Namco Bandai is also trying to take advantage of the graphic upgrade as Katamari Forever runs on a 1080p graphical resolution as compared to the PS2. It is not just the gameplay that provides a mix of the old and new but the developers wanted to exhibit that via the visual presentation wherein they retain the old formula but tossing in some new ones on the mix.
It all begins with new visual filters available in Katamari Forever. There's actually four of them: Normal Tone, New Tone, Wood Tone, and Comic Tone. Finally, the Comic Tone in Katamari Forever hopes to relive the graphical fad innovated during the early 2000s, which emulates a cel-shaded game. By successfully doing so, you can also regain the King's memory, which makes it all the more important. From time to time, you will encounter columns of light that appear in the game world as you progress your way through the gameplay. If you try to roll over any of these columns, it result in a suction effect that automatically draws in objects toward your Katamari ball. Thus, these columns of lights are a useful tool to have in Katamari Forever, especially when you are nearing the end of a level. Whenever you successfully restore color to a particular level within the set time limit, you can move on and enter your next set of challenge.
The developers promised to offer some new variants in the gameplay for Katamari Forever. However, any old gamers to the franchise will realize that the concept of variants is intrinsic to the franchise but there is just a distinctive increase of them in Katamari Forever. Your activity all throughout gameplay will not be limited to mere picking up things and allowing them to become bigger. You can now perform a variety of things on the colorless world of Katamari Forever. These are all made possible with the new set of the Prince's ability, such as a boost in his powers and roll-up ability. One of his new abilities include being able to suck up nearby objects. The Prince Hop is another new ability in Katamari Forever, wherein you are able to send the Katamari flying towards your intended direction with just a squeeze of the trigger. The Prince is also now capable of breezing through a given level by building up speed on his sprint move. This new ability will really prove useful if you want to navigate sections in a rapid manner to facilitate in the continued growth of stuffs you pick up.
And speaking of levels, there are new stages introduced in Katamari Forever to add more variety and increase your playing time. It is not just the number of stages or levels that has been changed but also the format in each stage. Now, instead of destroying a particular level, you also get to create. However, rolling up remains to be an integral part of gameplay in Katamari Forever, as it does in the entire series. But new and old gamers should be equally pleased to find more variety. Plus, given that there are more than 30 levels available in Katamari Forever, each one will showcase a distinctive kind of environment. For example, at one stage you will be asked to deliver water to the environment, fill a barren dessert with greenery, or flower plants during the spring.
If there's one thing that will disappoint loyal gamers to the franchise, it is the lack of new music in Katamari Forever. Most of the soundtrack included in the game are “remixed” from old tracks in the franchise. Admittedly though, these “remixed” tracks has been able to deliver fantastic background music into the title, but will not be enough for those who are expecting something new to listen to given that the music in the Katamari franchise are an integral aspect of the gameplay.
Katamari Forever provides an ecclectic blend of the old and new versions of gameplay levels, topped with a great mixture of visual styles, Katamari fans won't be disappointed as they make a return for another gaming time on the PlayStation3.
