FUEL is a Sony PlayStation 3 Craft Racing game, written by Asobo Studio.

Guide to FUEL on the PlayStation 3

Fuel is Asobo Studios and Codemasters' joint effort to the sandbox racing genre that is raring to give track-based racing games a run for their money. Racing games such as Burnout Paradise set in an open-world environment are gaining popularity recently since it sets the stage for a more upbeat and intense kind of racing that lets you compete, not only with your opposing racers but, with Mother Nature as well. Fuel hopes to take the level of racing action on the PS3 up another notch by coming on- and off-road racing and taking it to the hilt.

Fuel is set during a time wherein most of the society has moved towards safer climates following a massive climate change that has destroyed majority of the landscapes. All that's left in the game world are adventurous racers competing against each other in a mad effort to win more fuel. The comprehensive map featured in Fuel expands up to a giant 5,000 square miles of terrain, depicting some of the Western US' famous landmarks. With a variety of terrain types to expect – from mountains, sand, deserts, ice, urban cities, dirt roads, alpine – expect a fierce race up ahead.

Majority of the races in Fuel are quite standard, consisting of an objective that requires you to get from point A to point B. But it is what you do in between that sets the game apart. Yes, you heard it right – it is what you do! Fuel is indeed designed in such a way that gamers have the freedom to explore their navigation of the game world and they are not constricted at all in following a certain path to get where you need to be, which is one of the beauty of the open-world environment. Since most checkpoints are spread quite far apart, there's plenty of room to experiment on your routes to reach your destination using shortcuts that could shave lots of time on your clock.

There's also some strategy involved in opting to navigate away from the traditional tracks in Fuel since you have to calculate the risks on your decision. Is taking the shortcut going to be detrimental to your progress knowing that you have no clear idea what's waiting for you up ahead? Or do you take the traditional path and risk being left in the dust? The latter is more evident in career races in Fuel wherein you are forced to take on the traditional approach to racing. But the free roaming mode is where all the fun and excitement awaits.

In terms of the difficulty level, Fuel features an arcade-style type of action that is quite accessible even for fans who are not used to playing sandbox racing. You can get so much fun trying to explore how you navigate your vehicle around the game's tough terrains. Most of your explorations, whether playing through the online or offline mode, are full of leisure. With Fuel though, you have no access to boost bonuses so gameplay weighs heavily on raw speed.

With racing games, the vehicle choices is one of the main focus. Fuel offers you up to 70-plus vehicles of varying classes to suit your kind of racing experience. Among your choices include motorcycles, quads, dune buggies, muscle cars, power cars, monster trucks, among others. The best part of all? Each choice of vehicle offers a different kind of racing experience; therefore, the game encourages you to make intelligent choices of which type of vehicle to use.

Fuel's GPS system is quite innovative too, signified by a series of red arrows overhead. But unlike any other GPS system employed by other racing titles, the GPS system for Fuel adapts to the kind of vehicle you are using and how you are driving them. For example, you have options for navigation when using a motorcycle that is not available when you are driving another type of vehicle, such as scaling hills.

In its commitment to provide a more user-central kind of experience with Fuel, the developers have incorporated user-created races into the picture. Since the game is set in an open-world environment, it was only fitting that gamers are not restricted to fixed events. If you're no longer happy with the kind of races that the game has tossed for you, then you can utilize the game's track editor to design your own race. Doing so wouldn't take more than 30 seconds and you certainly have full control over the elements included in the race. What's even better is that these user-created races in Fuel can be shared online for other gamers to use, if they desire.

Your ability to customize your racing options for Fuel does not end there. You can also change the weather effects or change the cycle of day, according to your own preference. Among your choices of weather effects include blizzards, thunderstorms, sandstorms, tornadoes, flood, and many more. Indeed, these weather effects can be quite extreme and it would definitely test how far you can go to win the race in Fuel. Sadly though, these effects are not applicable for all races but whenever they are used, it really does help provide a novel experience. As for the cycles, you can choose to play either on daytime or nighttime.

Fuel, thankfully, features quite a massive multiplayer experience for the hardcore racing gamer. If you decide to play locally, you can invite seven other friends in an eight-player multiplayer match. If you decide to go online, then Fuel's online multiplayer can support a total of 16 players.

If that's not enough incentive for you to explore more of your gaming opportunities in Fuel, then maybe medals would do it. You can win either gold, silver, or bronze medals depending on how well you did for each race. As for the in-game currency, you'll be able to score fuel bonuses by outracing your competitiors in Fuel.

The technical experience for Fuel hasn't been left out by Asobo though since the game's terrains, vehicles, and in-game action is quite impressive. Asobo claims that the game does not experience loading screens for a more fluid racing experience, but the frame rate does slow down a bit during big events. But that is too minimal to take anything away from the overall experience.

Although track-based racing games will continue to dominate, sandbox racing genre such as Fuel is increasing their supremacy in the gaming world. If you're the type of racer who likes to take the driver's seat and gain better control of your gameplay, then this one will certainly take your racing experience to a whole new arena.
