Guide to Moto GP 09 10 on the PlayStation 3
Moto GP 09/10 has to take huge strides in order to revive interest for the franchise, which has suffered from being stale as of late despite releasing solid entries in the past. Loyal fans of the franchise are aware of this but it has consistently taken a step further when it comes to innovating and truly delivering a real-life bike riding sim. But as Monumental Games take over development for Moto GP 09/10, critics are already claiming that this game will produce several converts with the reinvigoration of an old series that has stamped its worth on the industry.
Last year's release was specifically shaky but Capcom is not giving up on the franchise. Moto GP 09/10 is the product of that persistence and the publisher has high hopes that this game will restore the franchise's old glory days. Monumental Studios is fully aware of the challenge but they are not going to settle with a mere retread on Moto GP 09/10. Taking out materials from both the 09 and 2010 season, this game is not just aiming to redefine the franchise but the genre as a whole.
Right off the bat, a few issues already face the developers of Moto GP 09/10 at Monumental Studios. How do you make a game seem fresh and innovative when it has featured the same real-life circuits and vehicles it did in the past? Instead of trying to overcome that, the developers used the fundamentals of the franchise as a leverage wherein they can introduce countless new features. But still changes are inevitable in Moto GP 09/10 and one of the most evident areas of improvement is the control system. This is the first major step that Monumental Studios has taken, such that they opted to forego of the lauded control system Climax Studios has previously introduced into the series to favor accessibility. Hardcore MotoGP fans might scuff at them for this bold move but it turned out for the better. Moto GP 09/10 has now joined the ranks of standard racing fares, such that you can use the right trigger to throttle and the left trigger is assigned for the front brake. You must then use a face button to activate the rear brake. Thus, the overall control mechanic is no longer as complex as it used to be, which is something that developers are hoping would also not take anything away from the intensity of the playing experience.
To compliment the changes incorporated into the control system, Moto GP 09/10 will also benefit from an improved handling system. It all begins with a renewed focus on tyre model. For instance, putting on enough gas as you are trying to make it through the corner, you will notice that the tyre will run a bit faster. Or, when you are skidding and sliding too often, then it will cause your tyre to wear out easily in Moto GP 09/10. And as any experienced racer must be aware of by now, the amount of wear that your tyre is exposed to could have its own consequences in the handling department.
The difficult level options in Moto GP 09/10 also offer a wide range of choices for gamers of varying skill level. Hence, while there is something here to please hardcore gamers, beginners are not totally alienated with the game's difficulty setting. But a more interesting aspect about the changes made with the difficulty level of Moto GP 09/10 is that developers did not tinker with the way the bike handles. Instead, your choice of difficulty level will significantly impact the AI drivers you are going up against with in various game modes. For instance, playing on Gentle difficulty setting would pit you easily up against your opponents. But Insane difficulty setting will place you next to tough competitors that have been known to top lap times. But still, the difficulty settings in Moto GP 09/10 still follows the same physics model employed all throughout the game to keep things fair for everyone.
Career Mode probably steals the spotlight on Moto GP 09/10. Taking aside all the impressive visuals and overall presentation that is without question a great leap from past games, what is most absorbing about the Career Mode is the level of intense play, such that you cannot seem to put down that controller once you got started. On-track action is highly tied to the development in Career Mode for Moto GP 09/10, which is comparable to what Codemasters did with GRID. You must begin your career by creating your team and a rider, then you have to cover all basic responsibility for building that team, such as branding, research and development, and sponsorship. Your goal must then to bring that team in the front of the Moto GP 09/10 pack from the 125cc grid. The concept might be pretty basic and all too familiar, but it is in the execution wherein this game stands out from the rest. You could even access an event calendar in the game, which shows you forthcoming race schedules, completion dates, and other details that make it seem realistic.
To make things interesting, the Career Mode in Moto GP 09/10 is further spiced up by the addition of a Reputation System. Thus, you not only get to enjoy straight-up racing but will also have another layer of depth into the racing experience. Will earn higher grades for stylish riding, but if you go for more adventurous and execute bold moves on the race track, then you might even find your way into an A grade at Moto GP 09/10.
The online play is where Moto GP 09/10 serves up its most exciting innovations. There's a myriad of online game modes that gamers have come to expect, then tossing in the splitscreen, which is an area wherein Monumental Studios seem to have achieved great strides in during the past. The developers have also implemeted other online features in Moto GP 09/10 outside of the usual racing modes, such as something similar to FIFA's Live Season Mode for more interactivity. There is a 20-player multiplayer racing that you can compete online though. There is a lobby system that fans can gain access to to see what races are coming up and which ones they could join in.
On the technical aspect, Moto GP 09/10 has obviously improved in terms of the overall presentation. The menus are far more organized and appear to be intuitively adapted. The races you can compete in pretty standard fare but have nonetheless seemed livelier as compared to the past. It was the little touches that Monumental incorporated into the game that made a whole lot of difference. Even the circuits and peripheral vision during the race are well executed such that racing in Moto GP 09/10 is a thrill in itself, which is the main point behind any successful racer.
The Moto GP franchise might have been fazed with a few hurdles on the track, but it managed to get back up with Moto GP 09/10. And as the latest racer off the franchise returns to the PS3, there is more content to be enjoyed here. Don't expect to find the same old gameplay you've all witnessed in the past because this game is teeming with innovations, so make sure to tighten your seat belt for this is going to be a bumpy yet fun ride.
