The game is told via flashbacks as the game kicks off with what seems to be the main character's death. Before she was born, Nariko (the main character) was believed to be the one to fulfill the prophecy surrounding the Heavenly Sword.
Whoever wields the dangerous weapon is granted tremendous power; therefore Nariko must defend the weapon against King Bohan who wants it for himself. As her clan has grown desperate to protect the sword from evil hands, she has become their only hope.
As for the gameplay, the great thing about Heavenly Sword is that it places emphasis on the action with an unwavering focus on combat. The fact that you can't jump with Nariko enables you to focus squarely on the combat mechanics.
Heavenly Sword does manage to carry the entire experience though as the intensity of the game refuses to let down from the onset until the end.
Along with this, Heavenly Sword encourages more than the shallow action produced by button-bashing, as there really is more depth to the abilities of the main character and the title's gameplay. The key to defeating a barrage of enemies which could number up to hundreds at once is using combos and attacking with style.
By performing combos, you will earn some more combos so you can defeat the foes with more flair and vigor as you gradually move up to the next level. Along the way, either you attack using combos or doing a few attacks over and over again, you will be able to unlock combinations and more bonus content.
Not only this, Nariko possesses three different combat stances: speed, range, and power. Simply press the square or triangle button to perform a speed attack. Ranged stance is done by pressing the L1 button; meanwhile power stance is achieved by pressing on the R1 button.
To use attack combos, all you do is press the triangle or square in specific patterns or by switching stances during the mid-attack. Not only are Nariko's attacks colour coordinated, so are the enemy's attacks. This will enable you to determine which stance to use and what type of counter attack to make, so you won't end up making indistinct attacks that do not achieve anything.
However, if you are up for some real challenge, you might be a bit disappointed with the lack of variety and creativity in the enemies' attacks due to their low artificial intelligence. But overall, the game is deep enough to allow you to make some varied techniques with every attack but is quite easy to master.
If there is one thing that sets this title apart from the rest is its stunning visuals and absolutely superb animation. The background is compellingly realistic with its lush and seemingly hand-painted effect. Even Nariko's attacks are visually stimulating and seem to flow seamlessly with its beautiful animation and it almost seem like you are watching the action first-hand instead of through your television screen.
The only drawback in graphic design is in terms of the enemy soldiers which lack visual variety. This can be crucial as identifying the enemy will help determine the type of attack to use. But really, that is just a very minor flaw as compared to the stunning visual direction and camera angles that oftentimes allows you to see the action in an up-close detail.
There are also moments in the game where you're placed in the role of Kai who likes to shoot 'bad guys' using her crossbow. During the combat scene, you get to control and follow the trail of the arrow by tilting the sixaxis until they land into a soldier's body.
As for the sound, Heavenly Sword is superior to most games. The voice acting is superb with quality performances from actors who seem to fit their respective characters quite well. This could enhance the overall life-like quality of the game, and even the background music in all the combat scenes seem to blend together as a cohesive whole.
The Heavenly Sword is indeed a compelling adventure that will surely be able to live up to the hype surrounding its recent release. It is such a fun gaming adventure with top-notch intensity and excitement that its length (or lack thereof) could boil down to become its biggest drawback.
