Guide to King Of Fighters XII on the PlayStation 3
King of Fighters XII serves as the milestone for SNK Playmore's long standing fighting franchise that has seen major development since it first came out as a 2D fighter on the now discontinued NeoGeo arcade. Since the hardware capacity of current gen consoles have evidently improved, the developers took the hint and developed a new game in King of Fighters XII that fitted the shifting demands of gamers and the gaming market alike.
SNK Playmore, developers of King of Fighters XII, were known for delivering such games as Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and Samurai Showdown - fighting games as their main forte and they are certainly offering up a lot of new surprises for this new iteration. The look and feel of King of Fighters XII are totally revamped and enhanced, however the standard fighting mechanics remain largely the same to continue the tradition of this superb fighting series.
The aesthetic features of King of Fighters XII might have been completely overhauled but for the most part it is still the same old fighter that fans came to love. The basic gameplay relegates this as a one-on-one fighting game consisting of teams. You must begin by choosing your team and competing with other players who step up to the challenge. You can either compete with other real life gamers or the AI opponents in King of Fighters XII.
The control scheme is pretty standard with a few relevant but subtle changes to make every movement more precise and a lot more challenging. First off, the control provides more weight to each character now, providing them with more substance than ever before. As for executing your fighting moves in King of Fighters XII, you must now use a two-button system when throwing, specifically both punch buttons. This new system makes throwing a lot more difficult but it was a conscious effort on the part of the developers. It takes a bit of getting used to before you can precisely execute throws in King of Fighters XII, making things harder and riskier for the fighters. Having said that, the possibility of accidental throws in this game are much slimmer since you have to commit to two buttons instead of one. In fact, you might even be more vigilant with the way you use the throw command since it could leave your fighter vulnerable to attacks and cause their health bar to dip a lot quicker than you might have bargained for.
Speaking of health, each character in King of Fighters XII come with a standard health bar and power meter. You can see them at the bottom of the screen and these are crucial elements for executing powerful attacks. A new ability known as evasive roll is a new technique available for your fighter, allowing you to get out of a potentially tricky situation. Or better yet, you can get your fighter to perform a counter, which can be done at any point during gameplay in King of Fighters XII. This allows your player to immediately follow-up an opponent's attack which when properly timed will effectively knock down your opponent.
A great addition to the gameplay for King of Fighters XII is the all-new Critical Counter system. Once activated, you can charge the “critical counter” meter until it is full. Whenever you launch a powerful attack against an opponent, you will see a flash of green light appear onscreen. This will indicate the best time to execute a “critical counter” and you will automatically stun the opponent. For better success, you can also follow this up with a custom combo, which is another useful gameplay feature in King of Fighters XII. This one is not unlike other combo systems in most fighting games; instead, you need to fill up the “critical counter” gauge to execute this on your enemies. Some of the characters in the game come with their own standard combos and they are still available in this game.
For the veteran gamers of the series, you'd be pleased to hear that several of the classic fighters are returning to fill up the roster in King of Fighters XII. Among those returning in this new game are Robert Garcia, Terry and Andy Bogard, Kim Kaphwan, Ash Crimson, Iori Yagami, among others. The rest of the characters has been completely revamped to add more abilities into their arsenal or provide a new dimension into their fighting capacity. Included in the revamped characters in King of Fighters XII are Sie Kensou, Joe Higashi, Andy Bogard, among others.
The PS3 version of King of Fighters XII will also introduce two exclusive players in its lineup: Mature and Elizabeth Blantorche. Mature is a femme fatale that comes with a beehive hair whose moves have been largely tweaked. However, she now possesses a shorter range for her attacks. Meanwhile, the magical girl Elizabeth Blantorche makes a return after appearing in the 11th installment off the franchise. Her set of moves has been slightly changed in King of Fighters XII but she will still fight with a riding crop.
King of Fighters XII comes with an interesting online play feature that offers gamers plenty of things to do. There are differences in the properties during online play depending on the console you are playing it in. For the PS3 version, however, it comes with standard matchmaking services and lots of features including quick matches, ranking battles, skill matches, and online leaderboards. In addition to that, the PS3 version of King of Fighters XII also comes with a Clan Mode that puts you up against another team in a 3 on 3 match. If you want to relive all these action, there is the Replay Editor that enables you to upload and share your matches for other gamers via the PlayStation Network.
The biggest and most evident difference between King of Fighters XII and previous releases off the franchise would have to be the brand new visuals. Indeed, it is a refreshing change from such a classic franchise and although the gameplay provides enough satisfaction, the new visuals employed are much more pleasing to the eye. First off, the characters in King of Fighters XII are a huge visual leap from previous games and their animation are smoother now than ever. The arenas where the battles are held also exemplify a lot of details and vibrant colors.
King of Fighters XII might provide a fresh perspective from an old franchise, but it has dedicated itself to reliving the gaming tradition that has earned its following in the gaming industry. If you want to experience the same absorbing gameplay in a new light, then this game must be on your list.
