Guide to Catherine on the PlayStation 3
Catherine is a new game set for release on the PS3 this year. It is hard to define this game, especially since it combines features of one genre and then integrate it with the features of another genre. However, the simplest way to describe this game is an adventure game with elements of puzzle and dating simulation.
The game publisher, Atlus, describes the game as a cross between Heavy Rain and Q*Bert. It is worth noting though that the team working on Catherine for the PS3 are the same folks who worked on Persona, which is another popular RPG series that was exclusive to the PlayStation consoles. Thus, this is a unique game in terms of both the gameplay and the development team working on producing this massive title.
Catherine is Atlus' response to criticism that they prefer to localize their game, which means that they could not support a game suited for the Western market. However, this game will prove their critics wrong because this zany game might just be the next big thing in the West. In this game, players will take control of the character of Vince who meets this girl, who represents the titular role of Catherine. The problem is Vincent is together with Katherine and they are about to wed soon. Now, Vincent turns to his friends for advice on how to deal with his current situation.
The entire game is therefore focused on the main protagonist choosing between these two women in his life. Each choice you make along the way will impact the ending. However, it should be fun to witness how the story develops from there and how you handle the “good/evil” choices along the way. The fact that you have different choices to make along the way, Catherine therefore has a high replay value and you can play it several times without going through the same scenario again.
There are several different play styles available for Catherine. There are also several anime-like cutscenes featured in the game to help the story progress and provide some background on the events that have transpired. All character interactions are set in the third person. Aside from the adventure-like challenges that you will have to go through in this game, there are also several puzzle elements featured in this game. Vincent will have to complete numerous puzzle sequences that have significance to the events in the story. For instance, there is one puzzle wherein Vincent has to climb up a tower in an effort to manipulate the square-shaped blocks until you are able to complete the puzzle. Some of these puzzles are timed, as well. Needless to say, this game is notorious for being quite challenging.
Catherine for the PS3 also features different stages that are based on major blocks, which is a nice feature as the camera can be titled to provide you with a wider perspective of the game environment. Even if the puzzles and platforming elements of this game can prove to be a challenge, it is thankfully equipped with smooth controls. Everything feels tight and well done. However, you can't expect an action game as this is more of an action puzzle. You will really get your brains worked up with this game.
This game is quite meaty – not too long and not too short. It is just the right length of playing time to be able to explore the wonderful plot and at the same time explore the various puzzles featured in this game. The plot spans for about 80 days and nights, wherein each day features between 5 to 8 stages each. An arcade game entitled Rapunzel is available for you to play in the game. This is the same bar which Vincent frequent during the time when he is confused with the two women in his life. This section will add around 64 more stages to the game. There are also plenty of trophies to try and get, which should keep you busy for a long time.
The music of Catherine is another notable feature in this game. The musical scoring helps to bring the characters and action to life, while the voice acting is superb! It is a refreshing mix of music and there is probably none in a while that has nailed the music department this good. But the most important feature about this upcoming PS3 title is that the concept is fresh. It is a rehashed first-person shooter that also incorporates puzzle and platforming. Hence, it is quite difficult to pinpoint its genre. One thing is for sure though, Catherine is due for release in late July 2011.
Catherine Game Features
The Horrors of Love-Vincent's waking fears, doubts, pressures, and growing guilt about commitment and fidelity now gleefully follow him into his dreams, manifesting as horribly disfigured monsters and a ticking clock.
Between a Rock and a Soft Place-The player must navigate Vincent through heavy moral decisions. As in real life, hardly anything is black and white. What is the value of honesty? What is the right thing to do? Either way, someone's going to get hurt. Worse yet, someone could die.
The Nightmare of Your Dreams-Under the watch of producer Katsura Hashino, acclaimed director of Persona 3 and Persona 4, famed character artist Shigenori Soejima and master composer Shoji Meguro create sights and sounds unlike anything else. As unforgettable and original as the game's narrative, Catherine's visual direction and musical score define and perfectly complement Vincent's terrifying ascent into the dizzying perils of love.
