Guide to Resident Evil 5 on the PlayStation 3
Resident Evil 5 will attempt to match or even surpass the success of its predecessor as it lands on the PlayStation 3. The success garnered by Resident Evil 4 is certainly a hard act to follow, therefore Capcom has decided to pick up where the previous game has left off. In fact, the developers have decided to retain some of the preceding game's most successful gameplay elements into Resident Evil 5.
An apparent difference from the previous iteration is that in Resident Evil 5 you won't have Leon as main character, instead it will be Chris Redfield. If you compare these two protagonists, Chris is definitely slower than Leon. However, Chris makes up for it by the fact that he is bigger and equipped with more powerful skills. Plus, he constantly wears his body armor and always keep his guns strapped to his body, just in case an enemy shows up without warning.
Other skills available in Chris' arsenal include quite a vast array of melee attacks in Resident Evil 5. He is also equipped with a low kick that is capable of sending enemies sprawling from the side. In comparison to Leon, Chris has certainly a lot more tools to his advantage especially with several different punches that includes an upper cut and hook punch. His upper cut is quite deadly too, being able to take down enemies in one blow.
Aside from a new main character, Resident Evil 5 is also set in a new environment. This time out the action takes place in an African setting, wherein Redfield will try to find clues into the origin of a deadly virus. For Resident Evil 5, Chris will not embark on his journey alone. He also has his partner character, in the name of Sheva.
The greatest feature about having Sheva along with Chris in Resident Evil 5 is that she can be a fully controllable second player, reinventing the way co-op mode works for Resident Evil 5. On the other hand, you can also opt to have an AI handle Sheva's actions. Whichever you choose, she should prove to be a reliable companion. You can interact with Sheva's character by sending out orders in context with what is going on in the game. Meanwhile, Sheva also helps Chris in providing first aid healing, and the trading of ammunition and weaponry.
In terms of gameplay, Resident Evil 5 relied much on the success of the previous game's success. Hence, both Resident Evil 5 and 4's core mechanics are pretty much identical. Of course, this is not to say that Resident Evil 5 does not offer something new to the table. To begin with, the control system for Resident Evil 5 stays intact from the 4th iteration - no adjusting needed for players to get used to how the game is played out.
The menu system, however, for Resident Evil 5 is beefed up. In order to choose a weapon, a transparent pop up menu is shown on-screen. While this menu is shown, the gameplay continues to progress. Therefore, it is quite risky having to change weapons while a heated battle is in progress.
For every mission type in Resident Evil 5, it focuses on two levels. First, the need to survive a battle that is unofficially timed. Second, which is a more traditional focus, is defeating your enemy and get access to a key that will enable you to move on to the next phase.
For a horror RPG, Resident Evil 5 does not offer subtlety even during the first few minutes of the game. The opening scenes are crucial in setting the tone for the rest of the game. A clip of zombies is shown shouting and making rowdy gestures to a crowd. After that, a man with a giant axe shows up and prepares to behead what seemed to be a completely innocent man. It seems like Resident Evil 5 is filled with such raw brutality and gore, which is what makes it highly successful as a series.
Your enemies in Resident Evil 5 are definitely proving to be much of a challenge this time out. They are certainly a lot quicker on their feet, but Chris handles that through his powerful punches and highly extensive list of weapons.
However, his toughest adversary might come in the form of the famous axe man who reprises his role in Resident Evil 5. The axe man holds the key that Chris needs to get to a particular area. Beating him should prove to be a challenge and Chris is left with two options: either he runs away or shoot the axe man until he is defeated. The latter choice proves to be your solution to grab hold of the key.
If you've checked out the inventory system for the 4th version, wait till you see Resident Evil 5's inventory system. There are up to 9 slots available for each character in this game, although you can expand those slots by spending some money. Then, you can easily access any item or weapon as you would in real battle instead of pausing the game to go to the menu. While this new inventory menu setup is quite realistic, it requires a bit of mastering. The inventory menu appears right in the middle of the screen as soon as you press the button, regardless of whether you are in the middle of a heated battle.
The overall gameplay for Resident Evil 5 is certainly more cohesive with the environment. Capcom has taken the time to pay attention to details in the environment, which is essential to creating the horrific atmosphere in Resident Evil 5. While the basic camera angle remains with the over-the-shoulder third-person view, you can bring it closer this time to get up close with the action. This is most especially vital in an intense and action-filled game.
Graphically speaking, Resident Evil 5 makes good use of current technology. The saturated colors create a nice polish to the graphics and the characters, weapons, and environments are impressively detailed. Without a doubt, Resident Evil 5 is one of the best looking games to land the PlayStation 3. However, this is not to take the focus away from the intense and challenging gameplay that is set to depart Resident Evil 5 from the shadows of its highly successful predecessor.
