Guide to Lair on the PlayStation 3
Lair for PS3 is based on warfare between two kingdoms. At one time, the Mokai and Asylian cultures shared the same religion, and lived in a peaceful world.
Disaster struck in the form of volcanoes that almost destroyed the Mokai people. While the Asylian lands were left unharmed by nature, the Mokai soon made war to steal what they lost to the volcanoes.
The character you play is Rohn. He is an Asylian dragon rider, and leader of the peoples trying to rid the land of the Mokai.
In order to play Lair, you will need to master the very tricky control method used while flying. You are forced to use the motion controls of the sixaxis controller, which makes it very difficult to get your dragon to perform very accurate movements. If you spend the time to master this new type of control, you will enjoy the rest of the game, if not, it will become a very frustrating experience as you miss targets and kill your own soldiers.
Lair for PS3 is organized into 5 chapters, each with a set of missions. The missions in each level can be frustrating as the war itself is not clear. For the most part, the strategies are the same, just a different kind of beast or army to kill off. Likewise, the armies, enemy dragons, and other warriors are fairly predictable.
Advancing to the next level and gaining medals depends on how quickly you complete your mission, and how well it is carried out.
On the other hand, Lair for PS3 has a fairly well developed political plot line, that will (at times) make you question which side you are on.
Most of your battles will be in the air, on back of a dragon. You may fight other dragons and riders, or try to take out enemy soldiers and moving armies.
Your main weapon is the dragon, and its ability to create flames. You can also use the dragon to claw, bite, and tear into the enemy. It's also possible to get onto enemy dragons and fight their riders, before leaping back onto your own again.
The graphics and animation of the characters within Lair are well produced and realistic.
Some areas of the game have truly stunning visual effects and detail (the scales shining on the dragons), while others appear unfinished, and even flat.
In some cases, there are areas of unfinished scenery and the armies of attacking soldiers may appear almost paper thin, and have very little movement.
The sound effects are realistic and clear. The voice acting and background music are good quality and realistic.
If you have 7.1 Surround Sound, you will definitely enjoy the quality of the audio effects and music.
Although many people have been eagerly awaiting the debut of Lair for Playstation 3, the consensus is there are many other games that are much better in terms of graphics and game control.
This feeling of frustration is made worse by the fact you can only play the game against the computer, and only play the one character of Rohn.
On the other hand, the game does have excellent audio, and a story line that will make you think about war and politics.
