Bioshock 2 is a Sony PlayStation 3 Action Shooter game, written by 2k Marin.

Guide to Bioshock 2 on the PlayStation 3

BioShock 2 takes on a similar path as many other sequels in the industry, but there is a lot more weighing on this title's shoulders, something of which gamers who enjoyed the original release are well aware of. And with that familiarity comes a curse. Although the franchise made a statement when the first game came out, it seems quite unlikely that BioShock 2 will produce that same shock factor as it did the first time out. But the folks at 2K Marin are smart enough to realize that merely bringing back the same elements, regardless of how much commercial success it delivered, isn't just going to reap the same results this time out. If you will notice the elements in BioShock 2, it has made a huge leap from its predecessor for a stronger take on the first title off the franchise.

The bigger question in BioShock 2 is not whether any refinements or changes are done to the gameplay. It is more about whether these refinements are enough to convince buyers to grab a copy. One thing that set it apart from other sequels is that BioShock 2 did not focus solely on delivering a varied gameplay, it focused on the storyline in the hopes of facilitating a more playable game that is easy for gamers to digest. A lot of the strengths of the original remain evident on this one, along with the sense of awe and mystery it leaves to the gamers, although not as profound as the first title, nonetheless the game still has it.

BioShock 2 takes you 10 years following the events of the original wherein Jack is out of the story. Hence, you get to experience this game via the perspective of a totally different character, a Big Daddy in search of a Little Sister. Despite the fact that Rapture has already somewhat lost its charm and mystery, being already quite familiar to gamers now, one of the advantages for this game's story is that it has been tightly wound to make it easily digestible. In addition, BioShock 2 still packs that essence of panic and chaos, knowing that it is filled with lunatics that you will encounter all throughout this ravaged underwater world of Rapture.

The storyline in BioShock 2 looks to delve further into who you are as a character and what you need to do. When tied with the gameplay, this approach at the story helps to achieve more focus and therefore propel the game in a more fluid manner. Unlike the first game wherein you are the outsider looking in, you immerse yourself into the role of the overprotective parent looking after your pair. Instead of trying to save the Little Sisters to gather more genetic materials, you can also opt to adopt them in BioShock 2, thus it is your responsibility to protect them until it is time to turn on the sisters at the last minute. The level of interaction you can share with them further complicates the decision you would have to make down the line.

The progression structure has remained intact for BioShock 2 such that you will move from one stage to another as you complete tasks along the way before you can reach another area. This system flows naturally such that before you know it, you have reached the story's climax. The narrative is one of the strongest suit for the franchise, which also applies for BioShock 2. Furthermore, the game forces you to make tough decisions, such as the ones that entail the difference between life and death. For whatever decisions you make during the campaign, you will ultimately face the consequences.

The basic gameplay format in BioShock 2 is just as entertaining as the first, despite interwoven twists into the plot. It is characterized by variety such that gameplay never reaches the point of tedium, which is very likely with sequels that pick up on the same format as the original. There is enough mix of play mechanics to toy with, producing variant game moods, and lots of exploration to do with the massive world of Rapture. And speaking of the game world, exploring Rapture will eat up most of your playing time in BioShock 2. The game world is truly quite a visual spectacle although many critics would like to point that it is not as impressive as the world they saw for the first time in 2007 when the original game launched. But the level of detail does a great job of transporting the gamer into this mystery-laden world, with water dripping down from the ceiling and across the walls, blurred vision, and you being placed in often precarious situations.

Although the plasmids have been overhauled in BioShock 2, they still play an integral role during gameplay. Hence, you can use this combination of special powers and weapons to combat freakish-looking enemies as you attempt to enter into the deepest crevices of Rapture. One distinct change that was employed with the combat mechanic in BioShock 2, and one that will make the gamer's life more convenient during intense combat sequences, is the ability to use your firearms and plasmids simultaneously (rather than switching them up). A new dedicated melee attack button has also been incorporated into gameplay, thus enabling you to execute some other commands such as cycling through your other weapons in the arsenal. Slight adjustments such as these can do a lot to improve on the overall playing experience.

You can also upgrade your plasmids in BioShock 2, which enables you to spew more stingers that can make a living bomb out of your enemies. But it is not just with the upgrading of plasmids that has been enhanced, the entire upgrade system has been much improved. You can now upgrade all your weapons in more significant ways through a double upgrade tier. First off, upgrading your weapons in BioShock 2 increase their effectiveness during combat. And second, you can unlock a special function for that weapon to produce more damage than imaginable. It is an undeniable change from the original and one that will certainly add more crunch to the already intense level of action.

The number of tweaks and improvements done in the gameplay for BioShock 2 is another central focus in the game. Instead of the pipe hacking mini-game that was featured in its predecessor, this time out you can get real-time variations that will witness you take over security cameras, turrets, and flying robots for a more fluid display of action without being monotonous. The research camera has also been revised such that it works like a video recorder such that you can fight enemies normally while you are recording the action at the same time.

Interestingly enough, BioShock 2 incorporates a multiplayer component, which might appear odd given that it favors player-versus-player combat. Not sure if this contributes anything to add value to the gameplay or if it will even convince gamers to make a purchase, but it has the makings of producing an addicting online play though. It has a host of unlockables and level-based perks to reward gamers for continuous playing, while a number of new weapons have been added into the multiplayer game of BioShock 2.

BioShock 2 has succeeded in making up for the shortcomings of its predecessor but comparison is inevitable. 2K Marin nonetheless did an awesome job with the gameplay formula such that it did not rely too much on the old gameplay mechanic to get a surefire ticket to commercial success, such that it was bold enough to motivate and the merit of it was evident in the quality of playing experience.
