component to rendering a satisfying and smooth gameplay experience. The game was successful in this department since all the action is realistically represented on-screen, which successfully makes up for the cartoonish graphics. Speaking of graphics, characters might seem overly done with those bulging muscles and yet their facial expressions during fighting scenes are rather appropriate.

The Street Fighter series has been around the gaming community that it has created its own legacy in the fighting game genre. It has created an impact to gamers that no other games has been able to achieve because time and again, the series has continued to re-introduce virtual martial arts experience like no other. This was a vision of the developers and creators of the franchise that was successfully depicted in Street Fighter IV, making it well worth the wait for this game.
