Guide to 007 Legends on the PlayStation 3
The latest James Bond film, Skyfall, is about to be released and while no video game version is developed for this particular film, there is one due for release that aims to commemorate the famous franchise. The James Bond brand has been around for 50 years and in celebration of that, Activision is developing a brand new game for the gaming pleasure of its die-hard fans. The game is dubbed 007 Legends and will release simultaneously with Skyfall on October 15, which promises to be an action packed day for filmgoers and gaming fanatics alike.
Daniel Craig will be reprising his role as James Bond for Skyfall and he will also be back for the video game version this time out. Since this is a special anniversary release of the video game franchise, the story for 007 Legends will incorporate various elements of stories from past games but combined them into a single story arc. Hence, it is the ultimate game to play for any die-hard Bond fan out there! The disk is also said to contain a total of 5 movie narratives that will be taking your favorite spy into a number of different locations from around the globe.
However, if these locations are not enough for you to explore, the developers at Activision has confirmed that a free DLC pack will be available for grab for those who purchase the game upon its release date. The DLC pack will contain another mission that will feature a set similar to that of the franchise's latest film, Skyfall. There are several rumors swirling around that this mission will also set to bring the game into a finale, although the development team and publishers Activision could not confirm this news as of the moment.
The initial build for 007 Legends was showcased during the E3 2012 held way back in June. And in this build, fans and video game industry experts alike were able to get a glimpse of Bond's foe for this particular game – Jaws. If you could remember, he is also the same foe that the famous detective went up against in the film Moonraker. James Bond will once again rely on his trademark watch to determine if there are any enemies nearby, then he will shoot a dart pen that contains tranquilizer towards his enemies to incapacitate them. This allows James Bond to execute a stealth manuever even when there are guards on post.
007 Legends will also give players the ability to customize their approach during the gameplay experience. You can take advantage of the experience points you have gathered along the way to personalize Bond attack depending on which skills or abilities you wish to acquire for the detective hero. Hence, this enables the hero to make it past countless of enemies or get to his goal while remaining undetected. Several critics are already pointing out that this has got to be the most personalized experience available to any James Bond game yet due to the extent of customization available to fans.
No hands-on preview was available for PS3's 007 Legends, hence it is difficult to assess how the handling works for this game. But judging from the alpha build shown for the game, it has the makings of a quality modern shooter. The frame rate showed tremendous stability and there is none of those annoying texture pop-in nor clipping issues observed. The only downside for the game is that once Bond was detected by an enemy, all of the other enemies are detected of his presence, making the battle a bit lopsided. It therefore goes without saying that AI should be improved if this game were to become more realistic, especially for one that includes stealth mechanics as part of gameplay.
In terms of graphics, 007 Legends for the PS3 isn't one to blow you away. There is nothing here that would set new standards and the level design does not seem to challenge current gen consoles. But then again, the developers of this game focused more on wrapping up a good story for the famous spy.
It is still a couple more months until the release of 007 Legends on the PS3. Given the legacy of the franchise, it is difficult for fans to not get excited about its release. Hopefully, this brand new game will live up to that legacy and make it all worth the wait for fans.
