Sonic Unleashed is the newest PS3 game to be released from the hit franchise that fans have come to adore over the years. Sonic games have always been known for its speed, timing, and the amount of exploration involved which allowed fans to follow the main character in his adventures. In the series of games released, there were several gameplay elements added or extracted and yet the winning formula had been retained, which is what kept fans coming back each time out. With Sonic Unleashed, expect to experience an entirely new adventure that will provide longtime gamers of the series something new to look forward to.
It is safe to say that Sonic Unleashed is probably the most deviant out of the games released from the series by far. While it takes a mini detour, the game has managed to stay on track and even the most expert Sonic gamers are in for a surprise. Sonic Unleashed is a testament as to how the developers of the series have consciously made an effort to offer a unique experience for every release.
As soon as you begin playing Sonic Unleashed, players will find themselves basking in an extremely cinematic opening to the game. However, you will quickly realize the entirely new storyline that is there to greet you. Following a series of confrontation between Sonic and Dr. Eggman, the former has finally managed to corner the latter. However, this is not enough to stop Eggman and he soon blasted Sonic and the rest of the planet. As the planet breaks down, it is now Sonic's responsibility to reform things within the planet and its inhabitants.
But as you continue on with the game, you will then find out the effects of the blast done by the Eggman not only to the planet but to Sonic as well. This will then serve as the first major twist in the gameplay for Sonic Unleashed. He has now the ability to transform from one form to another. Sonic is his usual speedy hedgehog during the day (which fans are familiar with) but in the night, he turns into the werehog that has impressive stretching capacity.
But beyond the differences in their abilities and transformations according to the time of day, Sonic Unleashed also offers varying levels and distinctive gameplay depending on whether Sonic is a hedgehog or a werehog. From this point on, Sonic Unleashed becomes a breath of fresh air for fans longing to see an entirely new way to experience a familiar series.
Speaking of gameplay, Sonic Unleashed is equally divided into three parts, which are as follows: daytime, nighttime, and adventure. In each of these parts, Sonic will face various types of explorations and objectives that he has to complete.
In daytime levels for Sonic Unleashed, Sonic is his familiar speedy self that everybody loves. Therefore, it is only fitting that this level is infused with speedy actions and on-rail sections. This how Sonic should be like and is the bread and butter of the series. Although this level is not perfect in itself, it puts up the foundation for the gameplay of Sonic Unleashed and establishes the prominence of the series. Despite of the intense action and that players are often forced to do button-mashing at times, the framerate rarely drops and it still proves to be an enjoyable experience.
Most of the action in the hedgehog version level for Sonic Unleashed take place rather fast, it is quite lengthy and most of them are set on the 3D tracks. It masterfully recreates the full throttle effect of previous Sonic games. Due to the speed of the action, the challenge now lies for games to execute Sonic's moves precisely such as jumping from one end to another, and it becomes increasingly important as falling off edges could spell instant death for your character. While it is difficult, it is not an impossible task to do; thanks to a skillful combination of camera angle, cinematic, and well-timed shadow effects in Sonic Unleashed, you can manage these pretty well. In order to keep up with these intense level of action, you are supplied by a ring energy. Therefore, make sure you accumulate these rings as you race towards the finish.
In the nighttime levels for Sonic Unleashed, Sonic will transform into a werehog that has great flexibility. You must also take note that the speedy action is no longer present during this level; instead, you will be faced with various enemies as you navigate the various levels in this stage. Although the combat with enemies can tend to be repetitive after a few minutes of playing this level, it does have an upgradeable combo and experience system to keep things fresh and exciting. Due to the focus on combat for this level in Sonic Unleashed, it was only necessary that Sonic is equipped with various moves such as performing combos, the ability to grab and hurl enemies, unleash, and landing critical hits. Hence, another exciting new take on Sonic!
Lastly, the adventure section in Sonic Unleashed is not the brightest aspect of this game. For most part, you will be exploring the streets of the various continents and find yourself speaking to locals with no clear intent or idea of what is going on. And what is more frustrating is that it eats up a substantial amount of time out of your gameplay experience. However, you do have the ability to unlock hidden tokens in Sonic Unleashed's adventure section, which you can use to unlock the night and day stages.
Progression in Sonic Unleashed is another aspect that could have been much improved. After Eggman blasted the planet, it was broken into pieces that you must now explore each one as they serve host to certain areas. Talking to locals can offer little to no help, but you can always ask for professor Pickle's help if you want a more specific idea of what to do when you're stuck somewhere.
Although Sonic Unleashed is admittedly not a perfect game, it does make one of the boldest moves that no other Sonic games have done before. And yet, it was successful in evoking the classic Sonic game experience and incorporating the new generation Sonic, which holds lot of promise for fans. Plus, it opens up new opportunities to explore the character of Sonic and infuse more variety into the familiar gameplay that have endeared fans over the years. The only thing that Sega needed to tweak with Sonic Unleashed is to enhance the adventure aspect of the game and once they have done that, it should be easy to produce another successful Sonic game to add up to your collection.
