Motorstorm Pacific Rift is a Sony PlayStation 3 Car Racing game, written by Evolution Studios.

Guide to Motorstorm Pacific Rift on the PlayStation 3

MotorStorm Pacific Rift returns to the PlayStation 3 with an aim to take off this signature racing title to a whole new heights. Evolution Studios showcased Motorstorm 2 during the E3 and Leipzig event, and while the game was not yet done during that time, it is now looking more polished as the scheduled release draws near. The original game already redefined the off-road racing genre but MotorStorm Pacific Rift is hoping to make up for whatever the first game lacked and create a truly satisfying racing title.

In order to achieve that, Evolution Studios focused on enhancing the gameplay by incorporating some new features and elements. Truly, Motorstorm 2 went through some major polishing to enable players to have more control over how they want to run the game.

First things first, the game mechanics and control setup on Motorstorm Pacific Rift is similar to the original game. If you have played the first Motorstorm, it should be easy to navigate your way around the game and its controls. The most apparent improvement for Motorstorm 2 is the environmental setting, which now exudes a different atmosphere and overall feel for the game. Aside from merely serving as background for all the racing action you will get to experience, the environment also offers new challenge even to the most skilled racers.

With the new title Motorstorm Pacific Rift, racers are now pitted against various foliage and obstacles that they need to overcome. These various obstacles are scattered all throughout the various levels of the game. The environmental elements such as the jungle trees, water, mud, or sand, plays a crucial role in either slowing down or posing challenge to gamers.

For instance, water will be able to cool down your vehicle's engine in Motorstorm 2 whenever it is in danger of overheating. Driving through sand will also prove difficult, especially when taking turns, as you could either end up slipping or sliding. The Pacific Island setting for Motorstorm Pacific Rift is an ingenious way for Evolution Studios to incorporate several new tracks and courses into this new version.

When you mention the idea of a racing game, the first thought that comes to mind is the tracks. If you've been to the E3 event, you probably had the chance to demo a couple of tracks for Motorstorm Pacific Rift: Raingod Spire and Cascade Falls. However, the new Wildfire course is probably the most awaited track in Motorstorm 2. As the name implies, the track is situated in the island's volcanic section. With racers just a few feet off lava and blazing fires, this track could prove to be a challenge even to the most experienced of Motorstorm 2 racers.

The boosting capacity of your vehicles in Motorstorm Pacific Rift is also enhanced, however you need to be careful when using it as it might cause your vehicle to explode. Along with that, when your vehicle is at the point of overheating you need to stay away from hot objects that could only cause more damage. However, cooling down your vehicle is now more efficient. In fact, you can drive through water and it will quickly cool down your vehicle. Plus, there are several misting tunnels or cooling area spattered all throughout the game. All you need is to drive to them to start anew and get on with the race.

There are also new characters and moves available in Motorstorm 2. It should be fun to use the new moves that riders can perform while riding their bikes such as punching another rider. To execute that, you will only need the L1/R1 buttons.

As this is essentially a racing title, Motorstorm 2 will also get new cars (monster trucks, actually) and tracks, which will follow as a downloadable content once the game has been launched. With regards to the new monster trucks, driving through ditches and obstacle-laden paths will become much easier with a higher elevation. Since you now have a better view of the path, it will increase your responsiveness to the surroundings and where you're headed.

Motorstorm Pacific Rift will also feature a new camera switching technique. Switching the camera view to the driver behind the vehicle will enable you to feel like you are actually running the vehicle instead of having the camera view placed on the hood, where you do not get a full perspective of the surroundings.

The new multiplayer additions available in Motorstorm 2 aims to set this game apart from the original release, most notably the 4-player offline split-screen racing and over 16 multi-route tracks. There are several ways to enjoy the multiplayer features of this game, especially now that you have an option for leaderboards and matchmaking through the PSN. There is also the new and fun photo mode, which upload images that you can use as your desktop background or for sharing among your friends.

Other enhanced features in Motorstorm 2 include the full XMB support, which enables you to save replays and watch them later as videos by accessing it at the PS3 main menu. Meanwhile, you can also customize the soundtracks for Motorstorm Pacific Rift by importing tracks from your PS3's hard drive. If not, then the 40 available soundtracks in the game should offer enough choices and variety.

The AI system for Motorstorm 2 has also been improved, so you can expect the action to intensify. This time out, AI players will also serve as your competition and they will do anything to stay ahead of you. It will feel more like an actual race now and you need to step up your race if you don't want to end up last.

Having the Pacific Island setting as background for all these exciting races indeed serves more venue for grandiose yet challenging race paths. With the development team's dedication to use the environment as foreground for all the action, you can expect this game to be visually accurate and stunning.

As the release for Motorstorm Pacific Rift gets closer, expect the developers to make last-minute fixing as it prepares to race into action. This is going to be one great ride for the PlayStation 3 gamers!
