Full Auto 2
Review of Full Auto 2
There are several ways to play this game- a single player career mode, time trial, arcade, online play and offline head-to-head multiplayer. The Career mode puts you in the shoes of an undercover officer who has been recruited to take down the Ascendants, a ruthless gang who has taken over the city.
To do this you must compete in vehicular combat and take them down from within, one territory at a time. You are not completely alone- you get some assistance from SAGE, a computer, which will give you some tips before each race. SAGE can be a bit smartass though- a common phrase when you fail a mission is "Now how am I supposed to train a corpse?".
As you progress through the game more vehicles and weaponry will be unlocked. Head- to- Head is played in splitscreen with a choice of either racing or combat. Arcade lets you jump into a single racing using all the vehicles and weapons you have unlocked in Career mode. Online play lets up to 8 players get together for racing, as well as both single and team-based battle.
Each vehicle has stats for handling, speed and durability- some may be faster but do not have the armor to hold up to constant attack while others will hold up better but are not as fast. before each mission you choose a vehicle along with one primary and one secondary wapon. The decisions you make here wll help determine just how easy a time you have.
The controls of the game work well but you are limited to a choice of two configurations which basically is a choice of using the shoulder buttons or the regular buttons for weapons. For me having the gas and brakes worked better for me on the shoulder buttons and weaponry on the X and O buttons. I would have preferred to be able to map each one as I see fit.
On the screen you will see a number of items to show your condition- an energy guage, speed, position, lap counter, armor, etc. Energy is used by boosting and a feature called "unwreck"- if you smack into something you didn't want to you can hit a button to rewind time and have another go. The rewind time bit was first introduced to us in the Prince Of Persia games- it made sense then with the "sands of time". Now it is just another somewhat overdone feature as other games have tried to use the same basic idea.
The game looks good in the graphics department with a fair bit of detail in the cars and surroundings. Particle effects are put to good use with the destruction of vehicles and the surrounding area. There can be a lot of action happening at once with enemy cars coming from all sides but not once did I see any sort of slowdown. However, there was not alot that showed the power the PS3 seems capable of pushing.
Nothing overly special in the sound department- vehicles and weaponry all sound as one would expect. The only bit of voice acting in the game is SAGE and is nothing special. There is a good bit of music in the game but it tends to get drowned out for the most part by the in-game action. What I did hear sounded to be fairly generic.
