Guide to Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 on the PlayStation 3
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is extremely hyped up such that the folks at Activision would even go to as far as claiming this game to be one of the best titles ever released in this decade. If you have played its predecessor, then you might have an idea of what to expect given that it is a direct sequel of the game. With Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, you can expect a game that moves at a rapid pace with a lot of its signature combat elements such as massive gunplay, smooth framerate, breathtaking visuals, and a hefty multiplayer feature.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is set 5 years since the original game of the series and from there the plot has the tendency to overarch at some point during the entire gameplay. It follows the story of Vladimir Makarov's plot to avenge the death of Imran Zakhaev, such that the former devises a more evil and remorseless terrorist plan. But the most interesting aspect about this revenge tale in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is that you can experience it via multiple perspectives. It will then follow a team of special forces in an effort to take down the mastermind who has engineered all of the terrorist attacks that has happened in the airport at the start of this game. The majority of your time will be spent on controlling Seargent “Roach” Sanderson, although you can also switch onto controlling some other characters as you navigate various locations such as Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, Washington DC, and Virginia to fulfill your mission.
The solo campaign in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is packed but short, wherein gameplay could last only for approximately eight hours max. Hence, there is a sense of urgency for veteran gamers to move past this phase and look forward to what the multiplayer aspect has to offer. But more on that later, since there are also a few interesting points to consider in the solo campaign for this game. For once, you can switch from one character to another as you change levels as the narrative unfolds along with your journey in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. The ability to jump from one soldier to another is a staple of the franchise although much is left to be said about its ability to establish an attachment to the story. You will then move onto your team's journey in an effort to stop a terrorist war that is hinting to expand on a global scale.
The general feel of combat for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 can be attributed mainly to the tight controls, which is intuitive and really adds a lot of punch into the combat experience. The amount of variation to combat through each level is also a welcome treat for fans. At one level, you are focused on stealth play, in another you need to run against your enemies like hell to unleash fury. While you stumble upon moments in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 wherein you couldn't quite figure out what your goal is, but that is part of the challenge of this game.
The Special Ops Mode takes on a lot of focus and attention in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which is highly talked about leading up to its release. This will be the newest addition into the game's main menu, alongside single player and competitive multiplayer. In this mode, you can embark on 25 different scenarios which you can play along with a friend or two, either locally or online. You will be given a set of missions for each scenario and be given access to various types of weapons you normally would be able to use in the proper game. There are certain types of enemies and weapons though that are exclusive only to Special Ops Mode in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which gives you another reason to spend a bit of your gameplay time in this mode. So, if you are looking for variety, this is surely what you are getting. As you successfully move onto the story mode, you can also unlock more co-op missions that provides additional motivation to complete the single player campaign.
The multiplayer has always been one of the franchise's strongest points and with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, the developers wanted to use the features already available as a launching pad and incorporate more refinements to increase replay value. You can now get your hands on better customization options, increased choices of perks, new weapons and attachments, and a full complement of competitive modes. But the biggest improvement with the multiplayer for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is the addition of up to 23 two-player and cooperative missions. You can enter these missions through local or online multiplayer. With such a powerful and massive game, it would really make a whole lot of sense to tap a friend along for the ride.
The Perks offer one of the biggest enhancements to the multiplayer game in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 since they are now upgradeable. For example, with the Sleight of Hand perk, it speeds up your ability to load weapons. And the more kills you are able to generate using this particular perk, you will be able to easily upgrade it such that you reach Sleight of Hand Pro. With this particular perk, you are able to switch down or adjust your scope a lot faster for better aiming ability.
The Killstreaks system in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 also got a handful of enhancements such as the addition of bonus killstreaks such as the AC-130. The entire system has now been expanded such that you can get new rewards and you have control over the order at which these rewards are unlocked. For example, you can earn the UAV bonus once you have made three kills, you can get the missile strike at five kills, and the chopper support after making seven kills. In addition to that, you can also get Care Packages in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. The content of the package though is a bit random such that it can be additional ammo, a killstreak reward, or something else. You have to prevent the enemies from stealing the Care Packages though since they can utilize it on their own as well, thus availing of the goodies that would have been yours.
On the other end of the spectrum, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 also showcases deathsteaks wherein you can get rewards after being killed in combat for several times in succession. In some cases, these bonuses are conferred in at least three deaths in a row. Few examples include copycat and painkiller, with copycat enabling you to steal weapons from your killer even if you have not unlocked them while painkiller gives your health a boost soon after respawning.
For more drama and to get a closer look into intense combat action, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has introduced the Winning Kill camera perspective during deathmatches. After each multiplayer match, every member of the teams are treated to a slow-mo action that lets you focus in on the final kill that takes the final breath off your opponents. Another invaluable tool during multiplayer are the call signs, which are basically sign posts to your foes that indicate how well you've done so far in the game. You can unlock this along with unlocking achievements or using the riot shield constantly.
When it comes to the game's graphics, Infinity Ward does nothing to reinvent the wheel although Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has undeniably refined graphics and framerate. From the bloodspatter on the screen, to the fog build up in the atmosphere during explosive combats, and the tangible world where all the action is set – this game has successfully brought that intense action to life. The low, pulsating tune that is played on the background also does help to complement the action. Plus, the voice actors have done a commendable job at providing excellent voiceworks to the characters in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
Call Activision brave for claiming how big Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is, but the great thing about them and with the help of the talented development team in Infinity Ward is that they have successfully backed up all their marketing hype. This game is worthy every single penny you shell out once it hits retail shelves.
