InFamous is a Sony PlayStation 3 Action Platform game, written by Sucker Punch.

Guide to InFamous on the PlayStation 3

InFamous is the latest addition to the lineup of PS3 games set for release this year. Its developer, Sucker Punch, were the same folks who also handled the Sly Cooper series of games on the PS2. This time out though, expect a major change as InFamous is going to be totally different from their previous outing. With a solid story that will involve tactical decision-making skills from gamers, this one will keep you engaged from start to finish as it fully immerses you into the game world.

Before you get further into the game, the most basic premise of InFamous' gameplay lies in the story. Indeed, the story is an essential component for InFamous. The game world is set in the fictional Empire City, which offers an open-world game experience. Here, gamers will take on the role of Cole, which is the central character for InFamous. Cole is not just any ordinary character, something of which you will soon realize.

But first, a little background on the events that transpired before the start of InFamous. Empire City was bombed and led to the destruction of the entire city. The bomb explosion was followed by a mysterious infection rampantly spreading throughout the entire population, forcing its residents and authorities to abandon the city. Empire City started to turn into an abandoned, lawless place and thus the society in which Cole has known has collapsed. However, he is quick to realize that he was the only one to survive this deadly explosion but not without some odd changes.

The explosion that hit Empire City left Cole with electricity-based powers, unlike the average, messenger boy he used to be. We'll be discussing more on Cole's superpowers in InFamous a little later but for now, let's focus on the story. The storytelling method for InFamous does not utilize visuals or renders, instead it follows a 2D art style that develops along with the narrative.

As a superhero game, players to InFamous are given a lot of game choices that will spell how the rest of the game's story develops. Indeed, it focuses on the psychological aspect of the story and eventually turns into a morality tale that lets you choose to go either on the side of the good or evil. Your choices also produce quite dynamic effects on the society and the people who are part of it, as you can tell from their reactions toward you. Thus, there is so much interactivity going on in the world of InFamous and the conflicts of your life as a superhero (or villain, whichever you choose).

Your first option in InFamous requires a choice between the hero or antihero, but this is mostly a third-person experience. Use the right stick to control the perspective and the left to command the movements of your character. You can utilize all the face and shoulder buttons to execute any one of Cole's abilities in InFamous. Other additional control schemes are not difficult but require some mastering in order to execute attacks properly. For instance, you can activate aiming mode by holding L1 and it will slightly zoom in over your shoulder's view to produce a crosshair that will set your sight unto the target. Once you have the mark right on the target, simply press R1 and you will easily blast high volts of blue electricity into your target. Indeed, that's how basic the control works in InFamous.

Gameplay-wise, the abilities of Cole in InFamous are really fun to experiment on. Cole is equipped with a wide range of good and bad electricity-based powers that are capable of becoming so powerful and destructive. Most of Cole's attacks utilize electrical powers such as throwing lightning off his hands. There are several varieties you can do with that power as well, such as conducting metal objects with it since his powers are also interactive with the environment. He can also toss sticky grenades in a throng of enemies to produce an explosion that wipes out your mob of enemies at once. Cole is also equipped with secondary abilities in InFamous such as Telekinesis, which offers more possibilities in how you approach combat in this game.

But because his powers in InFamous are electricity-based, there is also some strategy and tactical decisions involved in the use of these powers. While fighting enemies, he needs to keep an eye on both Cole's energy level while also taking care of enemies in the game. There is still some level of realism in his superpower abilities as his body cannot hold up endless amount of electricity but instead you must recharge from time to time. When it's time to refill, just look for the refill stations on the map that are marked by blue lightning bolts to make it easier for you to get to them.

InFamous is an open-world type of game, so there are several opportunities to go exploring. It is certainly made more fun with the high level of interactivity in the environment wherein you can expand the possibilities of using your superpower abilities. This is also tied up with the initial character choice that players are given, so you can also go about exploring Empire City in an effort to save or destroy it. The platforming elements of InFamous also allow more variety into how you go about your exploration.

As you continue with your exploration and level up, gamers can unlock new areas in the city. InFamous also consists of several urban exploration as you visit some areas of the cityscape that offer new vantage points and engage in a vertical combat system. And although Cole has tremendous abilities available in InFamous, there are also a few people in the city who was endowed with extraordinary skills. Thus, it will fuel some combat actions that will hone Cole's offensive and defensive combat skills.

The developers also promise to deliver new environments for InFamous, such as an all-new island that will serve as new section to Empire City. Day and night cycles are also available to produce different moods and experiences as you explore the entire city, further enhancing the open world experience. InFamous is really the type of game that lets you run around whenever and wherever you want as it offers gamers different game paths and choices. Depending on these choices made while playing through InFamous, it will also affect how your powers develop and how the citizens of Empire City react to you.

Moving over to the technical side of things, InFamous sports a solid graphics, especially when it comes to executing those electrical power attacks for Cole. As the game moves further ahead, the graphics only develop further into a polished system. Even the city has its own distinct look, which continues to open up as you go further into the different environments and unlock more areas. The different elements and details such as the claustrophobic tunnels and abandoned outdoor parks contribute to the entire atmosphere of the game.

If you still have qualms about InFamous then it's about time to let go of those preconceptions. As an entirely new game, InFamous is one superhero game that won't disappoint. With the game choices available to players, everything that happens in the game depends on how you want it to be played out.
