Grand Theft Auto IV
The Grand Theft Auto series has proved to be one of the most popular videogame franchises in the world. Every title proves to be another major step for the franchise, and indeed, video gaming itself. The series lead the Sandbox genre without a doubt, and everybody knows why. GTA IV is the 9th installment in the series and is the fully blown sequel to the ground-breaking GTA III. The series has proved that with every new title they create a totally new experience, with GTA IV being no exception to this rule. The power of next-gen technology from the PlayStation 3 has meant that the critically renowned developers, Rockstar Games, have managed not just to meet the industry’s sky high expectations, but maybe to even surpass them!
The series has always stuck to its roots. That classic GTA feel is evident in all of the GTA games, and is what makes them so special. Still, Rockstar seems to improve every title again and again, making them fully-laden with a host of new features, techniques and everything fans could ask for. This skill is truly implemented into GTA IV.

GTA IV's story is told throughout the game by a lot of cut scenes, benefiting from the enhanced engine and next-gen technology, the cutscenes give a movie-like feel to the game and add a great deal to the experience. You’re in for a treat, not just in the improvement of technology, but in the content of the story itself...

Every GTA story has been, to an extent, immersive and hugely imaginative. GTA IV takes this that one step further. The story is focused on the embittered ex-soldier Niko. After immigrating to Liberty City to mainly escape his murky past, he is thrown into the murky morality of Liberty City. Niko’s appearance seems to ooze his overall character, one of a weary and hard-edged man, and this is what makes following his travels through Liberty City so entertaining. GTA IV shy’s away from the hyperactive extremities of past GTA characters; the story becomes more mature and immersive and affects the way you will actually play through the game. You may find yourself walking away from the classic GTA mindless rampages you can partake in the game, and play as if you were Niko and stay true to his character (not that you cant go on a mindless rampage from time to time if you see fit).

The game and its storyline is also enhanced hugely by the vast array of characters that make up the story in a way no previous GTA has seen. They seem to bolster the strength of the story and the way Niko acts; they prove to be a very interesting bunch. They provide the framework for the relationships you will gain in the game, making decisions you will encounter regularly, very agonizing and will always take a lot of thought. Choices will never be clear cut. The story of Niko, the wealth of characters and the murky morality of Liberty city are set to provide one of the most immersive, involving and REAL videogame stories to date.

The setting of GTA IV is of course Liberty City. To be completely honest, i dont think there has been anything more stunning in a videogame to date. You will have access to various islands and the city, everything has been rendered and polished to perfection. The texture and quality of every single object in the game is surely one of its greatest achievements, the sense and feeling that the world of GTA IV gives you is unique. Whether its driving under a steel bridge, and seeing the fading sunlight flicker off the bonnet of your car, to experiencing the magical rainfall Liberty City receives has such an effect on you, that you will be so immersed in the game, you'll never come out. It seems like each pixel conspires to create an unprecedented level of immersion, and to be transported into this world from your own living room, bedroom or games room, is truly a feat worty of recognition. Liberty City seems to represent the scale of GTA IV which in truth, is like no other game!

Aside from the creation Rockstar has achieved, Grand Theft Auto IV is, dont forget, a videogame. Many brand new elements, and improved ones, have been added into the game to make it just as much fun as its counterparts. Maybe one of the most enhanced features in GTA IV is the combat system. Rockstar wanted to add a new level of sophistication and excitement to their gun-fights, which will match any current-gen shooters. The combat system itself uses a lock-on feature which grabs on to the nearest threat and allows you to dispose of them in a quick and effective manner, you can also, of course, use free-aim. With the press of a button you can gain the freedom to shoot anything and everything, in blistering Hi-Def. A brand new feature, also, is the cover system. Pressing R1 will allow you to hug the nearest suitable object, providing you with invaluable cover and also another easy way to deal with multiple enemies with a lessened risk of injury or death. The combat provides a much appreciated new level of depth, and is definitely a step forward for the series.

GTA IV, also houses a new in-car combat system. Given a suite of new features, the in-car combat system is as sophisticated and effective as the on-foot combat system. Players now have the ability to lock on to the nearest target while in a car, and also the option to free-aim out of the window. In-Car combat is no longer the hectic headache it used to be. GTA IV sticks to one of the many huge advantages the series grips to, the combat.

The driving has again been tampered with, to ultimately give a much more cinematic feel. The camera angle in GTA IV follows the player through the streets of Liberty City with great effect. The camera angle is, however, one of the few things in-game that provide you with the occasional glitch. Going around certain corners and getting yourself in certain situations, prove to be too much for the camera on occasions and it will take a bit of effort to get it back on track. But, don't worry. This does only happen on occasions and is easily fixed, also there is a host of camera views you can alternatively switch too, which is a relief to some. The driving has been calmed down in a sense too, as now it takes a lot more skill and handling to navigate Liberty City effectively. Which again, adds to the REAL feel you get in this game. To swing round corners at high speed will take a lot more effort and skill to pull off, maybe the subtle approach will have to be used more, in missions especially. A big factor, GTA IV has greatly improved on is the vast array of highly-detailed vehicles that can be found on the streets. You sometimes have to remind yourself this is actually a game to go and steal a car. The overhaul may be controversial to some, but getting used to it proves to suit the game incredibly and furthermore adds to the experience.

A huge relief is, that GTA IV sticks to the traditional roots from its hugely successful predecessors. Giving you a whole new world to explore with plenty to investigate and test out, some of the best moments will undoubtedly appear outside of the Story, just like its previous titles. The GTA staple mark of creating carnage and panic everywhere you go is, if possible, more satisfying in this new addition. Exploring the intricate world of GTA IV, will also be an exciting task, as there is so much to explore and do outside of the story, that like previous GTA’s, you will be kept entertained way after the story has finished. The tool set the game provides you with gives you endless opportunities to entertain yourself, be it creating your own name with bullet holes on a car or gaining a six-star wanted level and evading the Army and police for as long as possible, the game provides you with everything you could dream of.

The openness of GTA IV's setting is incredible. You can, pretty much walk through most doors in the city to find out what’s on the other side. You can visit clubs, watch cabaret acts, play pool at a pool club or go bowling; it’s all there for you to mess with. Prepare yourself for the unprecedented level of freedom you will gain.

The mission structure of GTA IV is another major talking point. GTA IV does mainly stick to the winning formula of the previous GTA’s. You will still find yourself traversing the whole city, doing missions for various outrageous characters, all offering you a completely different experience than the other. The missions in GTA IV still are some of the most exciting and adrenaline-packed outings to-date. Playing through the story will be a huge amount of fun. But, as you should know by now, this is not all GTA IV has to offer. You will find yourself regularly being called off a main mission by various side-missions like going out with your cousin Roman or getting him out of trouble, to making sure you don’t miss a date with your girlfriend. The game immerses you like no other game into the life of Niko Bellic, not just the main storyline.

Upon your arrival in Liberty City you will be given Roman’s old phone. The phone is your control panel in the game. It serves as your organizer for everything. It’s where you receive missions, control your life as Niko, access the multiplayer features and generally run through the game. This feature is a new and inventive way to control the game and makes it so surprisingly easy and satisfying to live your second-life as Niko.

For the first time in a GTA game, GTA IV brings you online multiplayer. With up to sixteen players battling it out, GTA IV gives you yet another thing to shout about. With various unique and inventive game modes, GTA IV is set to steal the crown off the epic games of its time, such as Call of Duty 4 and Rainbow Six Vegas as the king of Multiplayer. GTA IV's online Game Modes include:

Free Mode – Up to 16 players can run around Liberty City, doing whatever they want. Invent your own game mode to enjoy such as work together to survive a six-star wanted level or hunt for Easter eggs, its all in your hands.

Team Mafia Work – Work in teams to complete various objectives given to you via your phone by the Mafia. The catch is you will be working to do these before the other teams.

Team Car Jack City – Work against other teams to steal various marked cars across the city, targeting other teams car’s and trying to get yours to the drop-off point with as less damage as possible.

Turf-War – Each team has to capture a given area and control it to earn points. Fight off other teams and capture other team’s turf to reign supreme.

Team Death match – Classic Team Death match. Kill as many of the other team as possible to earn points.

Cops ‘N’ Crooks – Two teams spawn as either Crooks or Cops. The Crooks have to get their selected crime boss to an escape point to flee the city, where as the cops work together to stop them escaping.

Hangman’s Noose – Co-Op mission type mode. You and up to 3 other players have to work together to complete a given mission.

GTA Race – The racing mode with a twist. Get through the various checkpoints however you want. Steal a Car and drive through them. Blow up every other player and walk through them, cause havoc for the other players for the fun of it. The world is at your feet.

Another interesting feature is the online lobbys in GTA IV. Instead of sitting, waiting and looking at a screen while the Host configures the game, you can battle it out and explore Liberty City in Party Mode until the Host is ready. This proves to be a LOT of fun!

The latest instalment in the GTA series provides us with a true video gaming blockbuster. Capitalizing and improving on everything the previous GTA’s had to offer makes this game a true classic. The host of new features, the storyline, Liberty City, everything Rockstar has done in GTA IV pushes this game to the forefront of video-gaming. This package will keep players enthralled for years to come. A video-game icon of this generation.

Grand Theft Auto 4 GTA4 Game Features

The Plot: Grand Theft Auto IV is a brand new Adventure in the GTA universe following the experiences of Nikolai ‘Niko’ Bellic, a new immigrant from an undisclosed Eastern European country whose troubled past and the persuasion of his cousin Roman have brought him to the fictional Liberty City. Niko is tricked into immigrating by Roman’s Rags-to-Riches story in a bid to use Niko’s known ‘tough guy’ attributes to save his debt-ridden life. As time goes on Niko comes into his own and starts to escape the role as Protector to Roman and becomes involved in the fight for the crime-ridden streets of Liberty City and later supremacy.

Game Environments: Based on several Boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey. Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been totally redesigned for GTA IV. Players can expect an unprecedented level of detail in every aspect of the City, more realistic pedestrians and NPC’s which all add to the realism this game provides.

Gameplay: Historically GTA games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for the player to progress through the game. In GTA IV, players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centered on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in a increased sense of realism, but a more free and unrestricted level of play.

Multiplayer: For the first time in a GTA game, online Multiplayer has been implemented into the game. Get ready for up to sixteen players battling it out on eight different game modes, such as, Cops ‘N’ Crooks, GTA race and Turf-Wars.

Parents Guide to Grand Theft Auto 4 GTA4 on PlayStation 3

Absolute Playstation3 is a family friendly website.

We pride ourselves on being as practical as possible when it comes to videogames that contain adult themes. We know much pressure they can put on us to buy them the 'cool' PS3 titles that 'everyone else' seems to be playing. Grand Theft Auto 4 GTA4 may be one of these.

While Grand Theft Auto 4 GTA4 on PlayStation3 is rated, we know that you may have very different standards when it comes to what is acceptable for your child.

While we play-tested Grand Theft Auto 4 GTA4 we noted the following information that parents may be interested in knowing before they decide if their children should play the Playstation3 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 GTA4.

The very name, Grand Theft Auto 4 denotes the use of crime to get through the game.

There is so much swearing during the game that after a while you stop hearing it.

You can pay for prostitutes and lap dancers, but none of this is shown in an explicit way.

This is not a game for young kids, the violence is intense, the sexual references happen more often than not, use of drugs and alcohol is extensive, the blood is realistic and sprays across the screen.

The game makers have succeeded in creating a very realistic world, which makes what goes on it it far more believable than previous versions of the game.

That said, there is little in this game that your children will not have seen already if they are allowed to watch TV after 10pm at night.

This is not intended to be a complete guide to all of the mature elements contained within the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 GTA4, only those that we found, however it should allow you to make a more informed choice.
