Guide to Dragon Age 2 on the PlayStation 3
Bioware and Electronic Arts unveil the new edition into the Dragon Age series wherein this RPG franchise will see some improvements to take the core of the playing experience and bring it up another notch higher. Although Dragon Age 2 won't be released until March of 2011, the sequel to the popular franchise is already being talked about, especially for those who were able to watch the trailer and gameplay videos for the game.
In Dragon Age 2, gamers will be controlling the character of Hawke, which was also the same protagonist for the original game. Unlike Origins, gamers will not have the chance to change the character race but you can modify the class and gender for these characters. Hawke is a Lothering refugee with whom you will follow until he is able to rise to power. The setting used for this game is the same as the original, so gamers who had the chance to play Origins will find themselves in familiar grounds.
The story in Dragon Age 2 will revolve around its main character (Hawke) who survived the Blight and he will be working to achieve power throughout the story. The entire span of the story will extend up to a decade of events but players will be able to change the face of history and let the story evolve in whichever way you prefer. The best part about the story in this game is that whatever choices you made for the story in the original game will be reflected in this game's story, so there is a sense of continuity.
Aside from Hawke, you will also encounter several characters in Dragon Age 2. You will also meet Hawke's siblings Bethany and Carver, a chantry seeker named Cassandra who develops an interest in Hawke, Varric the narrator (which is also a dwarf), and Wesley who is an injured Templar that Hawke will meet once he flees from Lothering. Flemeth, who is a notorious witch that appeared in Origins will also reprise her role for this game.
Hawke will be meeting a lot of creatures in Dragon Age 2 with whom he'd be battling up against with as he rises to power. One of the most notable creatures there are in this game are known as Striders. They are giant creatures that have four massive legs and use poison to defeat their enemies or other organisms. The Striders were created by Elven gods and are meant to act as ancient guardians that protect their people. These creatures did not appear in the Origins and the expansion pack, but were made available in the Witch Hunt DLC.
Other creatures such as the Qunari, elves, and dwarves also receive some redesign for Dragon Age 2. You will also be able to follow an improved narrative style and dialogue system in this game that utilize a similar dialogue wheel that is used in the Mass Effect series. Unlike the previous game, this “wheel” will also indicate not just the dialogue being spoken by the character, but also how they feel at that moment, to give a clearer idea about how characters interact with one another. Bioware has done an excellent job with Dragon Age 2 such that you can truly experience a cinematic gameplay, which is vital with such a complex storyline and a non-linear framed narrative story that offers enough freedom for gamers to explore their own path.
The development process for Dragon Age 2 took a huge turn such that Electronic Arts can publish another compelling game, which is vital given the success of the original release. According to Greg Zeschuk of Bioware, it was a conscious effort on the development team's part to offer an enhanced graphic engine in the development of this game to pump it up, so to speak. The use of a renewed engine was easily evident given the super hot visuals employed in this game that effectively transports gamers into the world of Dragon Age. The improve graphics are highly evident in the combat system for a truly immersive experience.
The control system in Dragon Age 2 was also revised such that it feels more responsive now than ever. It is designed to adjust to the strengths of the control pad such that it feels more natural now to try and use the controller to have the characters do as you want them to.
There are still a few more months to go before Dragon Age 2's scheduled release date of March 2011. You can expect BioWare to use those remaining months to sharpen up key areas of the game to deliver a complete RPG experience. Once that time comes, be prepared to hold onto your controller for a while for this is going to be an absorbing title.
