Killzone 3 is a Sony PlayStation 3 Action Shooter game, written by Guerrilla Games.

Guide to Killzone 3 on the PlayStation 3

The second game off the Killzone franchise did not get away without any issues to it. Thus, Killzone 3 is in for a tough challenge to hopefully correct those issues and introduce more variety into the gameplay to entice fans to give the series another chance after a not-so-successful sequel release. There are two notable features to the third installment in the franchise – its support for 3D gaming and the PlayStation Move. There was initial doubt amongst critics that the incorporation of motion-technology into the game will take away the serious appeal from the game, but you will find out more later on whether it works or not.

Killzone 3 is a PS3-exclusive shooter from Guerilla Games from a series that is notorious for drumming up hype prior to its release. The first game of the franchise debuted on the PlayStation 2 and has since then evolved largely to offer one of the most compelling shooters in the gaming market. For the most part, the third iteration is focused on correcting and improving on the lacking aspects of the second game to sort of redeem the franchise because Guerrilla is not going to be apologetic about it.

The most evident change in Killzone 3's gameplay is the revised control sensitivity. The second game admittedly offered sluggish movement such that gamers felt a weight in each step for the character that either be a good or bad thing, depending on the in-game situation. But competitive gamers cannot afford to take that risk, such that this was a welcome improvement in the gameplay for a smoother and more precise execution of actions. The gun recoil has also been reduced in Killzone 3 such that you can effectively use your machine gun to kill someone from a long range shooting distance.

Another gameplay aspect that will be undergoing a massive overhaul in Killzone 3 is its class system. This time out, you will have access to the different classes instead of slowly unlocking them as you progress deep into the game. What you will unlock are more weapons and abilities for your class to help beef up your arsenal. And speaking of classes, your options for this game has been trimmed down. Now, you will only have five classes to choose from in the game: Tactician, Engineer, Marksman, Infiltrator, and the Field Medic. Understandably, each of the classes will have their own unique abilities to them that will benefit your crew as you set out in the mission.

Some of those that have seen the preview for the revised class system for Killzone 3 have noted about the lack of upgrades and weapons available per class. Currently, gamers can access three primary weapon choices, three secondary weapon choices, and two ability trees for every class there are in the game and there are three possible upgrades for that. The developers might have intentionally done this to allow you to unlock everything within a relatively shorter period of time. However, it might be disadvantageous for those who like to stick using a single class such that they might lose a bit of depth in terms of combat.

The auto aim function has been made a lot easier in Killzone 3, which is good news for beginners but could a bit too forgiving for hardcore gamers. However, it seems as though the developers are still gathering feedback about this system through the beta that is being held for the title. But one thing that gamers will surely appreciate is the variety that is incorporated into the multiplayer maps. For a game with such a large scope, it was only fitting to be able to access a huge map to ensure that it contributes to the replay value of the game.

The integration of the PlayStation Move might be a far-fetched experimentation on the part of the developers for Killzone 3. The motion-technology, even with the Nintendo Wii, has always been an issue with regards to mastering the controls and its motion. This game was unable to get away with it and the problem with using the PlayStation Move was very much evident when trying to aim at your enemies. For some reason, the crosshairs just would not fit into your target and it defeats the purpose of aiming in the first place.

Thankfully, the 3D element in Killzone 3 was a welcome addition into the game. It is considered as relatively unobtrusive such that it integrates nicely into the game. It also contributes to adding more depth into the game environment for a more immersive gaming world.

Right now, Killzone 3 is already looking quite the badass game that Guerrilla Games promised fans when it released the original game off the franchise way back in the PS2. Although it is now home to a new and more powerful system, it has managed to preserve the same old gaming tradition that fans loved from the beginning.
