Guide to Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce on the PlayStation 3
Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is an unlikely console release, given that Koei's latest offering off the franchise is a port from the handheld. The series has reached the point wherein it has to either abandon it altogether or come up with something different that will pique interest in gamers once more. With a series of releases that seem to be mere carbon copies of each other, Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is scrambling to keep the franchise afloat. While most games off the series has been mostly focused on the single player experience, this one will be a much more different take that it cannot be categorized as “just another DW game”.
Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce builds up on the foundation previously laid out by the PSP version, and unlike what most would presume to be a mere cash-in on the triumph of the handheld release, there's more to expect here. The fact that Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce bears the name of the hit franchise, it incorporates some experimental elements, which the developers at Koei hopes will take the franchise in a more positive direction. While most of your old favorites are still present in the game, new features and mechanics are incorporated to make the action seem fresh even for those who've played the franchise for years.
As noted above, Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce lean more heavily on the multiplayer experience such that it becomes a focal point of the overall gameplay. There are four factions in the game and you'd be playing as a soldier in any of these factions. There is a unique story that each faction will follow, as well as different perspectives, to experience the game uniquely. These story and perspective will motivate you during completion of various missions in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce.
In conjunction with the need to introduce a major change on the game formula, Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is not your traditional Dynasty Warriors game. The game design has veered more towards something that looks more like the Monster Hunter game. And yet, the gameplay remains solidly fun and exciting, along with some enhancements specifically geared for the console. The controls in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce is one of the initial areas of improvement to consider, such that the controls are smoothly mapped out on the PS3 controller. In fact, those who've played the PSP version will notice that using the PS3 controls handle much better than the former.
To make things slightly different from previous games, the concept of a town hub was introduced into Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce for the PS3. Within the town, you will find several different locations such as a shop, armory, blacksmith, and a new fortune teller. You will spend most of your time in-between missions exploring this town and collect loot along the way. You can make a lot of use for these items, such as sell those you would not use or use them for crafting so you can improve your weapons in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce. Indeed, the game features an interesting resource system that is tied up with the crafting mechanism. You will have to generate a specific amount of resources before you can purchase items or special weapons to add to your inventory. You must also follow the same concept if you want to improve your town facilities and by upgrading them, you will enhance their size and stock. What works well with this system is the ability to earn a reward item for every mission you have cleared in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce.
The crafting system in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce gives you full control on how intense you'd like the action to be. You can equip it with Musou and Fury upgrades, which will utilize certain components or resources that you have collected throughout your various missions. You can gather them after your enemies have left them behind, discover them as you explore the town, or earned through a reward for completing primary or bonus objectives. The importance of crafting and managing your weapons is tied up with Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce's leveling system, which will determine how your skills and abilities grow, depending on your performance on a certain mission. Once you have leveled up, it will produce consequential effects to the gameplay as it improves your attack, defense, movement, and overall ability in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce. This is very important as you progress deeper since you will expect to find more difficult foes. The best thing about the PS3 version's loot and leveling system is that it is just as easy to pick up as the PSP version.
As for the missions themselves, it will work a bit differently on the PS3 version of Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce as it did with the PSP. Of course the biggest difference would be that you won't be taking on your missions solo, unless you have a wireless connection nearby, as the game supports ad-hoc play on the PSP. But with the PS3, you will be joined by three AI buddies (or 3 actual players online), and you will utilize an in-game menu to activate commands and actions in the game. As for the content of the missions in Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce, it is a mix of both new materials and some rehashed from the PSP version. But Koei is looking to enhance the content of the game post-launch as they've already promised to offer extra missions and other content for download after the actual game is launched.
In order to ensure that Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce will run efficiently all throughout, the online play has been limited to 4 players at a time. As for the multiplayer maps, they have been divided into bite-size chunks that are labeled in a numerical basis to make it easier for you to track them down. Since the maps are relatively small, your goals are clearly laid out and completing your mission won't last for more than 15 minutes, thus maintaining a likeable pace in the multiplayer game for Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce. Whatever experience points you have earned in your multiplayer journey is split up amongst the squad mates so each one could level up at the same time. Aside from the experience points that you can earn later on, you can also share items to help each other out through the mission.
Due to the difference in the platform, it is truly expected that the console version of Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce will get graphical makeover. The level of detail is exceptionally improved, which applies for the game environments and the character models. To combine with the game's consistent frame rate, you can revel in the death screams of your enemies as you finish them off with deadly combinations, which is always fulfilling for any action game, such as Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce.
Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce might introduce to the PS3 the gaming trademark of the franchise but it has offered a major leap for the franchise. If it proves to be a successful run, it wouldn't be unlikely to see more of the franchise in the console soon.
