Saw is a Sony PlayStation 3 Action game, written by Zombie.

Guide to Saw on the PlayStation 3

Saw is going to turn a passive movie viewer in you into an involved player as you pick up the PS3's controller and find yourself battling Jigsaw's traps in a sick and disturbing recreation of the hit horror movie franchise into the video game console. This game almost never made it into release after Brash, its original developer, abandoned the title in the middle of development. As if things took on a more positive turn of events, Konami decided to pick up the franchise instead. And knowing Konami's reputation as a developer for survival horror franchises (think: Resident Evil and Silent Hill), the developer's confidence with Saw is a reassuring prospect for fans of both the movie and horror games. As most critics would put it, this game is going to deliver shockingly good gameplay experience that will keep your senses awake from start to finish.

As with any other movie-licensed games, you think you know enough about Saw. But it just continues to shock you every step of the way with its innovative gameplay features and a game atmosphere that never fails to inspire fear. If you've seen the early build and demo for the game, you can be confident that Konami has done its job and that Saw is going to be worth playing. For hardcore fanatics of the film franchise, you should be pleased to hear that some of the traps incorporated in the game are taken out straight from the film.

Let's start off with the visual atmosphere because it is at the forefront of any horror video game, regardless of whether it is based from a movie franchise or not. This game utilizes the Unreal Engine 3 technology, so when playing this game on a high-definition screen, you can really witness the tiniest details jolt right out of the screen. The texture of each object found in-game is what stands out the most. Even as you navigate the rooms and areas within Saw, you will experience a sense of creepiness that will keep you on edge. In addition to that, you will also get traumatic flashbacks rendered in solid visuals to make the experience as raw as it can possibly be.

Gamers will be playing the role of Detective Trapp (no pun intended), who was captured by Jigsaw into his deadly labyrinth. But in your quest for truth and answer behind Jigsaw's intention for trapping innocent individuals, Detective Trapp finds himself fighting for his own life. The story in the film is somewhat connected to the film, but is not a direct adaptation. It takes place in between the events of the first two films off the series. Saw offers you a relatively unique storyline that will keep you guessing each step of the way. The game will unveil with you (Detective Trapp) waking up to find yourself trapped in Jigsaw's classic “reverse bear trap”. You need to successfully remove this trap if you do not want your head to be decapitated and end your quest right then and there. This is the first of many puzzles you'd encounter in Saw, however. You need to be constantly on the lookout for subtle hints that will show you how you can survive this diabolical trap. Once you survived the first trap, you must go and find Amanda so you can rescue her from becoming Jigsaw's apprentice.

In addition to the classic and familiar traps, which were directly taken from the films, there are some new ones to look out for as well. So, this game isn't just all about gore and diabolical traps since it will involve a lot of puzzle solving, proper navigation and exploration, so you can successfully avoid fatal traps. One of the simplest but trickiest of them are the booby-trapped doors. This one offers the most excitement, however, since you'll never know what happens next as soon as you decide to open a particular door. At this point, the camera closes in to show what is behind the trap. On the top of the screen, you will find button combinations that you need to hit successfully so you can avoid the trap. If not, then you can watch your head fall off in the process. The game shows no mercy for your mistakes.

The puzzles do not solely make up the entirety of the gameplay experience in Saw. Combat is also important. So, when you are about to face with Jigsaw's minions, you can hit the modifier button to switch into your combat stance and prepare for attack. You can use any type of weapon available and the weapon of choice will determine whether you are performing light or heavy attack. During the earlier part, most enemies will go down easily but as you go much deeper in Saw, you can expect them to be a lot tougher as well. Still, it is a nice way to break up the pace and add more diversity into your activities.

For more diversion, Saw is heaping with choices of mini-games to play. This will be available as soon as you have reached a certain stage in the proper game. But more than just offering diversionary choices, the mini games play a more crucial role than you initially thought of. One example of the mini games are the QTEs or quick-time events that put pressure on you to perform within the allotted time. These are one of the cheapest designs available for video games but are oddly satisfying, nonetheless. As you undergo QTEs in Saw, you need to be vigilant enough to look for clues that are dressed up brilliantly in the game. The developers aren't going to make it a mere “walk in the park” by tossing the clues right into your face. It will require a bit of cerebral action to see how quickly and efficiently you react during situations that are pressure-packed.

One of the drawing aspects for Saw might also be the source of its major drawback – the difficulty level. The developers need to be commended for its clever ability to offer challenging puzzles but the game has the tendency to become punitive as well. When you commit a mistake, death is almost always inevitable to the point of frustration. Therefore, the game would have produced more satisfied gamers if it provided more forgiving checkpoints.

Saw thankfully offers precise control options though. Everything felt right where they should be, in terms of the assignment of button controls. It is intuitively designed to avoid building frustration on the part of the gamer.

Saw is bound to establish a new franchise supremacy in the survival horror genre. And with Konami overseeing things, you can have faith this will be one of the spookiest and scream-worthy additions for Sony's PS3 this year.
