Guide to Bionic Commando on the PlayStation 3

Bionic Commando is a 3D sequel for the PlayStation 3 of the classic 2D title released by Capcom twenty years back. With this new version of Bionic Commando, gamers will take on a modern approach to this familiar franchise as a few of its major elements have been revised to suit the new design. But of course, you can expect the most striking factors to be retained such that it features the same basic elements that have endeared fans when Bionic Commando was initially released back in 1988.

Gamers of Bionic Commando will get to control the dreadlocked soldier, who is equipped with a mechanical arm, better known as the “bionic arm”. His name has been officially changed by Capcom into Nathan, whose biologically-enhanced arm will serve as an effective tool for use in this game. Take note though that the revised sequel of Bionic Commando is different from the HD version of the title that is remade for the PSN and XBL, entitled Bionic Commando Rearmed, for this one is a simple reinvention of the same long-standing series.

In the first Bionic Commando, Nathan (then known as Spencer) was able to defeat the Imperials while serving the government. However, it turns out that he was betrayed by the very same group of people he worked for. Ten years since the events of the original game, Nathan was imprisoned for crimes he did not commit and is set to be executed. However, during the day scheduled for his execution, Ascension City was blown off by a group of terrorists who has invaded the city. This explosion wiped out most of the military base, making them incapable of defending the city against these terrorists. But since this recent turnout of events have managed to save Nathan's life, he is well aware that he is the only one remaining that is capable of stopping further plans by the terrorist group.

Bionic Commando is in the third person perspective, which makes it different from the array of FPS titles out there in the market. Since the franchise created its own distinction for its tendency to become unforgivingly difficult, there is a tutorial stage that you can embark on at the start of the game. This tutorial stage for Bionic Commando will enable gamers to learn the most basic ability that you can use in this game, which is arm swinging. You must complete a set of tasks in the tutorials that will teach you the necessary skills you need for the game. Aside from arm swinging, most of the levels will consist of shooting or performing other cool tricks on Nathan's arsenal against your enemies.

The transition from a 2D game into a 3D format for Bionic Commando has opened up more opportunities in terms of gameplay and progression. In fact, it has managed to redefine 3D action with several ways to explore the various levels and areas in the game, whether it be on land, air, or navigating the city's skyscrapers. Environments are rendered in vertical and horizontal formats, such that gamers can maximize these different dimensions available in Bionic Commando. Although the game levels have been designed such that you can use your arm swinging ability to navigate these levels, expect them to become more difficult as you progress further into the game.

To keep with the level of difficulty in Bionic Commando, Nathan does have access to several weapons and tools in the game. Nathan's most useful tool comes in the form of his bionic arm, which can navigate through various levels with immense speed and strength. The design of the bionic arm is so powerful as it has managed to maximize the next-gen physics employed in its development. Aside from attaching to various platforms and swinging with it, you can also enable it to perform realistic tasks. For instance, you can use the bionic arm to grab an object, then use it to whip against enemies to send them flying into the air.

You can also use the bionic arm to destroy environmental features in Bionic Commando. There is so much variety with the things you can do using Nathan's bionic arm, which makes it almost identical to the functions of a real arm. There really isn't much of a limitation when you control Nathan, such as the Spiderman-like move that allow him to take down enemies even while hanging upside down. Indeed, the power of the bionic arm becomes highly evident with hand combat in Bionic Commando.

Aside from Nathan's bionic arm, Capcom also promise that there are several other useful weapons that are available in his arsenal for Bionic Commando. As of now, those weapons haven't been specified yet though. You can expect these weapons to be similar to the standard rapid-fire types of weapons and explosives.

In terms of game progression, gamers to Bionic Commando must complete different game stages. Each of these stages will have a predetermined number of routes that you must take in order to fulfill your missions and progress into your next set of objectives.

One of the highlights in Bionic Commando is the online feature that enable gamers to share this exciting combat experience with friends and fellow gamers. On all versions of Bionic Commando, including the PS3, a maximum of 10 players can play together online. You will play as an FSA soldier during online multiplayer and you must choose a color for your armor. When you choose to play online, you can have access to various features such as leaderboards and online stats to see how well you perform against other Bionic Commando gamers.

Knowing that Capcom is delivering Bionic Commando to the PS3, then it is no doubt that this title is looking visually impressive. Indeed, it has managed to maximize the capacity of the next-gen hardware, especially in terms of the physics involved in combat using the bionic arm. The lighting effects used was able to highlight the magnificence of the details in the environment such that it seems so realistic. Plus, the character details are impressive as well, probably the best visual touch known to the PS3.

Bionic Commando is looking to do justice to the hit classic franchise released several years back. With the power of the PlayStation 3, it was able to provide its modern reinvention that enable gamers of today to savor the gaming tradition of this old franchise.
