Afro Samurai is a Sony PlayStation 3 Fighting Action game, written by Namco Bandai Games.

Guide to Afro Samurai on the PlayStation 3

Afro Samurai is an exciting new game that arrives on the PS3 that is nothing different from your regular action game and yet truly satisfying. The game was a spin-off from the highly successful manga and anime series that originated in Japan. Several developers and publishers saw its potential to be exactly the kind of concept that gamers would love to spend a few hours on their console playing each single day. And that was basically how the franchise for Afro Samurai was born and although this contains some violence in it, its the kind that fans from all over the world could appreciate.

In a gaming scene that has been dominated from some of the giant titles in the genre such as Ninja Gaiden, Naruto, or Devil May Cry, Afro Samurai has got some fresh new offerings that will set it apart from other games of the same genre. And it has a very compelling story to boot too, that is closely tied up to the gameplay experience.

Speaking of story, Afro Samurai is one that is fueled by revenge. Afro, the main character in this game, looked up to his father while growing up. For a little background, there are two main headbands featured in Afro Samurai: Number One and Number Two. Those with Number One headband possess the power of a god, which is something that everybody wants. So in order to possess that Number One headband yourself, you must challenge and defeat whoever has it. Afro's father was one of those who possessed the Number One headband, which triggered Justice to challenge his father. At this time, Justice was only Number Two so he was hungry to get that Number One headband, which he successfully did.

After this devastating loss, Afro grew up and acquired whatever skills he needed in order to avenge the death of his father. That will basically spell out the story in Afro Samurai. But Afro did not even have the Number Two headband to begin with, until he eventually worked his way to get it and pursuing to avenge his father's nemesis.

So that brings us into the gameplay proper for Afro Samurai, which is definitely one of the highlights of this action game. Afro Samurai is a melee-focused action game that offers a lot of swordplay and hardcore action that suits well both the hardcore and novice gamer. What the developers wanted to make out of Afro Samurai is to deliver a game that was challenging but accessible to fans. Therefore, you can't expect to hold the control and play through hour after another until you reach the point of wanting to give up trying.

There are two basic types of difficulty modes in Afro Samurai: Number One headband difficulty and Number Two headband difficulty. Between the two, Number One is the harder one to complete because enemies during this mode are smarter and more powerful. And while it is difficult, it still is the kind of game that even non-expert gamers can complete. As for Afro Samurai's Number Two headband difficulty, it is all about developing your skills and acquiring new ones that will prepare you for your upcoming battles once you have progressed in this game. Therefore, it is a learning stage where you can bank on improving your fighting style to be able to beat the Number One yourself.

On now to the specifics, Afro Samurai is packed with great moves that is really what this game is about. The ability to land a hit or deflect an enemy attack lies in timing. Hence, Focus Mode is an essential part of Afro Samurai's gameplay. Once you activate this Focus mode, you also attain Focus time during combat that renders your enemy's attack in slow motion. You will notice that at this rate of speed, it is much easier to block their attack or launch your own counter moves.

There are also two highly dynamic and powerful features in the gameplay of Afro Samurai: the Father's Legacy combos and Body Part Poker. Father's Legacy combos basically feature moves or fighting styles that Afro has learned from his father as his apprentice. In order to use these combos, you must find the crows in each level. Once you have collected at least five crows, then you'd be able to unlock the Father's Legacy combos in Afro Samurai.

Body Part Poker is where you can utilize the dynamic cutting system that is unique only to Afro Samurai. Basically, this is one of the gory and violent aspect of the game which is enjoyable, no matter how odd it seems. It enables you to aim on which part of an enemy's body you can slice on. This feature in Afro Samurai is also tied up to the Focus system, which is crucial in performing those kills. Once you see the tiny Ninja Ninja icon, then that is when you are allowed to play the Body Part Poker.

To begin with, Afro is equipped with as much as 120 moves that he has learned while growing up. The moves in his arsenal are also quite varied, which includes kicks, swordplay, launching enemies into the air, jumping on enemies, grabbing or pouncing on them. Indeed, your character's abilities seem limitless in Afro Samurai and yet you can unlock more of them and level up.

Afro Samurai features a level and stat system, which enables you to unlock more moves to add to your arsenal. In terms of leveling up, it can be done in both ways: via experience points and bonus points. Whenever you perform attacks and successfully kill your enemies, you will earn experience points for that. Bonus points come in the form of performing 'extra' moves such as cutting off their heads or other parts of the body. By acquiring more of those experience and bonus points, then that's basically how you'd eventually unlock more combos in Afro Samurai.

If you've seen the TV series version of Afro Samurai, then you might have already been familiar to the enemies there are in this game. To say the least, there is a wide variety of them and their skills. However, the ronin is one of your biggest and most prevalent nemesis in Afro Samurai, as much as they were in the original series. Among your enemies include android ninjas, samurais, female assassins, Pole Cats, and giant characters.

But it's a totally different tale with the boss battles in Afro Samurai. One of your biggest challenge in this game is to defeat Justice, which is responsible for your father's death. Defeating him in your boss battle would be the ultimate form of vengeance for your father. Another boss battle will feature the Sword Master, but it is basically the type of battle that will teach you the skills you need to do well later on in the game.

When it comes to multiplayer, Afro Samurai strictly offers a single-player story mode that is dedicate to unraveling whether Afro's initial objective for revenge is fulfilled or not. So, don't expect to have co-op or multiplayer options on this one.

Aside from its compelling visual style and cel-shaded graphics, Afro Samurai also championed as a game in terms of the vast environments to explore. There is a wide range of them including mountainous scenes, desert, snow areas, town or forest areas. All these environments get their influence from the anime series itself that are being developed into various game levels.

In the audio department, on the other hand, knowing that Samuel L. Jackson renders his talent in the voice-over acting, then you can be assured that it is quality voice work. The soundtrack used for Afro Samurai consist mostly of hip hop tunes that really create an upbeat type of atmosphere. Some of the tracks though were specifically created for the game while others were taken out of the anime series. Indeed, a nice variety in there!

Afro Samurai is a refreshing addition into the PS3 lineup and is filled with unrelenting action that you'd find it hard to put down that controller.
