An Easy to Understand Guide to Blu Ray on the PlayStation 3
Sony was so convinced that the success of the PS3 console relied on Blu Ray (pronounced Blue Ray), that they delayed its launch.
So what is Blu-Ray, and could it change gaming forever ?
The following guide has been written in clear English and is for non technical people.
When the original PlayStation (PSone) was launched it had a CD drive in it. This allowed people to play their music CD’s on it. At the time a good CD player cost nearly as much as the game console, so it was a great feature to have.
When the PlayStation 2 (PS2) was launched, it had a DVD drive in it. This allowed people to play their own DVD movies and Music CD’s on it. By this time music CD players were very cheap, but almost no one had a DVD player, as they cost almost as much as the console and the price of the movies was ridiculous.
When the PlayStation3 was launched it had a Blu Ray drive in it. This will allow people to play high definition movies, DVD movies and music CD’s. Music CD players are fast becoming obsolete (thanks to mp3 players eg the ipod) and DVD players now only cost about twice the price of a new movie, but virtually no one has a high definition movie player and they cost about the same price as the console.
Starting to see a trend here ?
The first time you see a high definition movie playing on a true high definition television, your mouth will open and the first word you speak will be "wow".
How we watch movies has changed forever !
Imagine watching a movie where you can see the individual hairs on the actors arms, see the fibers in the material of the clothes they are wearing, every wrinkle on actors faces and being able to tell what they have just eaten, by what is stuck in between their teeth.
At the time of writing, there are very few televisions available in the world that are powerful enough to display true high definition movies at their highest available quality, but but this is changing now and the prices of HDTV's are falling quickly. Look out for another
guide from Absolute PlayStation that explains high definition televisions, as the last thing you want to do is buy the wrong type !
Anyway, what about the video games ?
The PlayStation 3 console is much more powerful that the PlayStation 2 and most of that extra power will be used to create games that look much better. All of this extra detail that can now be put into games means that we need much more space on the game disks to store them.
The CD disks on the PlayStation 1 allowed about 700 MB of information to be stored.
The DVD disks on the PlayStation 2 allowed about 4,800 MB of information to be stored on them.
The Blu Ray disks on the PlayStation 3 allow about 51,000 MB, but disks of up to 200,000 MB are in development.
Don’t worry what an ‘MB’ is, you can easily see from the numbers that the Blue Ray disc can store a great deal more information on it than the other two just by comparing the numbers.
There is so much space on these new disks that the Japanese, American and European versions of each game can easily be fit on one disk, meaning that at last we should see PS3 games released at the same time all around the world.
Because Blu Ray disks hold so much information, they have been designed to work very quickly. This has the advantage that the loading times for games will be much faster than if Sony had used a DVD drive instead.
Combine this huge amount of storage with the very fast hard disk drive built into every PS3 and suddenly you can have a way to feed the console with a huge amount of detail very quickly, allowing game makers to produce games that are limited only by their imagination.
Each game disk can now hold more information than the whole hard drive on the original Xbox360.
Put simply, games on the PlayStation 3 could now provide as much as five times the level of detail as those on the Xbox 360. To put this into perspective, PS3 games like Killzone 2 have levels more than 2GB (2000 MB) in size each.
