Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on PS3 is the fourth installment of a successful single player MMORPG series by Bethesda.
It is designed to be played in first person view (where you only see your arms), a simple button-press is all it takes to switch to third person (where you see all of your character on screen).
Oblivion is all about choice. You choose to either follow the main quest or create your own. Choosing what you will do by the world around you is what makes this role playing virtual fantasy game so rewarding. There is also lots of choice available when deciding which character you will play – Thief, Warrior, Wizard or someone with a mixture of abilities.
As with any RPG, Oblivion consists of a mixture of exploration, meeting characters, fighting with enemies who have different abilities and unravelling a complex storyline. What makes this so much better than many role playing games is the huge size of the world you are in, the number of people to meet (all of whom have something new to tell you) and the speed of the combat – which can often make it boring for casual gamers. Speaking of combat, the enemy intelligence makes the real-time fighting a tough challenge, using your magical abilities to cast spells to become invisible, or produce fighting monsters is an important tactic.
The complete lack of experience points makes Oblivion on the PS3 different from most RPG's. Elder Scrolls 4 uses a very natural progression system that monitors how much you use weapons, or magic and gradually makes you more efficient with them. All enemies level-up in exactly the same way, making progress more difficult as time passes.
The high quality graphics will have you on the edge of your seat as you decide to use combat or magic to deal with obstacles you encounter.
One of the best things about Oblivion is you can get back to places you've been by clicking on the map of where you want to go. This saves repetitive trips which can be boring.
The sound effects within Oblivion Elder Scrolls are so real that you can close your eyes and picture where you are. PS3 Oblivion also uses sound to enhance emotions like excitement, terror, or relaxation. The Music was so impressive that its now available to buy as a soundtrack by popular demand. The Emperor’s voice is done by Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation) who does a fantastic job even though it is short-lived.
Don’t worry if you have played any of the previous versions in this series, Oblivion for PlayStation3 has many more extras that still make it worth buying.
If you own Oblivion on the 360, then this version also contains the Knights of the Nine add-on, shorter load times and better graphics. PS3 Oblivion is very user friendly and you can easily play for 100 hours and still have only touched the surface of all the options available.
If 100 hours of play isn't enough for you, Bethesda has also recently announced the release of Oblivion: Game of the Year edition. This (GotY) will include the original Oblivion game as well as the expansion The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles. The Knights of the Nine will be available for download as well. With the expansion, players will be able to continue their original quest with new added areas and quests boasting up to 30 hours of new gameplay.
“Awesome” is one word that comes to mind for the whole experience of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion on PS3, but parents of young children should be aware of its mature rating, so it is designed for an older audience.
