Guide to Darksiders on the PlayStation 3
Darksiders delivers the freshest taste for action-adventure for the PS3 gamers, courtesy of THQ and Vigil Games. When it comes to this genre, several franchises have come and gone but rarely has a supremacy been established. During these desperate times wherein the number of games that are able to deliver genuine yet heart-stopping action-adventure games fall short, Darksiders is willing to fill the spot and with Vigil Games on the helm, this one cannot be easily dismissed aside.
Although you will often find a lot of action-adventure games that are set before time, not many are able to incorporate different creatures such as angels, demons, and other undead creatures into one explosive offering such as Darksiders have done for the PS3. With the modern metropolis serving as the backdrop of action, you will be treated to unrelenting action and a variety of gameplay choices to ensure that it never gets boring. If you have seen the concept and the story for Darksiders, one is quick to realize that it is not the most original idea. However, it had managed to keep the gamers' interest from start to finish.
Those who are new to Darksiders will have a lot to cover, especially story-wise. You will be immersing in the role of the lead character, named War, who is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War is serving for the Charred Council, which governs the power between Heaven and Hell. When War was summoned to Earth, he mysteriously starts Armageddon and was asked to answer for the crimes he committed during annihilation of mankind. It was eventually unraveled that The Destroyer tricked War into staging the Apocalypse and this is where War's adventure kicks off in Darksiders. For majority of your playthrough, you will be contending with the demonic forces of The Destroyer and other types of enemies that will get in the way of your main objective in Darksiders.
The Watcher will accompany you throughout all missions and objectives in Darksiders, who is a useful companion that makes accomplishment of your missions much easier. He is able to point out clues to your next objective and hint on the intel, which are weak points for your boss enemies that you need to take advantage of during your encounter with them. Along the way, you will also meet Vulgrim. Vulgrim is an enterprising demon with whom the council has struck a deal with that enables you to purchase items you can use throughout your adventure in Darksiders. These items range between abilities, weapons, combos, and other valuable items you need to progress in the game.
With several assortment in the gameplay characteristics for Darksiders, you are sure to enjoy every aspect of the campaign experience. There is enough depth in the combat for this game from start to finish. At the core of the gameplay for Darksiders is the concept of Wrath Core. These are basically energy that you can find throughout the game that you must collect and store. You can boost your Wrath Core by collecting the souls of your enemies when you kill them, destroy objects, or unlock hidden objects. Once the Wrath Core is full, it will unlock special abilities and power that you can use in Darksiders combat. You can unlock the Blade Geyser that equips War with a ring of deadly and giant blades that quickly damages enemies that try to even get close to him. The Stoneskin turns War into a stone such that he can boost his defense and become more potent in offense. The Immolation sets War on fire and wreaks havoc to all that surround him. And finally, the Affliction enables War to release poison that easily debilitates his opponents in Darksiders.
But even without these special abilities and super power, War can easily handle himself against multiple enemies in Darksiders. He's got a huge arsenal of weapons suited for all enemy types. By the end of the day, he would have gotten some of his most powerful weapons including the Crossblade, Tremor Gauntlet, Earthcaller, Mercy, and the Abyssal Chain. The Chaoseater is the first weapon that you will get in Darksiders, which is an oversized sword that slices your enemies quite easily. As you continue to use it, it will also level up and cause more damage along the way. On top of having several weapons to choose from, you can also get weapon enhancements for the game. There are a total of 12 weapon enhancements to collect: 8 regular and 4 “Legendary” enhancements.
Since War is a character built for tough combat, he himself is equipped with unique abilities that will serve him well throughout his missions in Darksiders. His ability Mask of Shadows enable him to see through hidden items and the more he could discover, the more upgrades and wrath boost he could get. Meanwhile, his Voidwalker ability enables him to walk through portals in the game.
On top of the weapon enhancements, item upgrades are also available in Darksiders. Once you have collected enough souls in the game, you can trade them for in-game currency that you will later on use for purchasing upgrades. The need to consistently level up your game is vital with the variety of enemies and bosses that you'd eventually have to face once you get deep enough into the game. With Joe Mad at the helm of developing Darksiders, you can find an impressive list of enemies and boss characters. You can therefore expect to go up against various enemies such as angels, zombies, imps, demonic creatures, monsters, armour-wearing skeletons, spewing golems, to name a few. The Jailer has got to be one of the more interesting mini-bosses in the game, which is grotesque mutant zombie. Although a slow-moving behemoth, The Jailer can set its prisoners to attack you and his ability to swing a cage can inflict a great deal of damage.
Aside from the intense combat, the platforming and puzzle elements of Darksiders are just as worthy of checking out and playing. This will serve as a great breather from the intense combat. First off, the game's platforming is quite simple and is free of any complications that will inhibit your progress, which offers a nice sidetrack from battling with tough enemies. Meanwhile, the puzzle aspect of Darksiders is challenging enough but not that difficult so as to frustrate you.
Darksiders has managed to create a perfect balance between formidable gameplay and successful technical details. On the visual side, the artistic style makes this game really suitable for Sony's next-gen console. Even the gruesome undead creatures are shockingly stunning and the decayed beauty of the game environment comes to life on-screen. Needless to say, the Creative team directed by Joe Mad has done an excellent job at this department. The best thing about playing Darksiders on the PS3 is that it does not suffer from framerate problems at all, which has been noticed in other platform versions. Moving over to the audio side of the technical department, Mark Hamill renders his voice to the main character. He, and the rest of the actors, did a superb job with the voice acting, which helps to make up the not-so-impressive scoring in the game.
With an exquisite combat and a gripping storyline, Darksiders is surely one of the titles that must be included in your must-buy list for the early part of 2010.
