Guide to Dead Space on the PlayStation 3
Dead Space is a new franchise in the survival horror genre but is still able to hold its ground. Creating a horror game that works was a tough challenge for EA Redwood Shore because there must be a nice blend of gameplay mechanics, a gripping story, and impressive technical features to enhance the overall feel of the game. However, DeadSpace is able to deliver those aspects of a game that is credited for making it thrive as a game.
The story of Dead Space is set a hundred years into the future and at a time wherein the world is in a catastrophic state. During this time, mankind has managed to use up all of Earth's resources. In this advanced stage in history, mankind has also mastered space travel and so planet cracking was a solution to combat this dire condition of the planet. A maintenance crew is dispatched to Ishimura on a craft, where you will be immersed into the character of Isaac Clarke.
Ishimura is a crippled vessel where Isaac and the rest of his crew must head on over to save a few of his friends who survived the shipwreck. This is where hell will start to break loose in DeadSpace as monstrous creatures known as Necromorphs have infested the ship. Isaac and his crew, as well as all survivors of the ship, must have to deal with these villanous creatures in Dead Space if they wish to survive another day.
Isaac in Dead Space isn't your typical hero. Although he is equipped with the knowledge as a systems engineer, he lacks powerful weapons that will enable him to fight off the Necromorphs with ease. This in fact makes DeadSpace real exciting and challenging. As soon as he steps into Ishimura, Isaac does not carry a load of firearms nor grenades, and he does not have special combat training. He finds a weapon at the start though but he eventually makes use of any items or weaponry he picks along the game.
Thanks to his engineering skills, he'd be able to assemble useful weapons and make them more powerful by incorporating them with items he finds in the game. Meanwhile, the only true weapon he has in Dead Space is the security pulse rifle. The power nodes will enable him to upgrade weapons, so he can boost the weapon capacity to make reloading a lot quicker, or increase the damage they bring to the enemies.
During his exploration of Ishimura, Isaac will be wearing a space suit which he will be able to strengthen as he continue to progress in the game. What sets the combat in DeadSpace apart from any other survival horror game is that players lack the ability to max out their weaponry. Therefore, you'd have to make a crucial decision on which weapons to bring that you will find most useful in your quest within the ship. The weapon you choose will serve as your specialization during your quests in Dead Space.
Be careful in making your choice as Necromorphs are able to hold up pretty well against most weapons. The key to defeating these creatures is "strategic dismemberment". By using this strategy against your enemies in Dead Space, you'd eventually weaken them until you can kill them. Choosing the right weapon in DeadSpace, therefore means either life or death for you.
To keep combat more exciting, Isaac has his own ancillary abilities in Dead Space: the stasis field and telekinetic kinesis module. The stasis module slows down your enemies so you can have enough time to escape or land a serious attack while they can't fight back. The kinesis module, on the other hand, proves helpful especially towards the end of the game. You can hurl objects at enemies with immense power whenever you run out of ammunition, and still be able to beat them up effectively.
Isaac has savage melee attacks including the powerful stomp or swipe. By swinging weapons or objects in a powerful arc towards enemies, he'd be able to save up on his ammunition during times wherein they are needed most.
You will also get a locator in DeadSpace, which is an essential tool for pointing you towards your next set of objectives. It saves time as you can activate it with just a press of the button and you can proceed with your task.
In a survival horror game, tension is of utmost importance. The use of an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective in Dead Space certainly delivers the right amount of tension. It offers you enough vision of your surroundings, but is still quite limited within your line of vision. Therefore, you need to stay vigilant at all times, especially since DeadSpace lacks a quick turnaround command.
This limited, third-person view is reinforced by the wearing of suit, which can be claustrophobic at times. Some gamers might find it disadvantageous on their part, but this was a conscious design choice for developers as it heightens the level of tension already present. There is always the feeling of fear and danger that someone could readily strike you from behind.
The atmosphere in Dead Space is another major contributor to the level of horror and danger. Aside from having one of the best written scripts in any survival horror game, DeadSpace does not offer mere cheap scare. Moreover, everything that Isaac does is done in real time.
The health of Isaac is projected on his back, while you get a holographic view of his ammunition right on top of his gun. You can also view his inventory via a hologram. Therefore, all action in Dead Space takes place right in front of Isaac, making it feel like you are really immersed into the game's virtual world.
The level of detail and gore present in Dead Space is one of the most impressive aspects of this game. Even Isaac's suit is well designed and highly detailed, especially when you get the chance to upgrade your suit and weapons. The Necromorphs are also well depicted, which enhances the “fear factor” that infuses excitement in this game and their features only get worse and scarier as you proceed further.
What makes the stunning visuals work really well for DeadSpace is the excellent voice-overs. Plus, the musical scoring and sound heightens the level of shock that will cause players to shiver down their spine. Dead Space is certainly one survival horror game that will transport you to roughly 15 hours of gory and gruesome action that is ironically satisfying!
