Saints Row 2 is a Sony PlayStation 3 Action Shooter game, written by Volition Inc..

Guide to Saints Row 2 on the PlayStation 3

Saints Row 2 hopes to endear fans into the sandbox genre with its world full of mayhem and unlimited destruction. If you loved GTA IV, this will be a looser approach to the concept with a few enhancements from the successful original release. Saints Row 2 only saw only minimal revisions from the first game but it was enough to create an entirely new game that is equally (if not more) exciting than its predecessor.

The first step to immersing into a world filled with urban chaos with Saints Row 2 is creating your own character. Indeed, the character creation tool is an extensive customization tool available for players of Saints Row 2. Although it might not determine the outcome of the story nor make any significant gameplay impact, it is a great feature to customize your on-screen character. You can specify the weight, age, look, style, or age of the character you are creating.

The downside to this feature though is the lack of voice options to associate with your character, which creates a disadvantage considering the wide customization options available. Another essential aspect to the customization tool in Saints Row 2 is that if at some point in the game you wish to change the facial features of your character, you can simply visit a plastic surgeon and have some tweaking done.

The story of Saints Row 2 picks up from the events of the original game. You have been in coma following an explosion, which put an end to your criminal career and forced you to stay in a jail hospital. This is not going to stop you from wreaking havoc in Saints Row 2, though. Since the compound is not too tightly guarded, escaping proves to be quite easy. After finalizing your escape, you find recruits that will form your gang and take over the city of Stillwater.

While the story of Saints Row 2 has the tendency to overarch, there are a few episodes which make for an interesting play. With several missions and exciting side quests to while your time away or divert your attention for a while, you won't have a single boring moment in this alternative chaotic society. Good thing is, the story is not sacrificed to fulfill the barbaric desires of your main character. Instead, it creates a perfect fusion of both aspects.

When it comes to the actual gameplay, Saints Row 2 is teeming with highly playable content. Although it encourages outrageous behavior and killing enemies are done at will, it is not overtly violent and malicious. It fits well with the concept of the game world of Saints Row 2.

Starting off with missions in Saints Row 2 is the Brotherhood missions. This one is a dark mission, which consists of aim towards vengeance with substantial amount of combat involved. Most of the missions in Saints Row 2 come in a drive-and-shoot format, which is typical of the sandbox genre. But it will prove to be quite a challenge this time around with up to 3 various gangs to go up against. Meanwhile, there are also existing law agencies present in Saints Row 2, to maintain a certain level of order despite the amount of freedom attributed to the players. You can identify which are your rival gangs and the law enforcers through the color of their costume. Better be keen on that because you do not want to attract the police officers' attention.

Despite the great variety offered by the various mini-challenges and quests available in Saints Row 2, it can be repetitive at times. However, there are certain elements of these challenges that provide a fresh twist into the story and the game itself. Good news is you won't have to start at the very beginning whenever you commit mistake or dies, such as with other games, thanks to the midway checkpoint available in most missions for Saints Row 2.

The amount of combat present in Saints Row 2 is notably gratifying to gamers. The lack of lock-on ability offers an exciting challenge as you'd have to be accurate in your shots towards the enemies before they sneak up on your first. This requires quick fingers on your part, especially in keeping up with the frantic amount of firefights and shooting that is going on. What seems lacking in the combat aspect though is a clear cover mechanic. However, this might be intended by the developers to heighten the level of aggression already present in Saints Row 2.

The side quests in Saints Row 2 is another bright element in this sequel. There are several side quests to engage in that serve as perfect diversion from the main story. In fact, some of the side missions are exciting and more original than the main missions in this game. Trail Blazer has got to be the most chaotic side quest, which will have you ride an ATV. Whenever you light up any vehicle or people, or any form of causing havoc throughout the city, you will earn bonus points. While this does not offer much challenge, there are several ways to have fun and explore.

There is also the zombie uprising in Saints Row 2, with an abandoned hotel serving as your headquarters. You will have guns and melee attacks at your disposal but your use of these weapons are limited. Most of the time, you'd be forced to run around in an effort to frantically escape from the zombies.

Saints Row 2 also offers quite an exciting co-op mode, which you can opt to play with a friend or let the AI control the other player. The best thing about Saint Row 2's co-op is that you can hop in or out whenever you like. You can go through missions together or set out to do different things at once. While you can let the AI control the other player, its level of intelligence will prove to be a test of patience since they get stuck on doors and are incapable of opening car doors.

Finally, there is the competitive multiplayer in Saints Row 2. This is not as exciting as the cooperative option but still is a worthwhile play. The main mode in competitive multiplayer is Strong Arms. In here, you are part of team and you will be pitted in various events and challenges versus other teams. All activities are set in campaign mode and defeating the other team will allow you to progress.

Another exciting mode in competitive multiplayer is the Insurance Fraud, still a team versus team event. The last among modes available in competitive multiplayer is Deathmatch, which is probably the most chaotic among all modes available in Saint Row 2's competitive multiplayer.

Saints Row 2 is not the most technically advanced game, although it looked impressive whether offline or online play. But a relief for most gamers is the fact that you do not have to wait for the game to load when you enter a new area, so this is a rather face paced game. Saints Row 2, meanwhile, lack variety in the music and can even tend to be repetitive. But it managed to impress in terms of the dying screams of the enemies, which can even send out chills if you happen to listen to it.

While Saints Row 2 did not offer anything new to the sandbox genre, it was able to fully utilize the elements associated with the genre to create a terrific gaming experience. Still, if you are looking for a game of urban chaos, Saints Row 2 is worth grabbing!
