Guide to Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City on the PlayStation 3

In each of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City’s game modes, gamers will find themselves dealing with bands of AI-controlled enemies and squads of opposing players. You will be more concerned about leather-fetish Umbrella troops than zombies most of the time, and their Special Ops counterpart.

Resident Evil is franchise takes pride on its entrancing story mode single player campaign. Though Operation Raccoon City is more about multiplayer mode, allowing you to play with other characters of the game, this particular game also offers decent single player campaign in a third person shooter base. The game offers a mission-based structure, and campaign mode will be AI controlled. However, the common complaint about this is that, your AI companions can be at times moronic. They’ll engage into combat but will fail to fight with intellect, and they will run right in front of your firing gun in the middle of a firefight. Most often than not, they also fail to heal themselves or even you, even if there’s overabundance of first aid kits and herbs scattered throughout levels.

In a bit of a twist, you are playing as a special agent of Umbrella Corporation in an effort to clean up the mess that has started. You have a choice of several characters, each with their own abilities. Find the one that suits you best and fire yourself into the fray. During the story you’ll have the chance to play ‘what if” and take out some of the main characters from previous games such as Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong and Claire Redfield.

AI enemies are pretty easy to take out too in the single player campaign mode. All you need to do is to lots of ammunition, and you can blow them up easily. You will find the rest of your team are somewhat lacklustre in the brains department when going single player as they tend to not do what you will want them to (not run into fires, come revive you when needed, etc.).

Single-player mode may be a little drawback, but Operation Raccoon City’s multiplayer component really makes up for lacking story campaign. The team of familiar Resident Evil monsters intensifies the lethality of every match.

The agile and clawed hunters happily rip everything apart; Lickers lurk from the dark and strike their prey ferociously; strong Tyrants can come out at any time, and I highly suggest that stay away from them.

These enemies, including your priorities in the game, quite change the gameplay, presenting an experience not like most team-based competitive multiplayer game modes out there. Should you keep shooting monsters in front of you or should you focus more on the unwieldy Tyrant who just jumped into the middle the heated situation? It is the continuous quick thinking of options that led this game to many memorable moments, such as the part where you have to run while carrying a sample of the ‘G Virus’ back to Leon’s base camp to score a point in the Biohazard game mode, only to get ensnared by a Licker. There’s not much to worry about the Licker’s tongue, but a monster with a good shot plus bad luck can be pretty devastating. And most often than not, you will find the opposition carrying the virus back to score, leaving you dumbstruck.

The Biohazard mode can be the most intense and struggling game mode you can play in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Teams composed of four are dropped in a place and tasked to acquire randomly-placed vials. The whole idea of this game mode is pretty simple, but as always, it is easier said than done, as there will zombies and various types of monsters will be lurking around to kill any human they see, and higher level enemies and named monsters such as the Hunters, Lickers and Tyrants will all add up to the excitement. This tug-of-war nature of Biohazard game mode reinvents the common capture mode.

Heroes mode on the other hand is almost similar to a team deathmatch – opposes iconic series characters/heroes against each other. As soon as your specific hero is skilled, you will respawn as a different hero.

Survivor mode is another game mode that offers some new exciting thrills. Eight players are dropped in a map where they must progressively survive until the chopper from NPC arrives. The kicker here is that, the chopper can only hold four survivors. This interestingly new concept is executed nicely as players has to dash for the chopper while surviving a lot of distractions along the way.

Experience (XP) fuels all the progression in multiplayer. It’s used as a currency system to unlock both active and passive abilities, as well as weapons for individual characters. Undeniably, the amount of unlockables is quite daunting. Each ability/skill can be upgraded several times, with each upgrade causing more money than the last. And it’s quite obvious that players have to spend long hours of playing to unlock everything in the game.

Unlock systems in the game are supported with very diverse play styles. You can even play medic or the undetectable sniper if you want. Players are pretty much empowered in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, giving better hope for the game’s multiplayer mode as a sustainable experience.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City's multiplayer feels very dependable to play in a whole lot of ways. Game modes may not be quite groundbreaking, but the gameplay itself is as accessible a third-person shooter game can be.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City can’t also be regarded as the strongest installment of the franchise, but it surely delivers a different kind of excitement and action that what we usually get other games in the series. Players are pushed in the middle of chaos of war against rival forces and have to constantly deal with vicious attacks from bio-organic weapons.

The NPC certainly included a lot of unpredictable elements in this latest installment of Resident Evil. When mobs of undead army were at their most pitiless, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City was just at its best. This may not be the usual Resident Evil game, where you have to wander alone with complete your objectives, but it certainly has all the potential to deliver new things for multiplayer game experience.
