Guide to InFamous 2 on the PlayStation 3
The original InFamous game that released on the PlayStation 3 a few years ago was a breakthrough for Sucker Punch Production. The developer had been working on the Sly Cooper series for some time and thought about changing things up a bit. That is when the idea for InFamous came up as they wanted to develop a game that had an open world format and infused with a bit of comic book influence. However, the main drawing point for this title is the fact that players had to deal with the consequences of their action. There are various alignments provided for each player based on their unique abilities work the same way as other games driven by morality. The developers are looking to explore more of that potential that the first game offered on the gaming scene and fans who played (and enjoyed) the original title to the fullest are no doubt looking forward to what the sequel would offer them.
Cole McGrath, the protagonist from the original game, reprises his role for InFamous 2 on the PS3. He is a regular guy that was pitted into an extraordinary purpose wherein the state of the future becomes his responsibility. At the end of the first game, a creature known only as “The Beast” was foretold and that it will be the source of destruction in the city with its unmatched power. It is therefore Cole’s mission to find a professor who resides in Louisiana to help him increase his own powers and abilities. However, The Beast has already arrived in the Empire City even before he had the opportunity to make his way to the professor. After an initial battle with The Beast Cole is forced to retreat to New Marais, a city based somewhat on New Orleans.
However, The Beast is not the only thing for Cole to worry about as you control him in InFamous 2. There are also several other monsters and creatures popping out all over the city. These creatures remind gamers of another thriller game, Dead Space, wherein necromorphs are trying to attack the protagonist and destroy the remains of the game world. The only frustrating part about the game’s story and characters is the tendency for the tension to be resolved in an untimely manner. Tension is often built up with great timing and then all of a sudden it unleashes an explosive ending.
Aside from the story, there are plenty of things that differentiate InFamous 2 from its predecessor. The aesthetic changes are the most obvious right off the bat. Thankfully, these changes were made for the better especially with Cole’s traditional lightning bolts. Instead, he now shoots balls of lighting that not only feels different, but seems more exciting. The animation on Cole’s face is also very much improved such that his facial expressions were made more realistic although his appearance is largely the same, which makes it even more impressive. The voice of Cole is still familiar but is noticeably different as there is more grumpy quality to his voice that make him seem more “real” to gamers, not just a character in the video game.
The combat also experienced some slight changes in InFamous 2 for the PS3. The Amp is introduced in the sequel as Cole’s new melee weapon, which is an electrical conduit that aims to improve the primitive approach used on the first game’s melee system. This is a crucial change because there is more melee combat involved in this game than the first one. It goes well with the new twist introduced by developers in this game wherein you can add the experience points you earned from quests or beating enemies into your own currency. You can, in turn, use that to buy new moves and gain as much power as you want or need.
The decision made by gamers and the morality impact of that decision in the actual events of the game was a striking component of the original InFamous game. With the sequel, that concept is taken to another level. There are two new characters introduced in InFamous 2 – Kuo and Nix – and each of them represents the moral decisions that Cole has to make throughout the course of the game. Their struggle as Cole makes his choice is an interesting twist into the game while also opening up new missions, cutscenes, routes, and endings. In some cases, these decisions will mean new powers for Cole to possess.
There are plenty of wonderful changes and improvements that InFamous 2 promises to offer gaming fans. However, the user-generated content or UGC is the most promising new feature in the game. The main complaint with the first game is that once you collect all powers or finish all side missions and quests, it left gamers will pretty much nothing to do. The concept of the UGC makes it seem as though the game never really ends. You can therefore explore more of this open world environment as much as you’d want to. Given the success of the “Play. Create. Share.” concept introduced by LittleBigPlanet, this is a very promising prospect for the PlayStation 3 gamers and the game developers.
