Guide to Dantes Inferno on the PlayStation 3

Dante's Inferno received a multitude of comparisons when its initial build was showcased to the public. Some critics pegged it as a cross between Dead Space and God of War, but EA's infernal epic is raring to create its own distinction since comparisons barely do anything to give justice as to the real capability of this IP. The folks at EA are confident that Dante's Inferno will unleash the wrath of hell when it makes its way onto the PS3 to produce action that is nothing like you've seen before.

EA has taken all the bashing their upcoming franchise has received in stride given that most of it was warranted. But Dante's Inferno seem to be the company's response to all critics who believed that they've, sports games aside, delivered mere quantity but lacking in quality for the titles under their helm. Dante's Inferno appears to be strong in all department – storyline, gameplay, and technicals. But with a distinctive overall theme, which applies on both story and gameplay, that focus on either to punish or absolve, there's bound to be a lot of twists and unique action to unfold.

Dante's Inferno is based on Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, which is one of the most influential and popular poems to be made during the time of medieval age. With its lofty ideas concerning the nature of heaven and hell, the poem was considered groundbreaking for medieval literature for its use of lowbrow medium since Dante Alighieri was also one of the strong proponents of using native tongue in writing. While the story used for Dante's Inferno is an abbreviated version of the original poem it has managed to retain the rich literary and religious references evident in the original. The plot for Dante's Inferno also facilitates in the surge of hellish creatures so that gameplay never gets tedious at any point.

The adherence to the poem for Dante's Inferno is not limited to the plot, but also extends to the characters. If you've read the poem, you'll find familiar names such as King Minos, Phlegyas, and Charon appear and pretty much retaining their characters as you knew them from the poem. But to make the gaming experience for Dante's Inferno unique from that of the poem, the developers opted to deviate in going deep into Dante's dark past, often adding layers to the story. After all, it is an action game, hence drama is important to produce conflict and deliver excitement to the action. Instead of the joining a pilgrimage to find Beatrice, Dante's Inferno's plot has been turned into a rescue mission to save Beatrice from being bound to the clutches of hell. Lucifer is also a much darker antagonist and the story stems out from there.

At the center of the action in Dante's Inferno is the Righteousness system. It will serve as your morality meter in the game, but is unique in that it is implemented into the action for a major twist. Playing as Dante, you will be given a choice to punish or absolve the damned and minions of Hell. Each choice will have moral implications and is manifested in your gameplay. When you absolve often, your Holy bar in Dante's Inferno will gradually increase until you level up to the Holy path. The same goes with the Unholy path if you pick the other choice. You can either speed up or slow down the levelling up process for each path, depending on whether you choose one path often or you toss each one up from time to time.

Another crucial factor, aside from the storyline and characters, that is key in eliciting the same atmosphere that the original poem has are the environments featured in Dante's Inferno. Although the developers tried their best to remain faithful to the poem, there are re-constructed sections to recreate this tormented and somewhat twisted world. For the most part though, it is pretty accurate and a direct visualization of what Dante's Inferno was supposed to be like, basing on Alighieri's imagination.

Dante's Inferno is obviously a violent, third-person action title that delivers such intense action that could easily compete with that of Kratos. Dante will be wielding a scythe as his main weapon, which is able to execute low or high attacks. This weapon is just one of many others that Dante could gain access to in the game, which is perfect for powerful finishing moves. For the low attack in Dante's Inferno using his scythe, it is characterized by speed and precision. Meanwhile, long attacks are slower but is capable of inflicting much damage. There are even concepts of 'righteous' finishes during combat, which will open up only depending on what is reflected on the righteousness system.

You can even take that lightning-flinging action in Dante's Inferno another notch higher by earning rewards in the form of extra abilities and exclusive magic attacks. You can find unique relics through the game, which can either be categorized as Holy or Unholy. The effectiveness of these relics rely on how you are playing the game. If you are playing a righteous path, then you will certainly make the most out of holy pick-ups along the way. Dante's Inferno also has enough room for combos that become increasingly ludicrous yet still very effective as you progress deeper. If you are able to effectively combine it with the cross-stuns, then the combat system in Dante's Inferno enables you to manage hordes of enemies efficiently, whether on normal or hard difficulty.

Boss battles in Dante's Inferno are a bit standard and straightforward, which will pit you up against a boss enemy until you defeat them. But there is an interesting twist to this that the developers are hoping will fuel the player's desire to beat out an enemy – the ability to tame that beast and use it to your advantage later on. You're not going to use these beasts throughout your adventure in Dante's Inferno- most of them are utilized only to help you with specific in-game tasks, such as breaking down something or solving puzzles.

Technically speaking, Dante's Inferno looks, feels, and plays smoothly. Visually, it is breathtaking with its used of vivid and blatant imagery that often shocks but never fails to satisfy. Originality is a bit questionable though but with this concept, it is hard to tinker any more, so you'll just have to be happy that Dante's Inferno appropriates the mood for the game quite well. Meanwhile, the development team has committed itself to ensuring that the game runs at a consistent 60 frames/ second frame rate. Another noteworthy technical feature is the sound effects, which makes up for a musical score that is not up to par. The experience of listening to the haunting screams of sinners in Hell creates a hair-raising experience. Meanwhile, the developers for Dante's Inferno did an excellent job of hiring British voice actors to render it authenticity.

Dante's Inferno already has a quality source material to draw inspiration from, which cuts the the work for developers in half. But the concept of free will and the blatant level of violent action has conspired to enhance your playing style options, making this one of the most unique PS3 title to come out this year.
