Guide to Just Cause 2 on the PlayStation 3

Just Cause 2 for the PS3 serves as a redemption for the flop that the original game was. Fans who enjoyed the first game might seem a bit drawn off by this conclusion, but Just Cause 2 is proving to be a major leap from its predecessor. While the first game appeared to be a Grand Theft Auto-wannabe for its unsuccessful attempt at maximizing the sandbox genre, this one is offering more tightness and control in a game that inflicts chaos all over.

Just Cause 2, in paper, looks like an extremely enjoyable game. What with the massive island setting to explore and a lot of thrilling gameplay features that take you in for an intense combat on and off the ground, one cannot help but be excited with what Just Cause 2 has to offer this time out. The more interesting aspect about this game is that it gives you the opportunity to freely play around with what is offered you. You have all these incredible set pieces and you, as the gamer, have the control as to how the events are played out in Just Cause 2. That amount of control is rare to find these days in the video game industry, so make sure to make the most of it!

To get you started on the fun, first you need to get to know a little more about the main protagonist for Just Cause 2 – special agent Rico Rodriguez. He is an over-the-top kind of special agent who likes to blow things up and is in for any kind of adventure. He is dispatched to the island of Panau, which is oppressed by its dictator Baby Panay. But Rico's main mission in Just Cause 2 is to discover the whereabouts of Tim Sheldon, a former boss and friend, and kill him when he can. But before he reaches his final destination, Rico is met with a lot of adventures along the way, in the form of various side missions, such as the one involving his attempt to rescue informant Karl Blaine. It is only inevitable that Rico will face more chaos in Just Cause 2 as he uncovers several propaganda that is spread all throughout the people of the island, all of which are longing for freedom.

As for the island of Panau, it is a massive setting for a video game spanning up to 400 miles of area. Hence, this opens up a lot of opportunities for gamers to explore and bring chaos in Just Cause 2. The game world has a lot of things going for it such as key missions, faction missions, challenges, stronghold takeovers, and over 300 various settlements. And for each one of these, you can enjoy a packed gameplay experience. What is more interesting with Just Cause 2's setting is the amount of destructible objects or features you can find here, giving you lots of stuffs to break and destroy.

Freedom and control also extends to the gameplay for Just Cause 2. Here, you can use your own individual approach and tactics when dealing with your pursuers or navigating the dull terrains of the game world. There is no one definite route to take and as long as it gets you somewhere, then you are free to take whatever path that pleases you. Expect Just Cause 2 to also feature huge explosions, guns, and a lot of silly and even unimaginable stunts that nonetheless never ceases to satisfy. Hence, you can run for several hours of play and yet you are still just merely scratching on the surface of this game – that's how deep and varied the gameplay experience is!

But the core of the gameplay for Just Cause 2 is more than just spreading chaos. You can earn point rewards if you string together various acts of destruction. This requires a bit of getting used to and a lot of strategy to materialize. As if taking down structures into bits is not satisfying enough, Just Cause 2 has a few more elements up its sleeve to differentiate it from your regular third-person shooter. And that leads you towards two of Rico's best tools in the game: the grappling hook and parachute.

These two basic tools are what sets Just Cause 2 apart. You need to think outside of the box in order for Rico to do more damage during game action with these tools, depending on how well you use it to your advantage. First off, the grappling hook makes everything else change in Just Cause 2. You can affix it to perform nearly any function you can think of. When navigating landscapes, you can use the grappling hook to climb up walls and cliffs more efficiently and without effort. You can also use it to grab at your enemies and yank them towards you. The impressive range of the item enables you to do more wonders than you can possibly think of, so make sure to experiment with your options.

Meanwhile, the parachute takes your freedom of control and movement in Just Cause 2 another notch. You can deploy it as many times as you prefer, especially when Rico has to navigate cliffs and other elevated areas in the game. One impressive aspect about the stunt parachute in Just Cause 2 is how fairly easy the controls work. It does impose a certain level of challenge though, especially in terms directing Rico in mid-air while trying to fight against the natural flow of air. You can also use it in conjunction with the grappling hook such that you can latch on any hard surface you can find for a speedier navigation of the island features of Just Cause 2.

Aside from the grappling hook and parachute, Rico will also be carrying his PDA all throughout his quest in Just Cause 2. He is equipped with own physical abilities that give him advantage when it comes to contending the natural forces and the opponents that face him, hoping to halt his progress. He can run, jump, and wield dual SMGs like the special agent he is. Meanwhile, he must also scan the field for weapons in Just Cause 2 because it is not directly handed to him right off the bat. You are lucky though knowing that they are available in a bountiful supply. But while weapons are hefty, the same story does not apply for the ammunitions. Hence, you need to further your search to ensure that your guns never run dry for you'll never know when you'd be confronted with enemies.

There are quite a few features from the original game that were either taken out or changed in Just Cause 2. First off, beginners no longer have the assistance of auto-targeting in this game. Instead, you can now aim at your own will but it also opens up several creative ways at shooting. It surely is a more exciting approach to improving your shooting or approach the gameplay as a whole, instead of forcefully entering you into boring tutorials. The grappling hook also gets a lot of enhancements in Just Cause 2, such that it is tied to your left arm and can be operated using the left trigger.

Visually, Just Cause 2 is way better than the original in several aspects, though this is not to say that the first game was faulty in this aspect, it is just that the sequel has gone great strides to improve what the predecessor delivered. The draw distance is rendered in real-time and it produced impressive results. All the other visual details though with the environment and the lighting were also done in just the right amount of care and detail. There are minor issues with the controls for Just Cause 2 though, however it did little to affect the playing experience though.

It can be said with confidence that Just Cause 2 is more than just a fun game to play – it is a major leap for the franchise! With all the right refinements and the sense of freedom awarded to gamers, the game's potential for the PS3 is indeed sky-high.
