Guide to Resonance Of Fate on the PlayStation 3
Resonance of Fate is Tri-Ace's own take with Japanese RPG for the PS3, which unlike other known JRPGs such as Square Enix's Final Fantasy, takes on an unusual route to define itself within a whole new class. It might appear orthodox on the surface and with a quick glance, but Resonance of Fate eschews convention at every opportunity it has. The game retains the basic structure of the genre but takes into the details in order to depart from the norm and break the monotony that gamers have been treated to when it comes to JRPG offerings.
The world of Resonance of Fate is not one filled with swords and magic. Instead, what you are going to get is a powerful set of weaponry made out of semi-real-time gun and other customizable weapons so you can design your own RPG adventure. But the deviation of Resonance of Fate is not just limited to the gameplay and combat system, even the geographical design has been upturned. However, we have yet to find out whether Tri-Ace's attempt to break the norm has resulted in a frustratingly complex experiment or one that would actually rouse interest for what more this game has to offer.
With all the changes incorporated into the design of Resonance of Fate, it was understandably confusing just trying to figure out how the gameplay works initially. But the key here is to gain an understanding on what the key elements are and how they work, then you're good to go. There is also a tutorial stage that you can complete to be able to familiarize yourself with how gameplay works in Resonance of Fate. And you need to invest on that since the game is often punishing without mastery. In here, you will be controlling a party consisting of three characters as you enter in battles that utilized a turn-based system.
In Resonance of Fate, you will leading a group of three housemates consisting of Leanne, Vashyron, and Zephyr. The trio work as hunters or mercenaries who carry out jobs for the aristocrats. At the time of the game's events, Earth has become somewhat of a place that required the aid of machines in order to sustain itself. Thus, a tower called Basel that serves as the overworld in Resonance of Fate. Here is where the game initially breaks conventions since you will be spending most of your time climbing up this tower instead of exploring towns and villages. Then, you must investigate the intricate network found within the tower and it should prove to be an exciting one with the complexity of the layout structure.
The game world is also built in an intricate 3D setting, despite the fact that the characters in Resonance of Fate moves across a 2D plane. The world map is made out of hexes, although most of them are inaccessible at the start of the game. You need to rotate and produce “energy hexes” on top of each area to unlock them. You can get energy hexes by defeating enemies in Resonance of Fate, which could come in various shapes and configurations. You can also find special colored hexes, which are often rewarded after partaking in key missions or winning them from NPCs, and there are certain areas that can be unlocked only using those. It might appear confusing at the start but once you figure out the system, it should run pretty easily.
Despite the complex and exciting appeal of the world map system, Resonance of Fate features an innovative battle system that is nothing quite like seen in JRPGs before. Be warned though: the battle system in Resonance of Fate has a steep learning curve. Your task is to control all three characters using a semi real-time tussle in a sequence. Each character will then perform a turn-based attack system wherein their sequence of actions will end once they run out of action gauge. But a more interesting feature to Resonance of Fate's battle system is the two types of damage that can be inflicted into an opponent: direct damage and scratch damage.
You can produce 'direct' damage to your opponents in Resonance of Fate with the use of weapons equipped for a character. Meanwhile, machine guns and other such weaponry cause 'scratch' damage. The biggest difference between both types of damage would have to be the extent of damage to the health bar of your opponent. While 'scratch' damage might cause injury, it will still enable the opponent to recover from damage but 'direct' damage is more effective in draining all the health from your opponent.
When it comes to the attacks available to your characters in Resonance of Fate, there are actually several ways of dealing with it. The standard attack is the most basic way of contending with your enemies, which require locking into an opponent and then charge to execute a standing attack. Hero Actions are far more complex since it requires a resource known as Bezels. In Resonance of Fate, you will need one Bezel to execute each Hero Action. If you run out of it, then it could significantly scale back your attacks.
There is also a combination attack available in Resonance of Fate. This is the final tier in the complex battle system featured in Tri-Ace's title. This type of attack can be triggered in various conditions, but it mostly happens when all three characters race into their respective positions of a triangle, then blasting off towards an enemy to cause a great deal of damage. And finally, special attacks in Resonance of Fate involves as much luck as strategy. Smackdown is just one of several special attacks in the game that can cause the target to drop valuable items, then make it available for pickup. There are far more special attacks available to explore in the game, so make sure to experiment in your use of the battle system.
The weaponry in Resonance of Fate is another standout feature of the game, which is tied up with an equally interesting level up system. First off, there are lots of customization options you can do with the weapons in the game, which makes you feel rather more like playing Resident Evil 4. You therefore have the ability to piece together different mods and add-ons from various materials you obtained in your playthrough of Resonance of Fate until you can create a fancy and unique weapon of your own. Going back to the leveling system, you upgrade your character such that you can purchase or gain access to newer and better weapons in the game. As you continue to level up in your game, you can carry heavier and more powerful weapons equipped with modern features such as faster loading times and a scatter pattern. The customization menu in Resonance of Fate follows a grid wherein you can see all your weapons and as long as there is still some room left, then you can keep adding pieces and fit parts into your weapon. You can experiment with up to 10 different weapon types and you can gather up to 12 unique weapon parts.
With so many things to keep an eye on during gameplay, it is a pleasant relief that Resonance of Fate runs smoothly for nearly most of the time. In fact, battle sequences are a spectacle to watch. It also helps that you can customize your in-game characters to be able to choose various physical details such as the color of hair, facial features, and clothing, among other things. Meanwhile, two well known gaming voice actors are present to lend their voices in Resonance of Fate, namely Scott Menville and Nolan North.
To conclude, Resonance of Fate is a hugely interesting game. However, it will require a good deal of determination for PS3 owners to see the true potential of this game and appreciate how it plays. It is eccentric yet frustrating at the same time, but it nonetheless introduces a new color into a genre that is quickly spiraling into a monotonous fare.
