Guide to Demons Souls on the PlayStation 3
Demon’s Souls has been exclusive for the PS3 in Asia for a while now and Western gamers are finally getting their first date with this dark fairy tale game as it heads out onto Sony’s next-gen console. This has been a long-time plan for Atlus and is finally coming through, which is a pleasant treat given that challenging games have turned into a rare commodity with majority of gamers opting for the casual “pick up and go” titles. Its visual style, flexible gameplay, freakish creatures, and often times frustratingly difficult play are the main drawing points of Demon’s Souls on the PS3.
At its core, Demon’s Souls is a single player role playing game that is comparably more difficult than most RPGs you’ll encounter today. The game is developed by From Software which, like the franchise itself, represents the extremes when it comes to brutal action gaming. With a universe filled with a handful of demons, Demon’s Souls will let you experience the most haunting and equally exciting 80 hours of your gaming lifetime yet.
In Demon’s Souls, you will be playing as one of the adventurers who finds himself trapped in a hub known only as Nexus. This hub is situated within a larger kingdom known as Boletaria and is visually styled so as to exude despair, darkness, and hopelessness, particularly for the people trapped inside it. As demons and other freaky creatures are set on plundering this kingdom, you need to find a way to defeat these demons and get out of there alive. That is your mission while playing Demon’s Souls. But as with a type of game such as this, you do suspect that it is going to be a lot easier said than done.
Before entering the game proper, you will begin with a tutorial stage in Demon’s Souls. At this point, you get a general walkthrough of how to go about in the game, while teaching you the basic skill you need to learn to overcome your enemies. It creates the impression that you can simply ease your way through Demon’s Souls but don’t be deceived - the difficulty shock will soon sink in as you are tossed into the game world.
You will be given 13 character classes to choose from in Demon’s Souls with one notable addition: Royalty. This is a unique class showcasing more difficult combat and a playthrough of its own. The character creation ability offers several customization tools that you can use to make your own character as unique as possible. Your character is the central aspect of your adventure through five game worlds available in Demon’s Souls, which is then divided into four distinct sections. Be warned as you go exploring any of these worlds because there are monsters waiting to prey on you.
Speaking of the demons, they are present in an ever wide range to make life more difficult for you in Demon’s Souls. They include human soldiers, scimitar-wielding skeletons, octopus-headed guards, flame-creatures, and even Death is waiting to face up with you. Good thing that Demon’s Souls come with an effective hack-and-slash type of combat that incorporates some of the best tools you will ever need – tools that are crucial for your survival. You can access your inventory of weapons and skills that you need to build up over time via the central hub. It is also in the central hub of Nexus wherein you can access upgrades for those skills and weapons, enabling you to keep up with the intense monstrosities out there to haunt you.
But more than just brutal action and lots of blood spattering, there is also a need to approach Demon’s Souls in a tactical manner. It all lies in your ability to use the weapons and skills available to you in order to better manage your enemies, and avoiding death as you go along. These weapons and equipments available in your inventory enable you to perform different activities related to your progress in Demon’s Souls such as completing levels, finding treasure, killing demons, and gathering the souls of the demons to earn enough so you can buy upgrades in the form of increased health, more magic power, strength, and other life saving equipments.
If you cannot scavenge weapons in Demon's Souls, you can buy them and whatever you use during combat all depends on the kind of approach you want to use. If you want to parry with enemies before stabbing them, you must use a sword and shield. If you want to roll and dart before taking your enemy down in a gory manner, then opt for the dagger and light armor. Or, if you want to take out your enemies' life in an instant without having to get close, you can use the bow from a distant. But you need to be extremely careful each step of the way in Demon's Souls since each misstep will mean you have to go back to the very start. If that's not bad enough, you will also lose all the souls you have gathered after defeating your enemies. So you have to start from zero and defeat the boss monster to regain whatever you have previously collected.
Although the emphasis with Demon's Souls is in the single player, the multiplayer feature offers more excitement. You can do this by going online and summoning other players into your game. As you navigate the game world, you will encounter soul sign left by fellow gamers playing online and by responding to it, you can bring that person into the game so you can play together. The cooperative play in Demon's Souls provide support for up to three players but you cannot choose whom to play with. And since you do not personally who these players are, it still reinforces the single player experience but at the same time encourages teamwork among gamers to complete the missions ahead.
The controls for Demon's Souls was not entirely novel and all it needed was for you to properly time your blows in order to effectively kill enemies. From Software were able to successfully recreate the vision and dark theme of the game through the design of the game world. As a matter of fact, the visual design has been able to reproduce the sense of fear and gore. The music, on the other hand, plays quite an interesting role. You will not usually encounter music as you explore the game except for the thundering sound you will hear while battling the boss monster. However, the level of silence showcased in the game contributes to the general atmosphere in Demon's Souls.
Demon's Souls is certainly not your average game and some critics have even dubbed it as one of the most difficult video games in existence. It refuses to make a concession with your happiness, satisfaction, nor your mental well being. But it isn't everyday that you get to experience a game that challenges you while providing enough thrill to stay glued on your PS3.
