Guide to Rage on the PlayStation 3

Rage is one of the biggest new mysteries to hit the PS3 this year. Much confusion is surrounding Bethesda’s new title and it is important to clear it up. Basically, Rage for the PS3 is an FPS title that incorporates some other gameplay elements including combat, driving, and a bit of RPG. The title has also earned comparison with Fallout, not only because it is also published by Bethesda, but mainly because there is a lot of freedom to your gameplay albeit the fact that it is not an open-world game. You have the option to go where you want and when you want to.

Another major comparison that Rage has been getting from critics is with Borderlands, another PS3 title. It is set in a post-apocalyptic era with lots of gameplay themes incorporated into one. However, Rage is no Borderlands and vice versa. There is a single player focus in Rage that provides great attention to detail. id Software has done a magnificent job with this title to make it fun to play, while at the same time feel like there is a purpose to this game than mere basic fun.

You will start of Rage for the PS3 with a gloomy setting. A giant asteroid is hurled onto the Earth and lots of people were expected to die with this unfortunate natural event. However, you will be playing as one of the survivors in this game. You will become part of this tiny group that is preserved inside the Ark, while also working to rebuild humanity. This story is presented at the very start of the game so you can get a background on what has happened in the game world. You will glean through all of what the game world has to offer, participate in conversations, and be as interactive as possible to gather the information you need to fill in the gaps.

It is not long enough until you are attacked by a crazed bandit. However, you were rescued by a man identified as Dan Hager and he commissions you to kill the same bandit that initially attacked you. By giving you a mission right off the bat, the game manages to creatively incorporate a tutorial. You will eventually find yourself exploring a derelict hotel wherein the bandits have set up as their new home.

There will be NPCs whom you will chat with in Rage, and they will be responsible for giving out your tasks from time to time. Some would even call out to you from afar to let you know that you have a new mission to explore. Some missions in Rage are multi-layered as opposed to being linear. Hence, there is a lot more to do aside from reaching point A to point B. You have the option to complete these missions using your own pace. When you chat up with them, a dialog will show up that gives you to option to “accept” or “deny” the mission.

Combat is another integral part of Rage for the PS3. Thankfully, it provided some of the highlights to this game. It also helps that the control system was responsive and quick. The massive experience that id Software had with the deathmatch bots was really taken full advantage of. In fact, you will encounter a number of mutants during each mission that you play through in the game. The variety is fairly sustained throughout the entire length of the game, which is a welcome relief indeed.

The crafting and inventory management system featured in Rage are two of its most notable features. You can pick up items along the way and it will automatically be categorized according to the type of item or weapon you got. This will make it easier for you to browse through the items you have for use later on. It is also a good way to sort out the items you have if they can be sold or if you have other uses for them. It is important that you know the value of each item you have as it can be used for a crafting recipe. Speaking of crafting, this system in Rage is largely straightforward. You need to learn the basic recipe that you can use first. Then, all you have to do is find the right components needed for building the item you want.

The vehicles are also going to play out a significant role in Rage. There is a bit of driving involved in the game. The good news is that driving mechanics in Rage are similarly good as the combat, polished and smooth. You can drive a vehicle to navigate key areas in the game. It will serve as your basic transport option as you pick up items or get where your missions require you to be.

Rage is certainly a masterpiece for id Software on the PS3. With its upcoming release, the PS3 gamers will have something new to look forward to. It definitely holds up a lot of promise and here’s to hoping that it lives up to that!
