Guide to Lego Rock Band on the PlayStation 3
Rock Band Lego changes the way you look at the rhythm game genre as it delivers a more kid-friendly version to the PS3, for both Lego- and music-loving PS3 gamers! This game is truly on a league of its own such that it masterfully blends together humor and style while you witness these Lego-ized characters strumming their musical notes for a truly one of a kind playing experience. And despite the seemingly lack of gameplay content on the Rock Band Lego edition for the PS3, the offerings here are still good enough for you to spend a good deal of time playing the game. The fact that this genre has earned family friendly license versions can be a testament of the success of this franchise and you certainly cannot go wrong with this one.
The story for Rock Band Lego is not that definitive; however, it does help to provide a bit of background and motivational push to make gameplay more exciting. Rock Band Lego integrates highly active and fun cutscenes, as it follows a set of Legos on their way to achieving super stardom. This journey won't be an easy one though as they'd face a good mix of unpredictable and fun cutscenes, which can go from elaborate to ridiculous, or a little bit of both.
The insistence on slapstick humor in Rock Band Lego is recurrent, given the success it had with previous Lego games. And for a nice twist, it has been incorporated with the typical gameplay mechanic with the first Rock Band game such that your objective is to correctly strum the tunes according to the notes that appear on-screen. There are a lot more interesting aspects into the gameplay for Rock Band Lego and looking into each one will enable you to better understand your gaming options or ways to further enhance your rocking experience.
To experience the most thrill in Rock Band Lego, the Rock Power Challenges is one of the most exciting features to play. Here is where you get an equal excitement from the story and gameplay done so in a unique way. The Rock Power Challenge is available in certain stages during the tour, such that your band is able to utilize the power of music to perform any in-game action, whether it be destroying buildings, escaping a charging dinosaur, summoning a powerful thunderstorm, among other things. When you are playing a particular song, a music video is triggered to play at the back replacing the normal stage setting. Think of the dreamscapes feature in The Beatles Rock Band, with the difference here being that it takes on a more humorous approach. Whether the idea of taking turns for each song though suits you or not and what the idea behind the developers incorporating this mechanism, this is what happens with the Rock Power Challenge in Rock Band Lego. But that is the distinctive bit of this new feature though; it asks you to throw logic out the window and makes an excellent sidetrip from your usual rock jam sessions.
In addition to Rock Power Challenge, another major feature that has been added into Rock Band Lego is the Super Easy Mode. On this one, there is no need to utilize the fret buttons for both bass and guitar. Although you can still see the colored notes appear on-screen, you can hit any or none of the frets provided that you continue strumming on. The same goes with the drums, such that you can hit any pad without worrying about whether it is the correct one since timing is your only concern here. The kick drum feature has been made automatic as well and you have the option to toggle it on or off, depending on the difficulty level you choose to play in. In addition to that, the Super Easy Mode in Rock Band Lego completely eliminates the pitch measuring feature such that the vocals are now represented by this bouncing ball visual that appears on the lyrics.
The setlist for Rock Band Lego offers enough variety and excitement though. You can access a good mix of various tracks from different genres, such as modern or contemporary hits, classic rock, alternative, and several others. This is also one feature that sets this game apart from its competitors since majority of the songs offered in the lineup are mainly rock tunes. Whether it's contemporary pop, reworked rock song versions, and novelty song choices that you want, Rock Band Lego has something for all types of music fanatics. The only downside to the setlist for this game though is the fact that there is not enough variety in terms of quantity, with only about 45 tracks in all. Unless the game could come up with some additional content, the setlist could easily feel repetitive and loses its luster.
One disappointing fact with Rock Band Lego though is the lack of online mode to play. This is something that fans would have wanted, but the developers insisted to miss out on this one. However, all is not lost though since the multiplayer feature for Rock Band Lego does help to suffice the idea that rocking out with friends can be a great way to enjoy this game and have fun. You can then bring three friends over so you can put together a foursome band, consisting of the bassist, guitarist, drummer, and vocalist. This is so much more fun than you would have expected and be able to realize your dreams of being a rock star yourselves!
But above all this, the accessibility of the new features and the developers' objective to make this game suitable for all gamer levels is really at the heart of Rock Band Lego. These are all achieved in an adorable presentation, which helps to bring forth that wacky LEGO personality that fans have come to love about this franchise. Since the opening custscene for this game, it has never let up. Rock Band Lego relives the same imagery that has made the Rock Band franchise popular in the first place, wherein the band is atop this speeding vehicle as they strum or beat onto their instruments as they continue to navigate these various locations. If that's not enough, you can also customize the costumes of your little band and this option is unlocked as you move further along into the story mode. Although the PS3 version of this game does not exceed the physical limits of the game, it was able to produce sharp and vibrant images for a totally rocking experience.
It is unclear though as to which particular age group Rock Band Lego is for. Its charming and adorable Lego characters make it fun for kids, plus there is also enough challenging games to suit adult players, even Rock Band fanatics. But the ability of the game to provide a satisfying rock experience each time out makes Rock Band Lego a good way to enjoy casual music gaming on your PS3.
