Lego Batman is the latest offering from Traveller's Tales to arrive on the PlayStation 3. Riding on the success of its previous LEGO releases, such as the Star Wars and Indiana Jones, Lego Batman sets to take on a comic approach to the dark knight of Gotham City. Due to its highly successful previous releases, the developers decided to not change the formula for this game. And since Lego Batman is not based on a specific movie or comic book story, this offered much freedom for the game creator for exploration.
The initial reviews for the game offers varied viewpoints, and concerning various aspects of Lego Batman. First off, gamers of the Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Star Wars might find it disappointing that it basically takes on the same route as the said games did. On the other side, fans of both Lego and Batman will be thrilled by the idea of a Lego-ized superhero taking on an easy to navigate world of puzzles and tasks.
The most interesting aspect of Lego Batman has got to be the story. Without a movie to base the story on, the writers at Traveller's Tales had to come up with an original concept for the game. The opening scene features the legendary villains from the Batman series escaping from Arkham Asylum. Then, they dissipate in various means of transportation via an armored vehicle and Joker riding his helicopter.
As the villains experienced new found freedom, they wreak havoc all over the city of Gotham in Lego Batman. This part of Lego Batman is indeed one of the most fascinating parts of the entire game, and it suits all types of audiences and ages. As Lego Batman follows the quest of Batman and Robin's quests, the story fails to take on a deeper perspective. They are basically restricted to merely hunting down the bad guys that are set to destroy the rest of Gotham.
Since the developers thrive so much on the foundation built by previous Lego game releases, some gamers might find it repetitive at times. The game structure in Lego Batman is undeniably familiar, which entails traveling through various levels and platforms. As you do this, you'd have to build blocks, solve puzzles, and fight enemies on the way.
The basic gameplay mechanics in Lego Batman are divided into 6 episodes, as opposed to both Lego Indy and Lego Star Wars' 3 each. For the first 3 episodes in Lego Batman, it will have the dynamic duo of Batman and Robin with the Batcave serving as the central hub. Once you have completed the first 3 episodes of Lego Batman, you will now be able to unlock the next set of 3. The latter set offers an interesting twist to the entire game as you will get the chance to play as the villains, with Arkham Asylym serving as your home base.
For the second set of 3 episodes in Lego Batman, we've already mentioned you can play the bad guys. So, the next interesting question is: who are the playable bad guys? You won't be disappointed with the list of playable characters that include The Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Killer Croc, Harley Quinn, and Scarecrow. The catch is, you will only be able to play any of these villains if you manage to beat them during the main game.
Consequently, when you are playing as the bad guys, instead of against them, the story will have changes as well. For instance, when playing the carnival level as both Batman and Robin, your objective is to save Commissioner Gordon. However, if you are playing as the villains, your task is to fight him and the superheroes of Gotham City. Definitely interesting!
Since Lego Batman depends on the co-op dynamic for its gameplay, the same goes when you are playing the villains. Whichever you choose will have some other villain paired up with you, only with a different objective than Batman and Robin's tandem. Hence, the basic types of campaign you can opt for in Lego Batman includes the Hero Campaign and the Villain Campaign.
Both the Hero and Villain Campaigns involve 3 chapters, each having 5 missions. However, it is important to note that the larger selection of villains than heroes in this game, opting for the Villain Campaign offers more variety and experience. Whether you are playing as a hero or villain though, your main motivation for this game is the ability to unlock cool stuffs to use. For the heroes, you can unlock suits that will each provide new abilities into your arsenal and enable you to progress in Lego Batman.
Lego Batman consists of a co-op dynamic game, like with Lego Star Wars. However, the main difference lies in how they fight since there are no lightsabers on this one. Instead, Lego Batman thrives in upfront combat and a wide selection of high-tech gadgets available to either Batman or Robin. To help both characters cope with the type of combat, their range of standard attacks are infused with new moves including grapples and throws.
Speaking of new moves, Lego Batman also showcases new gadgets and tools for Batman. A wide variety of suits are also available for Batman, which consequently provides access to various levels in this game. The most notable among the dark knight's suits in Lego Batman is his demolition suit and extendable cape. Batman's demolition suit enables him to easily blow up traps and huge objects before he is victimized by them. Meanwhile, the extendable cape enables him to glide towards long distances. An exciting feature in Batman's ability is that he is able to simultaneously use his gadget while climbing up a wall or certain levels.
The other side of the duo in Lego Batman is not neglected though since Robin also got his own lineup of suits to choose from. First off, there is the magnetic suit which makes it possible to walk on metallic surfaces. Then, there's the tech-suit which gives him the capacity to control gadgets including an RC car.
As for the technical side, the environments in Lego Batman are far better than the previous Lego games. The audio is well taken care of, thanks to Elfman's musical score. And while Batman is quite popular among fans already, playing them in fun Lego style will certainly offer a brand new perspective in Batman's crime fighting adventures!
