Alpha Protocol is a Sony PlayStation 3 Strategy RPG game, written by Obsidian Entertainment.

Guide to Alpha Protocol on the PlayStation 3

Alpha Protocol is a unique franchise from Obsidian games that offers a new twist into how RPGs are supposed to be. While most role playing games in the market would rather focus on narrative and dialogue, this high-tech super spy story delivered by the Southern California - based developers are going to add a lot more into the mix. So expect Alpha Protocol to inject looting, potent character progression, and a lot of freedom as you go further along into gameplay.

Upon the first revelation of Alpha Protocol into the public, critics were not quite warming up to the idea of combining a spy action adventure with a role playing mechanic. But the initial build of Alpha Protocol that was shown, it seems as though this novel concept might just spell the next big thing in gaming. There's plenty of things to do around and it provides enough leeway such that this game offers a high replay value. The game is also uniquely positioned in that very rarely do you find titles that combine elements of science fiction and fantasy in a modern day setting.

Before delving deeper into gameplay, let's first focus attention on one aspect of Alpha Protocol that Obsidian did a magnificent job on – the story. Gamers will get to don a tech outfit equipped with lots of essential gadgets and weaponry as Michael Thornton. He is a Super Spy with lots of things to take care of, but you need to take care of your actions every step of the way as it (thankfully) creates its own impact on the game, whether in short or long term. Another pleasant aspect about the story for Alpha Protocol is that it does not impose morality choices for you. These are all made possible by the theme that is evident in the game, producing a smooth and naturalistic flow of narrative.

But if you want to personalize Michael Thornton, you can certainly do so. Physically, you have as much options as you can probably think of to alter his physical features. But then again, it all works on the surface level - for Alpha Protocol it weighs more heavily on your in-game interactions. And going back to the game, it is pleasing to notice that Alpha Protocol adapts to your own playing style, instead of the other way around. Therefore, the stoyline is open-ended and there are several potential endings according to the decisions you made while playing the game.

The distinction that Alpha Protocol has created as an RPG for the PS3 is that you are not restricted to the typical gameplay wherein you had to wander around your hub locations, making forced dialogues with different game personalities. Instead, you will only engage in such conversations during missions, which enable you to put the pieces together forging your mission ahead. Basically, those are done to give you an idea on where you are supposed to be headed next in Alpha Protocol. It is truly satisfying for gamers to be able to take liberty in doing as they please, not because the game has boxed you into a corner, leaving you with no other choice to make. Eventually, you will feel more worthy of the rewards waiting for you along the line.

As an RPG, Alpha Protocol showcases an impressive combat system that offers several unique approaches. In addition to typical combat mechanics, you can also perform both lethal and non-lethal takedowns. Obdisian Games even insists that you could possibly complete this game without necessarily killing your enemies. But given that Michael Thornton is a fierce spy with combat orientation, it would certainly come in handy during combat confrontations. Alpha Protocol's level up system also has quite a bit of semblance with that of Mass Effect but there's more depth to it in the game.

You will have access to the dossier in Alpha Protocol, which serves as your main access point and catalogue of all information that will enable you to organize your factions and all characters you'd meet along the way. Your character will also gain perks and skill points, which you can allocate to gain passive or active abilities. Some of the notable Perks in Alpha Protocol is the Shadows Perk, which enables you to reduce enemy sight range by as much as 10 percent. Then, there's the Low Places Perk that offers you 10 percent discount when you purchase ill-gotten goods. You will also get special spy skills in this game, with the most interesting of them being Spy's Luck. This will enable you to prevent setting off an alarm in any case your spy character messed up during the course of the game.

The addition of the loot system also further establishes Alpha Protocol's distinction against other RPGs. You can take advantage of the loot system on basically all aspect of gameplay, such as armor, weapons, gadget modifications, ability to choose your missions, among others. Its features like this that enable hardcore role-playing gamers to enjoy Alpha Protocol without necessarily engaging in intense combat every step of the way. And for those who need some diversions at mid-point, there are hacking mini games that you can participate in that enable you to uncover new areas. All you need to do is study the line diagrams to figure out how you can get the lines to match up.

The developers of Alpha Protocol also promise to bring boss battles, which will pit you up against difficult bosses. One of them would involve a scene against a female character named Sis who is determined to kill you. But if you spare her life, you will later on find out that you can get an award for not killing her. In fact, you can even get a discount with all of her factions. For different choices you make, you will also have corresponding results for those actions.

Despite the packing power of Alpha Protocol's gameplay, the same can sadly not be said about its visual design. It is hard to decipher which is lacking, the technology or the art style. Nonetheless, the characters do not stand out as much as they're supposed to, especially with an intense RPG action as Alpha Protocol. But when it ships onto the PlayStation 3, RPG gamers will surely welcome this new option that makes an excellent case for your choice of title to play during your spare time.
