Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is a Sony PlayStation 3 Action game, written by Team Ninja.

Guide to Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 on the PlayStation 3

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 promises to deliver some of the greatest action game experience to the PlayStation 3 as Tecmo introduces the franchise to the console for the first time after previously being an Xbox 360-exclusive. However, Ninja Gaiden II for Microsoft's console encountered a lot of problems and issues that the developers were keen on improving as the franchise slashes its way onto Sony's next-gen console system. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is undeniably the better version of the two and the bloody action got even bloodier than ever.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 has undeniably taken full advantage of the PS3's capability and it can be easily relegated with the recognition of being one of the most brutal action games in the industry today. It has also incorporated a ton of new contents to serve up fresh action for its loyal patrons. But the most defining change for Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, apart from the technical gameplay enhancements, would have to be the new characters and some returning ones that truly define what this experience is all about.

The story for Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is typical but it offers a magnificent excuse to slice your way through legions of enemy clansmen. Soon after the peace of Hayabusa Ninja Village was disrupted by a mysterious organization in an effort to secure a precious artifact, Ryu Hayabusa is prompted to go on a quest to prevent the resurrection of a massive Arch-Fiend. The need to secure vengeance is therefore the driving motivation for Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2's story and one that will catapult a massive killing spree, especially given that Ryu is arguably one of the most powerful video game character created.

The action for Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is unparalleled and fast paced, but one that never fails to satisfy. In fact, seeing enemies being dismembered and blood splattering all over the place is awkwardly satisfying. And it also helps that the game sports a compelling visual design that makes all visual detail come to life, bursting with a life of their own. Violence aside, one cannot help but marvel at the character designs, realistic environments, and smooth animation that are all rendered in high resolution display. Hence, one could easily conclude that the visuals for Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 topples that of its predecessor in a blink of an eye.

Another element that makes Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 ultra satisfying is the combat design. It is distinctive from other action games since the latter often enable you to learn basic combos that you can use all throughout your adventure. But Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is a complex fighting game that offers a lot of depth. Simply put, don't ever rely on button-mashing as it could even endanger your own health or life. You need to execute button combinations in a precise manner, such that it might require holding a button for a few seconds first before a certain combo is launched. Needless to say, slashing wildly with no particular plan in mind is your best bet at getting killed in an instant. You must therefore dodge attacks and constantly be in motion to spot the best opportunity to strike a counterattack. The unique combination of skills and strategy is what makes Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 different from your regular action games. In fact, there are times wherein you have to combine long-range attacks with melee to eliminate enemies that slow you down during missions.

The gameplay mechanic consist of traveling from one destination to another, slaughtering enemies, and solving puzzles to get you moving. But the brightest spot in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is the ability to choose from up to 3 characters, which are more like killing machines. Aside from Ryu, Rachel is also making her return appearance into the franchise. You should be able to play her if you succeeded in the original's Holy Vigor Empire. Then, you'd get the opportunity to sample her massive warhammer against your enemies. Two newcomers are also tossed up in the mix for Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2: Momiji and Ayane. Momiji is a shrine maiden that made an appearance on a DS version of the franchise, which is equipped with an Aerial Ultimate Technique ability and a naginata as a weapon. Meanwhile, Ayane is probably the more anticipated of these two characters, which initially appeared in the Dead or Alive series.

But still, Ryu's ability is put in the spotlight since you can utilize it for majority of the combat experience in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. His immense agility enables him to run up walls with ease, while he also possesses the Ninpo ability that is an offensive magic that instantly slices up his foes using blades of air. If that's not enough, your characters will be able to access bountiful weapon arsenal in this game that range from typical swords, scythes, and flails. You need to master how you can use each of these weapons available in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 since each has their own advantages and disadvantages in the game. One of the unique weapons available is the Enma's Fang, which is a gigantic greatsword equipped with unparalleled power that could easily cut off limbs of your enemies.

It is not just the offensive end that benefited from refinements during development of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, the enemy encounters and boss enemies are notably more difficult to overcome. You will also notice that there is a drastic reduction in projectile-spamming enemies to create more balance and focus more on quality combats instead of flooding you with horde of enemies. You will be battling new bosses, such as the much talked about Statue of Liberty, which has been possessed by the Greater Fiend Alexei. She has lightning powers that you must evade if you wanted to stay alive. Given the difficulty of the boss enemies, you must therefore avoid entering into a boss fight with minimal health since you could easily die in the process. You must therefore take full advantage of the new regenerative health system in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, wherein your health bar will automatically restore itself after combat. But you need to stay away from incurring damage as much as you can so you can restore your health fully, or use a healing item to speed up this process.

The addition of a multiplayer feature in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 will also add another dimension into the series. As if fighting baddies and monster enemies alone did not prove satisfying enough, you can enter into a cooperative mission mode wherein you can tap a buddy to join you in a bloody adventure and become a veritable force of destruction. You can choose to play any of the four characters available in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and team up through various missions.

The franchise is notably infamous for its seemingly unforgiving difficult level, which surprisingly is the same aspect of the game that has endeared fans to the franchise. And with Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, the developers treat it no different. So, you have to be constantly on your toes and ready to face battle as the onslaught happens right at your PlayStation 3.
