Guide to Blazing Angels on the PlayStation 3
World War II, aka "the big one", has been a constant source for game developers to set video games. Mostly, however, they fall into the category of first-person shooters or real-time strategy games. Ubisoft, however, decided to go in a slightly different direction to give us Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII- a slightly arcade-like aerial combat game originally released on the XBox 360 and now on the PS3 with some additions.
Players are set in the role of a US flyboy sent over to the UK to help fend off the Germans and other enemy forces in the various battles. Through the early missions you will meet with your wingmen, each with their own special little ability to help you get through. Tom is able to draw fire away from you, giving a bit more time to meet the objective. Frank is the hunter of the group- when available you can sic him on a selected target along with other enemies in its formation. Finally, Joe is the squadron mechanic- if you get too banged up a call to him will trigger a small button sequence to hit which, if timed correctly, will completely repair your aircraft.
The missions take place throughout WWII from Dunkirk to Pearl Harbour and onward, each with several objectives to be met. These also vary from shooting down bombers to recon (taking pictures of targets) and bombing runs. You get to pilot up to 46 different planes , each with their own pros and cons. Most are unlocked as you complete each mission and can be used to replay a stage, in an arcade mode, an Ace Duel (you vs. one other plane of the same type) and online against other players in 13 different types of battle.
One other item worth mentioning is this is one of the first games to take full advantage of the PlayStation 3's SixAxis controller. Players have the choice of flying using the analog sticks or you can steer the plane simply by tilting the controller.
The time I have spent with the game so far has been (in my opinion) well spent- I'll have the review up soon but for now, it's time to go back into the air and shoot me down some Luftwaffe!
