Guide to NBA 2K10 on the PlayStation 3
NBA 2K10 is this year's installment of the hit basketball simulation franchise, which has continually delivered innovative gameplay touches and refinements in the hopes of making each installment better than the ones that came before it. And NBA 2K10 is no different as it proves to be one of the giants that will be battling it onto the game sales charts for this year. In fact, 2K Sports' sim of the most popular basketball league in the world has pummeled even its closest competitor NBA Live to the ground for several years now. And they are not ready to let down yet as they raise the level of competition even further with NBA 2K10.
Visual Concepts were given the unenviable task of developing this year's release for the PS3 and they have promised to deliver a lot of new punches. The main focus with NBA 2K10 is deliver realistic gameplay to closely resemble what the sport is about. To achieve that, some basic refinements were done on the overall formula of the game, so you cannot just expect this one to be the same old game with some new additions. NBA 2K10 is a totally whole new game with a unique experience.
The core mechanics of the gameplay for NBA 2K10 were noticeably packed with significant changes and excellent features. The most refreshing enhancement is really in delivering changes on both sides of the court; hence, both offense and defense play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the game. First off, there is NBA Today, which is one of the biggest addition into this year's installment. Despite being a small mode in NBA 2K10, its overall impact permeates all throughout the game and all activities involved. You can access NBA Today via the main menu wherein you can access a list of real NBA games that are scheduled. Aside from being closely tied with real-time NBA schedule, this feature is relevant to the franchise mode. Even the commentators provide significant analysis on what is ongoing within the league, such as your chances of making it into the playoffs, among others,
NBA 2K10 also showcases a partnership with 82games.com, which is a website dedicated to listing vital statistics within the league. But more than listing points, rebounds, and other vital numbers in the game, 2K Sports decided to utilize those information provided to impact the way an individual player approaches the game. For instance, are they more likely to shoot off the screens, slash into the basket, or use screens to get themselves into position! This feature in NBA 2K10 is so realistically detailed such that it attempts to mimic signature player positions when trying to attempt a basket.
In connection with this feature is the emphasis on Signature Play in NBA 2K10. This is one of those features that has accentuated the series; in fact, the developers have added 36 more tendencies, especially for the AI players to ensure realistic action even if they are not under direct control of a gamer. The Signature Play feature comprises the dribbling style, specific stance when jump shooting, etc.
NBA 2K10 offers a substantive single player career mode, in the form of My Player. You can use the Draft Combine feature to create your own player and import that into the full NBA 2K10 game. You can also head onto the regular game and use the player creation tool. Once you have created your customized player, you can head into the draft and enter summer leagues wherein you'd be polishing your baller moves. During this, you must complete six games and six drills to see how competent you are and there are two paths for you to take from there. First, if you performed well enough during the summer leagues, then your customized player will most likely be drafted by an NBA team. Or if not, you will go down to your respective club's D team and you'd probably spent majority of the season on the bench. Unfortunately though, the contract negotiation talks or agent signings were eliminated in NBA 2K10's My Player feature.
Having said that, career progression is certainly one of those aspects you need to be aiming for. Constant improvement of your skills is indeed vital towards career progression. In order to achieve that, you will need to meet certain skill points for each game in NBA 2K10 or achieve career milestones. You can get advice for your career via the 2K Insider, which is also accessible during Draft Combine. Upon reaching the age of 38, you have the option to retire since it would be difficult for you to continue improving on your skills at this point, for obvious reasons.
Several refinements were made on some of the offensive and defensive features of NBA 2K10 to deliver realistic gameplay. The most evident change is in terms of using the turbo, which the developers have noticed many players have abused in the past. In this new iteration, developers are hoping to limit the use of turbo since it will now cause your energy meter to drop. In order to preserve your energy to last for the rest of the game, you need to decide when is the best time to activate the turbo.
The playcalling ability is back once again for NBA 2K10 and you can use it by pressing on the right stick. This will enable you to assess which player best to hand the ball to, given their respective positions on the court. You might want to take advantage of the improved Post play in NBA 2K10 though and increases your success rate while on the post. Simply move your right stick towards your right and holding it will cause the player to make a spin and free themselves as they jump towards the basket. If you flick it to the right and hold the left, you can fake your opponents to the right and return to your right to make the basket. The ability to take advantage of this improved post play requires practice and mastery for your team to blitz through your competition.
Team Up also gets quite a bunch of improvements in NBA 2K10. The same with My Player, each action will produce a significant impact on the overall franchise. Instead of offering too many players trying to catch the ball, your teammate rating is an essential concept for this year so you will find that players execute better spacing in NBA 2K10. The same refinement is also done on the AI, so there are no more frustrating plays with your AI teammates on court.
In addition to improve offensive ability, the other end of the court also had some refinements. When you activate the lock-on defense in NBA 2K10, it causes your turbo meter to drop due to the aggressive play. The developers decided to add lock-on defense this year to force the offensive player to try different directions or annoy the ball handler to take their focus away from the play. If you have trouble with the defensive play, a new defensive help rotation has been added to close off the passing lanes.
On the technical side, it is a relief that a new ability to save and quit the game has been added. This will enable you to take a break when you have something urgent to attend to and return to the game later on without having to start all over again. And with technology courtesy of ImageMetrics, the same folks responsible for GTA IV's animation, the players look as realistic and accurate as their counterparts.
As if 2K9 was not successful enough, 2K Sports wanted to raise it up another notch with NBA 2K10 that plays wonderfully on the court and creates a new standard for basketball simulation games.
