Every video game system or company needs a mascot – for Sega it’s Sonic, for Nintendo it’s Mario, for Microsoft and Xbox it’s Master Chief and for Sony and its Playstation there’s… well, no-one really. Sure, Crash Bandicoot could be up for it, but he’s had a few dire games along the way that’s tainted his reputation a little. But who says it has to be just one character? Nobody, which is why Sony should be doing all they can to make sure that Ratchet & Clank Future on Playstation 3 is the game to finally give them their mascot.
Approaching the 5th anniversary of the original game on PS2, Ratchet and Clank have had a pretty good history with gamers. Apart from the fourth installment in 2005, which fans disliked due to the way developer Insomniac Games tampered with the winning formula too much, the duo of Ratchet (a strange animal creature called a Lombax) and Clank (his trusty robot sidekick) has been a huge success for Sony on all the platforms it’s appeared on. Offering a more varied gameplay than Crash Bandicoot, it’s no wonder that anticipation has been building for the series’ debut on the PS3.
Moving back to the tried and trusted approach of previous versions, Ratchet & Clank Future on Sony’s new machine is everything fans have come to expect and more. The plot will be music to the ears of these fans too, as Insomniac finally reveals the origins of Ratchet, and why he’s the last known survivor of his race. Helping him achieve this will be his trusty robot companion Clank, and you can be sure that between them there’ll be one hell of an amount of crazy destruction along the way. It’s what the games are known for; it’s what the fans want, so why change?
One of the ways that Insomniac are setting about creating this new Ratchet and Clank adventure is by giving the game engine a complete overhaul. Nowhere is this more noticeable than in the way the developer is using the new Sixaxis controller. Not content to just use its touch-sensitive feature, Insomniac have really gone to town on utilizing every angle they can. A good example is when you control the Robowings that Ratchet uses when flying. Instead of controlling him with the standard analogue and button combination, you can now flip the controller to direct you. It’s a subtle feature, but a more than welcome one all the same.
There’re also a whole slew of new weapons in the game to help Ratchet achieve his mission goals. Always one of the most beloved parts of any of the Ratchet and Clank series, the guns have been upgraded and improved to perfection. From turning enemies into penguins, to having a robot first shoot and then insult your enemy, the new guns are everything you could have hoped for and more. You can also combine various weapons into a bigger super-weapon, as well as upgrade them with bonuses, so that no matter how you play you’ll find your own favorite.
Of course, with Ratchet & Clank Future appearing on PS3, there’s a lot of expectation about the graphical quality of the game, especially since it has been suggested that it’s more of an update of the PS2 games than a new one altogether. Whether this is the case or not, one thing that cannot be faulted is the sheer quality of the graphics on display. Already being touted as the closest any game has come to a Pixar movie yet (think Toy Story or Monsters Inc.), Ratchet and Clank isn’t quite up to that standard, but it’s not far off. Animation is smooth and precise, not surprising considering that Insomniac is using twice the amount of animation than their previous game on PS3, Resistance: Fall of Man.
It’s not just in the character movement, either, although this is impressive enough. There’s always something going on in the background, whether it’s vehicles zooming about, the amount of enemies that are on-screen at any given time, or just something as simple as clouds moving by. There’s no doubting that Ratchet and Clank is one of the first games on Sony’s machine to really take advantage of what the PS3 has to offer.
By going back to what the fans loved about the original games, and giving it a next-gen polish with new gameplay elements, Ratchet and Clank Future shows that you can teach an old dog new tricks, whilst still loving the old tricks that you already knew.
